screwdriver to open seagate 1TB 7200.11

Hi all

Im struggling to source the special screwdriver to take the PC Board off my drive. The head of the screw is the same SHAPE on the previous generation drives(I got that screwdriver), but the 7200.11 and 7200.12 drives have a MUCH smaller size. I reckon its about 1.5mm accross compared to about 3mm accross for the previous generation drives.

Does anyone have one? Or perhaps point me in the right direction where I can buy one? Im in Cape Town.

Its cheaper if you buy the Torx bits set as you get all the different sizes and its cheaper than buy the full screwdriver,
 
The cellphone spares places Cellular Bitz, et al, have el cheapo torx screwdrivers at good prices.

Best place for electronics related tools would be Christensen Tools. I have never found them to not have what I'm looking for.

reviving the drive

I need a backup plan if swapping this PC board around doesnt work...

Has anyone had any lukc bring one of these dead 7200.11 drives back to life? I found a fix here http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=128807 but this is going to be risky and take up a lot of time.

Does anyone know of any other fix? Surely there must be something now, as this article was posted in Jan this year.

Changing the electronics IMHV is not going to help.The reason is that the corrupt firmware sits on the magnetic surface of the drive, if indeed that is your problem. The only reason swopping the board could work is when the fault is due to an electronic failure on the PC board itself. The method in your link is the only sure way to fix these drives if the firmware update method failed. Use it loose it. Good luck.

is it advisable to try and update the firmware while the drive is dead, I mean is this even possible?
 
Spinning but not detected... I got the BSY firmware error...

I gonna do this whole long winded process (see above post) but if I have a chance of getting it working if I flashthe firmware to the latest then its worth a try I think...

Problem is I need to get all this crap from some electronics store!!

Where are U situated?. The whole thing these guys are refering to are a RS232 TTL interface. That means the voltages in the interface are limited to 3v cmos or 5V TTL logic signals and not the standard 12V RS232 interface levels coming from most PC's. Mostly any RS232 interface have internal components using the required low voltage level logic and only in the final output stage convert them with a Max232 (or other) voltage converter chip (IC) to the 12V standard. Thus it is a easy thing if you get a DIY rs232 converter or an old motherboard with the voltage level converter chips on board. The new MB's unfortunately has everything integrated.

Reading your post again you must clarify.

If the drive is spinning then try to flash with the Seagate firmware update from the net first. If that fail to "fix" the drive then you have to write to the drive firmware as per your article via the drive factory RS232 TTL interface channel (as per the linked article)

You can get all the parts from any electronics supplier like Communica. I will check the DIY project kits first and see if they have an RS232 inteface converter. Else you are going to have to build your own electronic circuit.

Hobby/Job since I was a boy. I am a JHB man. There should be some good Electronic shops up there too. Talk to the older gents, they will know exacly what I am talking about (I hope). If you are really stuck I will see if I can help if need be!

Detected by what? The BIOS or Windows?

If it is detected by the BIOS you should be able to flash it.
If the BIOS cannot see it then tough luck and you have to go with another plan.
 
I went to the corner hardware store and got a set for like 30 bucks or something, when I was in the same situation. like prev. said, get a set.
 
bsy error = not seen by the BIOS, so tough luck for me

just got back form builders warehouse... got the Torx no.6 that I needed, finally!

Gonna swap the board tonight and see what happens. I have read some posts about people having luck with this... if not

Then time to go shopping for all those parts!

Please please help me, i got the "BSY error: it happens when your HDD enter on a halt state, or BuSY state. In this condition, your HDD will not be recognized by BIOS at POST moment." see http://www.msfn.org/board/solution-seagate-7200-11-hdds-t128807.html there's a list of stuff I need to get but honestly have no idea where to get this stuff..or actually how to use it. I'm in Pretoria. when i tell people @ electronic stores "im looking for a RS232 Shifter SMD or a FT232BM/BL adapter" they dont know what im talking about or what im getting at.

I really need somebody who knows whats cutting who can seriously help me out, or even direct me to place or a guy that can do this operation for me.
