I like that... sounds like they're preparing to change the focus of the department if you ask me...

President Zuma announced several changes to current government departments, the creation of new structures within the presidency.

A national planning commission (NPC) will be set up, which will be based in the presidency, the NPC will be responsible for strategic planning to which all spheres of government will adhere.

There will also be a monitoring and evaluation and administration department in the presidency.

The department of mineral and energy will be split into two departments, as will be the department of education.

The department of housing will be called department of human settlement. The following appointments were announced:
Minister of defence: Lililwe Sisulu

Minister of finance: Pravin Gordon

Deputy president: Kgalema Motlanthe

Minister of higher education and training - Blade Nzimande

Minister of home affairs - Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma

Minister of human settlement - Tokyo Sexwale

More details to follow.

Tokyo Sexwale can probably afford to buy a few 1000 houses for people.

Now i wish to get a list of the DG, not sure if they are still appointed by by the President

Minister of defence: Lililwe Sisulu [ Why did they move her from intelligence in the first place ]

Minister of finance: Pravin Gordon [ I think it was a good choice - he did well at SARS ]

Deputy president: Kgalema Motlanthe [ I still need to know what happened to his business interest ]

Minister of higher education and training - Blade Nzimande [ i believe he is a workaholic and taking it from what he has being saying since he became the secretary general of SACP, I think he has an academic doctorate ]

Minister of home affairs - Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma [ I think she will make some effective changes and with her experience in gauvament things can only get better if they dont change the DG]

Minister of human settlement - Tokyo Sexwale [I just wonder who will win those tenders to build houses ]

See my replies in red.

Red more about Kgalema and the land Bank loan with pamodzi (http://sarocks.co.za/2008/09/23/who-is-kgalema-motlanthe/)

With regards to Blade - I still think he will make a difference on Higher education, as secretary general of SACP he didn't report to anyone.

Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma as minister of health she sucked including the Sarafina fiasco, but she made head ways as minister of foreign affairs.

How the hell can a former MK soldier be head of Communications? He'll have no idea whatsoever.

And the Commies love being Head of Education. Then they can brainwash the masses into voting for them time and time again.

I wonder if the script got jumbled. It's almost as if the names were drawn out of a hat and matched to arbitrary portfolios.

If you think of the skills and expertise of Tokyo Sexwale and Barbara Hogan, it seems just a little short-sighted to use them for building houses and sorting out Eskom. Roy Padayachie is now going to manage civil servants. Paul Mashatile, who ran the finances of Gauteng for years, is now going to look after ballet. Kortbroek is going to look after tourists only, when he was really only good at environmental affairs. And finally, Pieter Mulder has revealed his true colours and joined the dark side, albeit in Agriculture - isn't that just a little patronising? The only really good fit I can see is Naledi Pandor and Derek Hanekom in Science and Technology.

Pravin Gordhan is not bad for Finance, but what company would move the guy who's been really successful in maximising revenue into managing spending? As for appointing Trevor Manuel as Big Brother (OK, Little Brother, since JZ is Big Brother), it's also probably fine, but are we sure we're ready for 1984-style government? All that's really making international news is that the Minister of Finance has changed. However, one commentator is already describing Manuel's role as equivalent to "Prime Minister", which can't be all bad.

And what's wrong with Military Communications and Communist Education and Training?

"Military communications is a field of military activities, tactics and equipment dealing with communications. First of all, military communications are battlefield (combat) communications, including intercommunication with a higher command or country's government."

"Communist propaganda is defined as a scientifically-based system of the dissemination of the communist (Marxist-Leninist) ideology with the purpose of education, training and organizing of the masses."

(Quotations from Wikipedia)

This whole issue of Minister of Communications is one thing, he'll either do well or screw it up just as badly as Ivy.....

Whats worrying me more though it Blade having anything to do with Tertiary education. Its already shakey at best, and academics need to exist in an environment where they can be outspoken about things and not worry about unneccesary censure etcetc....

Something that is VERY important for me is that Tertiary education is a priviledge, not a right, and I have a feeling that Blade will make it almost a right and they'll have to drop standards even further to make sure they meet the quote of number of passed students given that the level of intelligence of the average student will drop even further.

Anyone up for starting a private university with me? :p

actually tertiary education should be a right first and foremost. in that if you have the ability you are able to access it.

that being said, it does not mean that standards should drop. the two are mutually exclusive.

Anyone up for starting a private university with me? :p

Universities are established by statute, but are not run by the State like schools. Each is run by an independent Council, and the only real co-ordination between them is through Higher Education South Africa, a non-government body consisiting of all the principals / vice chancellors.

I think Comrade Blade is going to find that he's not really up to taking on the might of the universities. Universities have survived all kinds of governments all over the world for a thousand years or more. By comparison, communism was a brief fashion in the last century that's now past.

'Mrs Fix-it' ready for task
10/05/2009 17:50

Pretoria - Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma will fit "like a hand in a glove" into her new portfolio as Home Affairs Minister, her spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said on Sunday.

Mamoepa was reacting to President Jacob Zuma's new Cabinet announcement that shifted Dlamini-Zuma from the Foreign Affairs Ministry to Home Affairs.

"She [Dlamini-Zuma] is perceived as Mrs Fix-it of government.

"First she was sent to health to sort out the two major battles involving the tobacco and pharmaceutical industries," he said. Today South Africa is punching way above its weight.

"Home Affairs needs fixing and now they need Mrs Fix-it again.

"As far as the minister [Dlamini-Zuma] is concerned, she has been part of Home Affairs before and she will fit in like hand in glove," Mamoepa said.

President Zuma appointed Maite Nkoana-Mashabane as the new Minister of International Relations and Co-operation, the ministry's new name.

I think its an interesting decision. He should come in handy in his position in repairing the relationship between goverment and the Agriculture sector. And knowing him, he wont kiss the bums of the ANC, so the farmers interests will be well looked after.

Will have to keep an eye on that one.

Ok I probably misrepresented what I meant...

Tertiary education should be available to all, no question... but you have to be capable... just because you're previously disadvantaged does not mean you should gain entry and pass regardless.. if you're stupid you're stupid and must go away....

As for Universities being run by an independent Council... I think you'll find a large number of upper echelon university "employees" are government lackeys, so what Blade wants, Blade will get.

i have heard that HIV/AIDS policy was something Mbeki controlled. She apparently opposed Mbeki on his stance hence why she was moved out and the more subservient Manto put in her place. But I would not be able to prove what I have heard.
