SA Airways expects to pay a penalty of more than R1.5 billion for cancelling a contract with Airbus for 15 aircraft, acting chief executive Chris Smyth told MPs on Wednesday.

Smyth said the national carrier ordered a fleet of A320 planes from the European aircraft maker, but then cancelled because it discovered that it did not need them at the moment.

However, the cancellation was not properly registered and SAA therefore faced a steep cancellation fee as well as pre-delivery payments.

"It will be as high as R1.5 billion," he told Parliament's portfolio committee on public enterprises.

They need to privatise all these state entities becuse they don't give a damn about wasting taxpayer money.
 
Taxpayers already own SAA, not the first time they've been bailed out of *** and yeah their general incompetence and arrogance is 2nd to none (and that includes Telkom.) Have a search on hellopeter about SAA.
 
Dude if the mass it is ok to kill whites then it could be law so even though the anc is killing by taking our jobs and money and blowing it on holiday trips and leeches! The best part is how they handle these deals!
 
Well, duh, buy the freaking things but cancel the delivery.

In the meantime, advertise and get a freaking buyer for those planes, and stop Airbus from marking the planes with SAA decals.

IIRC Delmas is still 15 - 20 years away from actually getting any technology. I'm pretty sure I saw smoke signals being used for intertown communication the last time I was unfortunate enough to drive past?! :eek:
 
To be fair, they are negotiating a deal to buy different planes.

With cock-ups like these, it doesn't increase my confidence in flying with them.

Sackboy, I'd say as far as flying with them goes, you're safe. It's when you're dealing with the management side of things where there's no hope of coming out alive or so it would seem.
