Restart to get better speed?

OK I am not sure if anyone else has has this problem.

Ok so your browsing along when bam, your connection drops. Anyways your router happilly reconnects and you keep browsing, but hang on things are really slow here. So you telnet you router, reboot and still its messed. Reboot the router a few more times and magic you have sub 100 local pings and things are flying.

Now what I am trying to figure out, is it Iburst or my router. Does anyone else find that if they reconnect a few times they get a "magic" connection that works the way it is meant to?

BTW: the number of reboot/reconnects to get a decent link are variable.
 
From what I have experienced it is always a Burst-i, and if you fail to start a background ping after reconnecting, you doom yourself to an awful disgusting pukifying experience.

Well that's my experience anyway ;)

The disconnects had gotten so bad that they were almost 1 a minute.

Just power the UTD off and then on and life does seem more cheery for now.
 
Just had a chat with Luis, he will be implementing a fix this evening at midnight.

Ya I did the same and I put the firmware again just for good measure and I'm happy to say I'm smiling.... :)

That's good news. My speeds are fine. Its only the disconnects that are driving me crazy right now.

Yup , I am still having disconnects , 1am , 3am and 5am again ( Not exact times , but approximates )
 
The drill to get a good connections is :
1 Reboot the IPCOP firewall/router.
2 While router reboots run upstairs and do a Eskom reset on the UDT
3 Run downstairs and watch if the link comes up.
if link doesnt come up or is horribly slow repeat step 1 to 3

Have tried that but have since decided that my equipement is fine and the issue is iBurst so I am not rebooting my IPCOP on principle at the moment.

I just do an Eskom reset on the UTD and there seems to be some improvement for awhile.

Maybe I'll give the 1, 2 ,3 a try again when I get home this evening.
 
Once I connect I ping google to check my international latency. Anything above 500 ms, I switch the modem off and on again and reconnect. Takes about 3 tries usually to find the "magic" connetion. Once I have it, it stays though. I don't know if the modem finds the wrong tower or something on the bad connections.
 
Seemed to have kept the connection going after about 1am. Speeds were good. Went to bed at 4am.

Rebooted my machine this morning , reconnected, but something seemed wrong. I was getting regular +-300ms pings to Iburst (but no packet loss) ?!?!? Usually it is 50-70ms.

What could cause that? Was Sandton and Randburg down? Was I connected to Northcliff or Bryanston? Does the distance to the base station affect latency?

Anyway I had to get to work. I can only look at it again at lunchtime. Very odd! :confused:
 
Tried the reboot, power UTD off then on.

The connection is still so slow on the international. Local is realy speedy and then it dips and there is a little packet loss.

Very inconsistant.

Hopefully the disconnect issue is resolved; we will see if it is in the clear light of day.

Next up - fix the trashy bandidth quality.

This is becoming akin to turning lead into gold with all the reboot, power-off, dance around the smoking twig bunch and rythmic chanting.

Maybe I'll pull past the sangoma tomorrow to get something to adorn or annoint my UTD with.
