Imagine being hijacked at gunpoint. Then the relief at being informed by police that your car has been recovered, only to have them tell you the car has been stolen again.
"This is something that could only happen in South Africa," said a frustrated Raymond Sathar on Thursday.
The Chatsworth resident was speaking a day after this actually played out with his 18-year-old daughter.
'They had the car in their care and then they lose it'
Sathar said his daughter and three friends had been on their way to university on Wednesday morning when she was hijacked by four men in Fleetside Road, Silverglen.
"We registered the case at Bayview police station and about three hours later, police called to tell me the car had been found in Umlazi," he said.
Sathar said police had picked him up and driven him to the scene where the car was recovered.
"They asked me to bring my spare keys, but when we get to Umlazi, they tell me the car was stolen again. How? I don't know," he said.
Sathar said he was furious at police and described them as careless. "They had the car in their care and then they lose it. I just don't understand the logic," he said.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Vincent Mdunge confirmed the hijacking and that a case had been registered, but said the car had been found in Umlazi before the details were circulated.
"Police officers noticed the car and traced the owner. When they found the car belonged to someone who did not live in Umlazi, they checked with radio control if the car had been reported stolen. However, because the information wasn't circulated at that point, they returned to the Umlazi station," he said.
He said that there the police had verified that the car had been stolen and then rushed back to where they first saw it.
"By the time police got back to where they left the car, it was gone, Police are now investigating the legitimacy of the officers' alibi and whether their actions amount to neglect."
