Durban has spent R6.5 million on its official 2010 Web site, which will showcase the city's Fifa World Cup developments to the country and visitors.

Head of Durban's strategic projects unit, Julie-May Ellingson, says the Web site will initially serve as an information portal for residents and visitors looking for information on the city.

While the price for the Web site may be high, she says it will be a “platform to showcase the city and its 2010 developments to the rest of the world” and falls within the city's budget.

“It is important that the Web site provides a productive, memorable and frustration-free experience for our visitors. We wanted to create a Web site that would be a source of useful information for tourists who want to visit the city, as well as showcase Durban as being a technically savvy city,” she notes.

The Web site – www.fifaworldcup.durban.gov.za – will have features such as a live Webcam of the Moses Mabhida stadium, the city's host venue. Interactive postcards and image galleries also feature in an attempt to make the Web site user-friendly, adds Ellingson.

at a push this side cost 80k (at a push) Any 1 see any tenders going out for this or was this straight to someones buddy?
 
So thats the way to make money in durbs, create subpar webpages
 
Jees.... even at the height of working for a webdev company that overcharged for their k@k, that site should have cost at MOST R250k......

R6.5m is beyond excessive unless there are a whole lot of aspects to that site that haven't been revealed yet.
 
lol i jsut installed silverlight to "experience the full website" and all it does is the lame pic layout thing. this could be done in flash so simply and then not require the user to download silverlight :-/

Also in the meta data for the site we find this: content="[email protected]" so clearly this site was done by http://www.adaptit.co.za/ (their website confirms this)

K fair enough they are doing the content (1years worth) for this... but that still leaves like +- 6mill for?

Even tho silverlight has a reasonable penetration % most browsers are flash enabled already. ie having done this in flash would have saved quite a few people having to download the 4mb installer to see the "Advanced functionality" of the site.

either way both do what they are supposed to, im just saying flash would have been the 1st way we would have gone. but yeah :P

You're saying the price tag is justified? Why does Durban need a website for the World Cup? South Africa is hosting the world cup not only Durban, if it had been for the official South African world cup site, more justifiable yes. So let's for a minute suggest that every province has a budget of R6.5 million for a web site.....

That's R59 million of Tax Payers money...potentially....
And you're happy to justify that? I realise not all provinces are hosting games etc but still.... They could have spent that amount on one site and had different sub sections for each city/province...

But of course let's use a BEE company and only spread the money to those individuals that are more equal than others :rolleyes:

Why couldn't all the cities/provinces put money in together, it would be cheaper in the long run, and the left over money could have gone to a better cause like cleaning the streets up for the world cup...
 
Complete rip-off! What did they pay for the companies start-up, servers, staff salaries, etc. Sigh got to love it...
