Freedom Front Plus leader Pieter Mulder said on Sunday President Jacob Zuma had "reached out to Afrikaners" by appointing him as Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

"President Jacob Zuma has in the recent past on various occasions reached out to the Afrikaner and other minorities," Mulder said after his appointment.

"President Zuma has now followed it up after the election by offering a deputy minister’s position to the FF Plus in continuation of his reaching out to the Afrikaner." Mulder said he had broadly engaged with Afrikaner cultural and Agricultural organisations about the issue and asked their advice about the offer.

"Their overwhelming and unanimous reaction was that the hand of cooperation which is being extended to us should not summarily be slapped away but should be seen as an opportunity," he said.

The FF Plus would make use of the opportunity by raising issues such as Afrikaans universities and education, name changes, affirmative action and poverty, self-determination, the status of the Afrikaner enclave Orania, and general minority rights.

The FF Plus saw the acceptance of the offer as a political experiment which held specific advantages for South Africa, Mulder said.

"For our supporters and for the agricultural community. The decision will however, from time to time, have to be re-evaluated on the hand of certain guidelines in order to ensure that the objectives of this are still being attained."

Mulder dismissed the idea of a coalition between his party and the ANC.

"There is no question about a coalition or any other similar agreements between the ANC and the FF Plus," he said.

"In talks about the issue, President Zuma agreed that the FF Plus retains its autonomy as a political party, as well as its critical role as opposition party in full."

Asked about Mulder’s appointment, Zuma said the ANC’s approach was to "cooperate with other political parties".

"Pieter Mulder is a South African who belongs to a particular political party.

"The approach of the ANC is how to cooperate with other political parties. I think this is good for the country," Zuma said.

However, in a statement later, FF Plus youth leader Cornelius Jansen van Rensburg said Mulder had accepted the appointment without approval from the party.

"FF Plus members and the party’s federal council only became aware of this decision during President Zuma’s announcement on Sunday afternoon."

The FF Plus youth believed this was unacceptable and in contradiction to the party’s election manifesto.

"Dr Mulder cannot serve as both party leader and deputy minister in President Zuma’s Cabinet.

"Furthermore, the FF Plus will not enter a coalition with the ANC."

The matter would be discussed at the party’s federal council meeting on May 23, Jansen van Rensburg said.

This is going to be one heated council meeting! If this is just a case of window dressing for Zuma Mulder should have rejected the offer.

Good gracious, and I thought BEE window dressing was bad!

But then again the FF+ and ANC have always had similar ideals: the narrow-minded objectives of a small group of individuals instead of the betterment of the entire population.

Mulder had accepted the appointment without approval from the party.

"Dr Mulder cannot serve as both party leader and deputy minister in President Zuma’s Cabinet.

Ouch, even his own party is opposed to this unholy union! :D

Sounds like he wants to be an Afrikaans version of old Juliass.... ;)

The only reason JZ is trying to be 'nice' to the Afrikaaner is because he knows that if (when) he screws up it is here from whence his butt kicking will come.

It seems that Zuma targets Afrikaners now. Madiba and Mbeki never said Afrikaners were part of this nation ("the only true white afrikaneers"). May be Zuma knows South Africa needs tha Afrikaneers communauty in order to keep the country afloat.

And may be it will help ANC to get the 2/3 majority in 2014, with massive supports from Afrikaners (as Sothos and Xhosas may switch to COPE).

Lyk my die "Boere" word alweer met 'n slap riem gevang (en nie 'n ingelse een nie)

Old dreams of --> 'n eie Volk in sy eie Land <-- Where there will only be WARE Afrikaners left in Southern Africa seem to die hard !

Hulle is besig om met 'n SWART Mamba te speel

I see that there is a definite agenda by the ANC and perhaps the remnants of the Broederbond ( according to the words I hear proceeding from the mouths of the Afrikaner "Academics" )
to demonize the role of not only the Wicked Colonising English , but also the ESSA ( Engels Sprekende Suid Afrikaaners ) who according
to Zzzoooommaaa and Dan Roodt ( strange bedfellows ) are NOT truly Africans / South Africans / Afrikaaners.

Truly a case of DIVIDE & RUIN

PASOP; dalk word die -- "drome" --> "Nagmerries"

"Bulala abatagati"

die VF+ stel die Afrikaners in die verleentheid, ek is nie trots om deel van "daai" cliche te wees nie.

Yip...

The FF+ the self appointed leaders of the Afrikaans community.

They act like everything they say is on behalf of the entire Afrikaans community. But only a small minority of the Afrikaans community voted FF+

In farming terminology there is a judas goat - working on the herd mentality the judas goat goes ahead and then the sheep or cattle will follow it - usually into the abatoir.

See this is why the country will never move forward, nobody can fathim that blacks and Afrikaans could actually come together. Maybe if this country had never had racist leaders we would all live in harmony.

Cannot believe the reaction to this.

I'm also shocked! I thought this through last night when I saw the list, and I have to say it seems like an inspired decision.

They did not stick him in some useless portfolio like Tourism for kortbroek. Zuma chose to have him in a key, IMO, portfolio like Agriculture, where there has been a LOT of friction between farmers, mainly Afrikaners, and goverment. And for me having Mulder there, COULD aid in better communication and understanding in negotiation and making sure everyone is happy with the sector.

Agreed. This is a very good move from JZ.

And this isn't the same as the Kortbroek situation. Kortbroek took his entire party over to the ANC. The FF+ are not joining the ANC in any way, shape or form.

Except the FF+ don't approve of Mulder's decision.

Nope, Cornilius Jansen Van Rensburg does not agree. Does he speak for the leadership of the FF+?

And it seems in the comments he submitted that he did not get a full understanding of what is going on. What is it with political parties youth guys running their mouths of at the first opportunity? :D
