Someone just got hooked up with a laptop card in the offices I'm at and I took it for a spin.

It's ok - definately not super speedy.

One scary thing is that apparently when your cap is up, it switches to GPRS (you can turn this off) and we all know how expensive that is.

General consensus amongst the IT guys in the offices I share is that it's good for email and presentations when on the road, but it's too expensive.

They are all hoping the prices will drop.

*cough telkom cough*

Prices drop? Geez, do you work with idiots? Or just people who always see the glass half full, even though they get ass raped daily? Or are they perhaps idiots? Wait... lemme guess... idiots...

:D

Tell them noone said so :P

Urban Legend time! :)

- You can merrily go past your cap, and will pay the same rate for 3G or GPRS @ R2/Mb.

- Actually, Vodacom would prefer you to exceed your cap on 3G and not GPRS, as you'll browse more and thus pay more. ;)

Seriously though, this is just not the case. The network makes no differentiation at all between 3G and GPRS. Rates, etc. are all the same.

If you're on 3G or GPRS is determined by 1) your SIM (is it provisioned for 3G), your device (is it 3G capable), your profile on the dashboard (does it include 3G) and the coverage of the area you're in.

DATA rates are the same regardless of carrier, out of bundle rates for either 3G or GPRS is R2 a meg.

Once your bundle is used up you should not switch to GPRS merely pay out of bundle rates.

The card will move to GPRS when there is little or no 3G coverage.

vodacom3g? correct?

/edit
Ok nevermind falling behind the forum today ;)

I stand corrected Vodacom3g !

I think possibly the IT guys were talking k@k to me and didn't check up on thier options.

noone - I don't think these guys are idiots - in fact I know they are not.

It's a product evaluation more than anything - these guys are on the road a lot, demo-ing online apps and currently vodacom have the best coverage + they can always jump to GPRS if there isn't 3G.

They tried iBurst prior to this and it just didn't work for them - the coverage area wasn't good enough.

They are aware that the cost is restrictive, but what other solutions do they have ?
The product they are demoing is fairly new, they can't always rely on the clients they go to having a working net connection, so the only option right now is the expensive 3G one.

I know from experience, going to a client to show them an online demo only to find thier net connection is down is horribly embarrassing.
Sure, there's always the chance that the vodacom 3g network gives problems, but the chances of that AND a companies network being offline are small enough for it to be a non-issue.

Prices have to go down eventually - there's no way this country can sustain it's shocking connection prices for much longer without starting to suffer due to loss of investment etc.

I am realistic enough to understand that they will never reach USA/UK/Asian price ranges, unless we miraculously end up with only 10% unemployment and a 80% educated population !

bb_matt -

Once the sales guys are connected to the 3G network, how do they connect back to the office? Via the internet, I assume? This might be a weak link in the connection, as you won't always know what's happening on the internet side. Your office could be updating MS patches, for example.

Reason for asking; we're developing a 'VPN' product for these kind of situations, where your road warriors will connect to a dedicated APN and you can then run a dedicated link back to your office.

Thus all the bandwidth is dedicated to demo-ing your app.

Can this work for you?

damn vodacom! it just keeps getting better! pinches myself to see if im dreaming. never had decent service like this before. you guys are the number #1 wireless network without a doubt, purely coz you listen to us and act. i suddenly feel worthwhile and not used like my previous wireless experiences.

vodacom3g - I'm not sure - I'll ask.

I rent a single office in a large building - 90% of the building is one company and that's where the IT guys are. I'm pretty damn sure that a VPN option would be something they would be interested in. They have several connectivity solutions, including an ADSL link to thier durban offices which they use to continuously serve data - obviously the cap is not an issue for this.

IOW, the IT manager is pro-active.

bb_matt, even though they might "know computers" a degree in microsoft word doesn't excuse them for being idiots.

Assuming vodacom, partly owned by telkom, would drop prices, is insane. I'm sure they're not into gay porn are they? Because they sure as hell like to take it up the butt...

Excuse me???
Where were you this last 6 months. Correct my maths if I am wrong, but Vodacom's MOST expensive data rates have dropped by in excess of 95.5% (from R45 / MB to R2 / MB) - if you want to reflect that in newspaper stats then this is a drop of 2250% (always tickles me how papers can have reductions in excess of 100% but there you go!!!)

If we compare cheapest data rates (old and new) then we arrive at a reduction of approx 94% (R10 / MB in bundle for MyMeg10 to R0.60 / MB in bundle for 3G1)

Even since introducing 3G out of bundle rtes have dropped fromR10 / MB to R2 / MB (80% drop in case you are having trouble with the maths) within 6 or so weeks.

These look like price reductions to me.

Once again a lack of knowledge seem to occur. Noone they just did drop their rates ? I asume you are using a massive amount of bandwidth just browsing this site to make such accurate statements regarding 3G and the cost involved. I am surprised at the negativity regarding any connetivity within SA as previously, ie. 2 months ago some of these options where never available to users in SA ?

Don't bring something down unless you have tried it yourself. 10 minutes in a shop sample is not significant testing to even make a real analysis of the possible usage of the service available from Vodacom. I am impressed with the service they provide and for one will not accept losely based and personal opinions regarding a service some of us use daily and have rarely found fault with ?

Noone, why don't you just go overseas and find a phat pipe like you want to. I have never seen a postive post from your desk about any service. You bitch about iBurst, Sentech, ADSL, 3G, if you hate this country so much and are so negative all the time then go find that phat pipe elsewhere.

And, I know you always want the last word, so I await your attack. Vodacom have done ALOT more than any other service, including Hellkom and especially WBS. So perhaps for once in your life you could acknowledge something positive.

boy, you probably know nothing so just shut the hell up before I have to do something to make you shut it

noone - you sound like the school bully. If someone points out your flawed maths (which you probably failed at school), you revert to threats.

And this anal fixation is worrysome. When you leave on your green card, try LA.

You'll find enough people there who could indulge your fantasies as well as enough shrinks to help you with this and your anger management.

It's not about flawed maths my brutha, it's the truth.

If someone rips someone else off by asking them R1000 for a product that costs R100, then drop the price by R500, a whopping 50% cheaper, wow. Not really "wow" now isn't it?

In any case, Harvey, I have to disagree with you there and agree with you. Yes, I am looking to go overseas, the red tape is what is holding me back.

That the perception is that Vodacom has done more than Sentech/iburst. It's just that, a perception.

Although I like to bitch about stuff, I do most of it just to poke fun at people and see what they respond to, much like a like-minded individual running the site www.jeeva.net

He provokes people then study their reactions. It's funny how worked up people can get about simple things like the internet.

Like I mentioned in other boards as well, I have connections within Vodacom, I know what their profit margin is on these things. I have connections within WBS, and I have all but sucked their cocks to get them to participate more in these forums just to raise the PERCEPTION that they're more pro-active and care about the little things (which in my opinion they do... but they also have the "idiot-factor" working there)

Not only WBS, but also Sentech, I was a part of the much hated concerned users group that actually went and spoke with them. Sentech's incompetence amazes me even to this day, 4 months after I cancelled.

My thing is just this, I vent to get out my frustration and concentrate on a job/activity, holding grudges or silently taking it up the ass (as most South Africans do) is not for me. If I moan, I moan in a BIG way, especially when MY money is concerned.

You would probably noticed me shatting on some dude who fried his WBS modem because he wanted to solder an antenna onto it... people like that just REALLY irratate me, throwing away 3k like that is useless, and if you f!ck with my money, you f!ck with your life.

Hence why I b1tch so much, this is a service I AM BUYING from them. They didn't just one day wake up and thought, "hmmmm, let's do noone a favour and provide him a service, we are a g0d in our own rightself, he'll suck our c0ck just to get an oppertunity to use our service"

That is the attitude of most businesses, it is very rare where you get good customer service with a good product. I've ran 2 successful businesses and I'm building up a small consultancy firm who already does didata/microsoft/siebel/eskom/sanlam/absa/standard bank contracts. THEY CALL US, not because we're cheap, but because we DELIVER GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE. You can have the worst product on earth (like Sentech) and if you have brilliant customer service, you can get away with murder.

MyBroadband gives us the opperunity to raise issues. Vodacom and WBS is aware that this site is an integral part of the marketing strategies. That is part reason why Vodacom dropped their bandwidth prices.

R2/meg is still alot. It should be around R0.90 max. Ask anyone else about this. Go do your own research for once.

I've been on the internet since 1996, so you could assume I know quite a bit on what has been happening since and how this whole "thingamajik" works

I do not like "last words", I just feel compelled to write because of idiot statements made by some people. Most of the time it's in jest, but when it gets as long as this, you can be rest assured that I feel strongly about an issue and this is what my opinion is.

Take it like you want to, it doesn't have to change your life, but I emplore you not to shrug it off as utter nonsense and take it seriously for one moment and go over the statements I made.

What you have to understand about noone, is that the dictionary he uses doesn't have the following words :-

subtlety
patience
politeness

He's replaced them with strong language and pornographic references

:D

you know... come to think of it, that is absolutely correct....

noddy badge for bb_matt! :)

yup, no one did :D

you guys still don't get my nickname do you? it provides me with LOADS of fun
