Hello Guys.

I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts on mirror servers in South Africa - specifically on the iBurst network.

What servers/services would you like to see mirrored ?

My rough list:


Here's a biggie .... ANY CHANCE for a sourceforge mirror ? MAN that would be nice .......

Sounds like a good list, I actually cannot think of anything to add.

Just one thing - what is freshRPMs? I am quite happy with our existing RPM - IMO he's sufficiently fresh :D
 
Well, we do have mirrors of a lot of Linux stuff and apache on IS and Saix servers, altho they don't get updated as often as they should - they certainly aren't "fresh"

Tucows is also mirrored here.

I'd say you should rather petition for iBurst to ditch the 64kbps throttle on local when the cap is used up - or get them to indicate whether it's contended or not ?

If it's not contended, well, you can download distributions at 8kbps max, so it would take you about 24 hours to download a single CD of a distribution.
 
bb_matt, that isn't the problem - it's that those mirrors are throttled for iBurst (well all external) users.

Sheesh, that sucks !
Another reason not to get iBust then - sure, it's not thier fault, but that's not my problem.

Then again, a 3gig cap pretty much negates downloading 3 CD linux distributions or the like anyway. With ADSL, it's a lose-lose situation. You can hose your Int. bandwidth for the month and download as much local stuff as poss, or not.
Altho, you can open another 3gig account for R250 and use that to download local content from mirrors to your hearts content.

Aye curumba.

Thanx for the feedback guys ....

I'll see what can be discussed around cap counting for the mirror ... but I doubt there's a way around that ;-)

Just another crazy idea...that WBS will simply ignore altogether

Perhaps this would be an opening for WBS - if they aren't tied into an exclusive bandwidth contract with UUNET SA:

They could offer different bandwidth packages, like one that goes through IS as an alternative to UUNET/MCI, this would hopefully give those particular customers full speed access to ftp.is.co.za

mmm, that's an interesting one ic ... from my understanding of the system I'm sure that is possible ... one wonders how likely this one is though ...

I dont really know how this works but if iburst hosts mirrors and others (ie not iburst subscribers) are downloading from it would that not impact on the bandwidth available to me??

Which is IMO exactly why IS (and others) throttle external access (non-IS-subscribers/customers) to their ftp severs.

If I'm not mistaken, what Regardtv is suggesting here is that WBS should have a mirror cluster that is available to iBurst customers, allowing us iBursters to download at full speed. Perhaps even taking it further by only making the mirrors available to iBursters - i.e. no external access - that then becomes a good marketing ploy for WBS' iBurst.
 
if your local is uncapped, then yes, otherwise, having a mirror would be useless IMO
 
iburst need a cache server, that would be cool. but a fast and frequently updated one
