I saw the 'Shaun Green requests an audience' thread - and realised I need to explain some stuff at all of you...

As we've been here before, with Sentech -
learn how to play chess and think strategically and ten steps ahead - and ask yourself:

1) How does this benefit ALL customers?

Answer: it doesn't.

2) What strategic benefit does it give WBS, to determine, isolate and reveal to them the users who are the most vocal and who are considered 'representative' of the mybroadband forumites?

Answer: it gives them a LOT of information, as well as allowing them to behave like Sentech and cut the most vocal 'from the herd' and cause divisions in forumites - which at present do not exist.

3) But WBS are saying they want to 'improve the service' and other such positive statements.

Answer: They're not idiots who can't tell what kind of service they're provide on a technical level, for their customers. They are quite aware of their technical problems. So any apparent urge from them to meet in the real world with forumites, must fulfil a hidden strategy of theirs.

If WBS have things they want to say - then they should avoid trying to pretend they 'want to meet with a select few' - and simply SAY whatever they want to say.

By doing this, they're observing the online ebb and flow of forum politics, as well as targeting in advance, the weak points (just as Sentech did)

Forumites should avoid the shallow idea of thinking that by WBS 'wanting to meet with them' that they're somehow special, different, or likely to be considered more important by WBS. Sentech exploited this human weakness, very effectively - as I warned the instant the 'CUG' idea began to to form. The CUG knew too little about strategy, and consumer activism, to see that any meeting could not benefit the Sentech customers at all..

Our strength lies in our anonymity, and our unwillingness to play the game that WBS want to play.

There is NO logical reason to have any forumites meet with WBS, and then 'report back' to forumites.

By revealing data to a select few, who then act as relays to the rest of us - this automatically elevates those few to a select position, as well as creates a 'pyramid structure of information flow' - with WBS at the top, followed by the pseudo-CUG, and the rest of us scrabbling for scraps below it.

Currently there is WBS, and ALL OF US as a united front. The instant one starts having 'private' meetings, it changes the nature of the united front completely, and gives WBS a strategic advantage in the future.

Meetings with individuals from this forum, makes 'holes' in the anonymous united consumer front which iBurst is facing. It makes weaknesses which iBurst can and WILL exploit..

The only person I'd suggest meet with WBS, is TheRodent - as he strategically can provide NOTHING to WBS, in order to help them divide us.

Don't be fooled into thinking that we are no threat to iBurst. We ARE.
So they've already begun moves to cause a breakdown in the unity which can and will damage them, in the future.

You have to be pretty naive, to believe any attempts by iBurst to be 'pals' at this point. Remember that iBurst and Sentech have had a number of meetings, and I'd imagine that strategies to reduce the potential damage of having a large number of customers in contact with each other, were part of the discussions..

Any variation of 'a group meeting with WBS' will give WBS an advantage and a wedge to divide the current customer unity, which - as they're quite aware - is a serious weapon that can be used against them, the instant they screw up. And they are likely to screw up.

Any meeting needs to be recorded in its entirety - if individuals are not trained to replicated verbatim what is said - then they need to tell WBS that a meeting will take place, provided the meeting can be recorded, and the entire recording be made available online for ALL to hear exactly what was said.

This is another layer of defence, to stop either the chosen few, or WBS - from using the 'he said-she said' nature of a private meeting, from sowing confusion in our ranks.

Again. There is NO reason for WBS to want to meet with representatives from this Forum, that benefits US. All the benefit from a meeting, goes to WBS - who learn (both from the meeting, and observing on this forum)

1. Where the weak points are in forumite politics
2. Who precisely can be offered 'extra' information or 'inside' information, and asked to keep it private - thus driving a wedge between the united front of the forum - and cause division.
3. Who precisely can be 'leaned' on (by being made a 'pal' of WBS) to further fragment the current united front that WBS are scared of.
4. Who is tactically naive, and immature enough, to think that being privy to 'extra' knowledge, is somehow of benefit.

Its one thing to be mature, thoughtful and clever in writing. Its another thing entirely, to approach hard-nosed businessmen in the real-world, on their own territory, and maintain an ability to avoid providing any useful strategic information to them, before during and after a meeting.

You need to understand that our unity, despite what WBS say - is a frightening thing to them - as we have a customer-consumer unity that few other markets have managed to achieve.

Yes they want to 'provide the best service' etc etc - but without the sword of united customer action dangling over their heads, its unlikely that they'll continue to behave in such a motivated way. (Historically, companies hand out whatever lousy service they think they can get away with.)

So this is business. We pay them. They provide the service. Clinical. A business arrangement. So any attempt to 'be our pals' - is not part of business, unless WBS are seeing that down the line, it can benefit THEM.

How? By providing them with useful information about us, in order to DEFUSE this unity amongst their customers.

Just as Sentech did. But Sentech did it after many months.

WBS, are doing it in advance.

I - and you - are paying WBS to provide a service. Not to be our friends.

Any data they might 'need' - can be cut and pasted to them. There's no reason for them to need to meet us - except to determine their own required future strategy in how to divide, exploit and confuse our current unity.

So the sudden desire on their part to 'meet' with forumites, should be shrugged off, and avoided.

It gains us nothing - but provides THEM with a whole range of advantages which would not be to our benefit.

As I said - the only person who'd perhaps NOT benefit THEM in any way, by meeting them, is The Rodent.
1. He has the technical skills and knowledge.
2. He does not have the product (and thus cannot be offered anything)
3. He has experience and maturity in dealing with this kind of company.
4. He doesn't like iBurst.

Tactically, the approach should be to avoid giving WBS ANY advantage in coping with the united front of customers they're currently having to deal with.

The only way to proceed and give them no chance to confuse/divide/exploit this solid wedge of united customers - is:

a) Do not meet with them.

b) The only person/people who SHOULD meet with them, are people who have no connection with this forum, and/or who are NOT customers.

Again, it can't be emphasised enough - that this Forum, and its users - represent a customer unity that is probably unequalled in the local market. Instead of a company signing up its users to some bogus 'club' - and thus controlling them on ITS terms, we represent a genuine collection of totally diverse and mostly anonymous customers, who decide for ourselves what the quality of a service is like, and whether to communicate this positively or negatively to the public via the Media.

This is POWER.

And you don't do ANYTHING to weaken this ability, or allow a company to sniff out ways to weaken this POWER that we have.

But as long as the forumites are not seeing that what we have, and which - in short bursts of activity - was demonstrated at Sentech previously, that we are POWERFUL, then WBS (or any other company) can quietly take this away from us.

So take a step back from the situation, if you're unused to tactics and business strategy - and see how WE are potentially dangerous, to the Company that we are all customers of.

The individuals at WBS may be 'nice people' - but this is irrelevent.

Understand that we currently are able to make or break them, in the long run.
They know this. And they hope we DON'T know this.

So anything that WBS (or indviduals FROM WBS) might appear to be doing, such as wanting to 'put a face to the anonymous emailer' or 'be our pals' - is WBS beginning to realise that we are a solid block of potentially dangerous (to them) customers who can damage their company, if they attempt to behave stupidly (like Sentech did)

Let WBS communicate to all of us, or none of us. I think it is a stupid mistake and bad judgement to even begin to try and work out 'who can represent us' in a meeting with WBS.

There's no need for a meeting.

Any step even contemplating this idea, gives iBurst an advantage.

Also - given the money investment by iBurst - I'm almost certain that iBurst has worked out already, that we present a possibly disruptive influence on its potential profit-gathering - and is therefore beginning to sniff out weak chinks in the united front of this Forum, in order to divide and reduce our power against it.

Any and every step, should be considered against this above framework -
as we now have a lot of power as consumers - we should make NO step stupidly or thoughtlessly, at this point, otherwise, we lose it all..

Agree'd on the point of home ground and the bully/blindside ability at a meeting like that.
But you have to communicate to gain understanding. Yip it's free research for IBurst, but this forum must educate everyone, including the provider.
Let them draw up an agenda.
We'll draw up an agenda too.
Then we'll post the complete agenda (Theirs+Ours) on this forum, then everyone can add what we want to say under each point.
Somebody grabs the main points from these, and makes a new post which only IBurst can respond to.
IBurst then respond, and we'll start again.
That is a forum meeting and is much better suited than a p2p meeting methinks.

Are you completely insane? You do know what the word paranoid means right?

Lonegunman, I do understand your concerns (and only skimmed through your post to reply with my own)

The thing is, I feel that WBS does not have the nessacary experience to make the right choices in things like port shaping, deciding what cap to implement, how the billing system should work, how to effectively communicate with customers etc etc

The only thing I'd like out of this meeting is for Shaun to realise where and what they're doing wrong, and how they can do it better to best suit US. Thus, your point of having no benefit to us, to me, seems irrelevant at this stage, because anything WBS can do better, is to the benefit of all.

So I'm going to leave this issue rather. Let Shaun read and reply to disorganised forums trying to figure out what we want, and maybe 12 months from now (when it's going to be too late and too costly for them to change from 1 way of doing things to another way of doing things) realise they made a mistake.

</end>

Noone, I hear you & I just want to say that IMO 99% of what WBS have been doing wrong & how they should've done it is already right here on the forum.

Now if WBS genuinely wanted to engage in discussion with us, why didn't they do it back in November when they started the pre-launch? They could've paid attention to what we were saying back then & completely avoided most of the problems they now sit with.

My opinion is that WBS needs to show some commitment to their customers by responding to & dealing with issues already documented here on the forum.

PS: (Pan: ) Please review what Sentech did - taking into account the unnerving & disturbing parallels between Sentech & WBS actions, I don't consider this to be paranoia at all.

Lonegunman, you seriously lost the plot here.
I think a few big ego's were seriously bruised by the whole sentech affair and they still have not recovered. Noone came out of the CUG with his dignity intact.
Iburst is stuffed if it does and stuffed if it doesnt. If they dont want our input then we can bitch and moan and compare them to the great dictator aka telkom. If they do then we can tar them with the same manipulators brush sentech.
Dont be surprised when this group is written off as a bunch of moaners, who dont have anything constructive to contribute. The good news is then we can bitch and moan some more about that.
I dont for one moment deny that people have real issues and problems on some towers and at some time, but their are also lots of people who are getting far more than they are paying for. In fact i think i remember sometime back when lonegunman reported on one of his private meetings with iburst that his plan was too use the service to its fullest while in beta and then ditch it once the cap came into place.

On an aside, what was the agreement the CUG had with sentech. Has the truth ever emerged or are you all still tied to a non disclosure agreement??

This is some of the most childish, self-important, paranoid twaddle I have ever read.

Note, you'll need flash and your sound to appreciate the full impact !

:D

Gatecrasher: If you werent around to see the slick chess-game that Sentech played to defuse the 'CUG', then ask someone what it was like. So re my post - there's no paranoia, no childishness - and only the 'self importance' of someone who saw in advance what Sentech was about to do, and then did - and is seeing what any 'normal' business WOULD do, at this point - given the growing power of this forum and its users.

Re 'twaddle' - you evidently don't know much about business strategy - or if you do - you've managed it without constructing analysis-research of customer bases and maximising profit..? :P

Anything which potentially keeps us unaware of our collective power as well-informed customers, plays into WBS's gameplan - regardless of whether that gameplan is in our best interests or not.

TheRodent - sorry to make you shudder :)

-Anyway, this is just all just on-forum to provoke some thought - and maybe a certain wariness of WBS and any thoughts of 'being their pal' or 'helping them'.

THEY'RE the multi-million rand organisation.

We're just Customers, who are lucky enough to be able to communicate amongst ourselves.

LG's points are all valid to a greater or lesser degree, depending on one's mind-set, and were certainly to some extent mulled over in my mind when posting to the original thread. Obviously, one's mind-set would be coloured by actual experience, intellect, and so on, and will dictate whether you view such points as paranoid or not. My stance is that we should be bigger than a somewhat emotive response, whether based on fact or otherwise, and indeed pursue a common objective of mutual benefit. Sure, it is also absolutely necessary to guard against corporate BS - the one sure way to do this, is to impose pre-conditions based on beneficiation of a needy third party, which was my proposal made in the original thread. Forget about fancy MoU's or HoA's, transparency, communication mechanisms, power considerations or aspects of duty, etc. - these can all be considered suitably AFTER a firm committment and evidence of realisation regarding third-party beneficiation. That's the only way to move forward, IMHO. I would propose that, seeing NOONE received the invite from SHAWN, that he pursue this aspect firstly in his personal capacity (focussing on a school as he suggested - if this proves to problematic, there are any number of worthy causes, including cancer/AIDS hospices, public libraries, etc.), and report back to the forum. All service issues to remain pending till after such initial discussion...

I just couldn't help posting this bit, which I first came across many moons ago whilst still at school, and which I've just seen again in the latest Linux User & Developer. Think about it...

"If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange apples, then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange ideas, then each of us will have two ideas." - George Bernard Shaw.

Proponents of synergistic principles would state that you would have two or more ideas, obviously - I'd like to think this to be evidenced in an open forum of this nature. Being dogmatic about anything does not promote forward movement in this context, IMHO...

CUG - Part2 -iBurst, all Burst.

I thought LoneGunman was paranoid the first time round, this time I am not so sure.
Vadacom have opend and responded to public debate, why can't WBS?

Meeting with WBS

I find it strange that Shaun needs to ask for a meeting through a 3rd party. Why couldn't he have just come out in this forum?

Secondly, its not a meeting with WBS, its a meeting with a person called Shaun, off the official premises.

Third, I agree with LoneGunman's caution.

I'll also not be offering to attend.

Re: Paranoia

It doesn't cost anybody anything to go forward and raise a few ideas about what IBurst should do in dealing with its customer base. Maybe some time and a little petrol if you stay in Johannesburg.

To be entirely honest I don't think that this forum has a massive influence over WBS's decision making policy - obviously they'd like to keep us happy - but we're about at max 100 users of their 2500 users?. I think worrying about conspiracy theories is a bit silly. We're so divided in degrees of moderation and opinion at the best of times that WBS doesn't need to expend a massive amount of effort and time to divide us.

I think this meeting is (from WBS's pov) about polling an relatively active, experienced and intellectual user base about what they want to see from the product - its not about fixing all the problems that we've experienced - those are implementation problems - they are not product problems and they have to be fixed going forward. They want to know from us what type of packages we'd use and purchase - so that they can sell more of their product.

Quite frankly it doesn't concern me in the slightest if WBS had a private meeting with No One or some one... or any one... They're accepting an influx of ideas - the more we contribute the more likely they are to tailor packages, products and services to our liking.

Treating WBS as the enemy is counter productive - unless you're on ASDL or Sentech.. and even then wth?

I'd just like everybody to calm down about this "meeting" and see it as what it is a chance to communicate what we'd like out of the product over the next couple of months.

I also firmly beleive that it should be at least once person to person over beers and pretzels or biscuits and tea - because moderation is the best way of dealing with a situation like this and person to person meetings always encourage moderation a lot more then an internet forum... for some reason anonymity often brings out the worst in people.

And now I am going to go and find a nice big rock to cower behind...

//picks up rock that twixt is cowering behind...:D

On the issue of how many iBursters also frequent MyADSL (or at least the iBurst forum anyways), I am willing to go out on a limb and say very close to 100% of the 2500+ iBursters, this would be over a 7 day period, in which they would visit & lurk at least once to catchup. Besides which, there have been so many iBurst problems lately affecting way more than a handful of us, it is logical they would find their way here, looking for solutions. Such is what my crystonian balletjie says ;).

iBurst does not = your friend. Even Shaun Green != your friend. He is a cog in a corporate machine built around the concept of making money.
And thats where the rub is - cold hard cash is in play here.

Lonegunman has the right of things I think. When the CUG met with Sentech, the next thing we knew Sentech was pimping the fact that some users met with them in every news source that would listen.
Basically they got tons of good PR for appearing "customer centric" and in fact did precisely nothing but listen to some users.

iBurst can quite easily do the same, and probably will if it diffuses some of the bad PR its ben getting lately.

Meeting and listening to your problems != any practical result. They only have to listen. There is no prerequisite that they act, beyond placating you all with "It will be fixed soon" excuses...

A mass meeting with iBurst reps in an IRC chat will be the best way forward, since anyone can attend - even the media. That way the whole shebang is recorded and if iBurst promise anything (which is HIGHLY unlikely), then you have the proof of their intentions...

The thing that sticks in my mind about iBurst is what the CEO said at one reseller meeting way back in November I think it was.
He spoke about how everyone was "going to make a lot of money".

IBurst may be technically better than Sentech, but the same greedy mentality prevails...

I'm not saying its wrong to make lots of cash out of an enterprise.
However if iBurst really was "socially responsible" and cared enough about the SA broadband situation, they would have priced their product much lower with expectations of losing moey in the short run, but coining it as economies of scale kicked in...
If this were the case, I would have expected Mtshali to have said something more like "It will take some time to build up the economies of scale, but once that happens, we will make a lot of money".

He didn't. iBurst is here to make $$$ from the outset, so dont expect Mtshali to shelve his new Porsche because you can't play WoW :D
