Seagate 1TB - is it part of the bad batch?

I've been looking at increasing my ever dwindling storage space, and I see that Prophecy has a Seagate ST31000340SV 1TB 7200rpm hard drive for R1,249. They also have a 5400rpm Western Digital Caviar WD10EADS 1TB (green) for R1,194.

I do video editing, so I need large storage and good performance, so I'm thinking of getting 2 Seagate drives, as they're 7200rpm and have 32mb cache. I know Seagate has had a bad reputation with their recent drives, so I'm hesitant to get one. Does anyone know if this specific Seagate drive part of the bad batch?

Reliability is an important factor. I can't really afford a drive crashing on me.

Look at the Samsung drives....

They have a better reputation atm.. I have 2 in my machine atm, gonna get another 2 really soon.
 
I'll think I'll go for the Samsung then. Sybaritic has a Samsung Spinpoint 32MB 7200RPM 1TB hard drive for R965. Cheaper as well!
 
I haven't seen anything to suggest that it is the 7200.11 series. So it should be fine. I have a 500GB and 1TB 7200.12 for about 3 months now and no issues.
 
The newest Seagate 1TB is the 7200.12 one AFAIK. It shouldn't cost you more than R950 (Sybaritic is a wee bit expensive, usually around 0-10% more than I pay).
My 7200.11 (SD15) gave issues when I bought it, I replaced it... then the new one (SD81) gave an issue or two, then for three months nothing... now it's started again. Going to give it back yet again this week. So it's all completely random at times if the Seagates give trouble.

For high performance, I suggest you do a RAID5 setup, so get 3 or 5 x 1TB drives (for 2 or 4TB space). It costs more but you have redundancy should a drive fail.

Hey, the new Batch of Seagates drives are

The 7200.12 series
and note the code ST31000340NS OR 341NS

Makes sure that you don't get the 7200.11 Series they are all faulty.

PS esquire sells the 1TB drives for 850.00 incl.vat
 
I got the samsung 1TB for R860 and happy with it, not as silent as my WDs but performance is great...
transfer rates that peak around +94mb/s real world not benchmark.

Read some reviews on the net, and Samsung is one of the best performers at the moment - so I think Samsung's the way to go.

I think I'll stay away from the Seagate drives for now. Most I see for sale are the ST31000340SV and not the ST31000340NS (thanks Nokkie).

RAID is probably the ultimate option, but for a quick solution, I think 2 solo drives will do for now.

np, I guess chaning to another brand is a whole new experience..
But I have 2 add that I was one of the lucky few to get my hdd crashed due to their stupid inconcestancy failing of hdd's ,poor Seagate...

And it was a full 1TB, waisted.

as a matter of fact the 1tb is still laying on my case waiting to go in for repairs... Have to take it next week :/

Its truly a shame...
Maybe I'll go with Samsung hdd's from now, who knows... :D
 
My samsung HDD's have an error (clicking sound and PC freezes every now and then, duno which one coz they in RAID), and they crashed causing me to lose 320GB, thought my pc was gg and i never thought i would say this, but i love vista now because it repaired the bad sector or w.e. I havent had any problems with my Seagate 7200.11 500GB.
Just thought i'd throw that in here :P Also, the seagates can be fixed via firmware update AFAIK
