TWO problem pitbull terriers in East London’s Cambridge suburb caused mayhem on Sunday morning when they entered a neighbourhood yard and savaged the owner’s pet boerboel.
It took bullets from the gun of Tereza Swieger’s brother-in-law to end nearly two hours of bloody carnage.
One of the attacking dogs was killed on the scene and the other limped away and died the following morning.
Sasha, Swieger’s boerboel, was put down later that night having suffered extensive wounding in the mauling.
Pictures from the scene afterwards show a massive amount of blood on Swieger’s driveway and her white car, under which Sasha tried to hide.
Residents said yesterday the two dogs had often terrorised residents and other pets in the Cambridge West area.
Buffalo City Municipality and the SPCA confirmed they had received complaints from people about the two animals.
The owner of the dogs hasn’t been seen since and police are trying to trace him.
For now, Swiegers and her children were trying to get over the trauma of the attack.
“It was like a film as we watched in horror as Sasha hid under our car trying to get away from these two dogs,” said Swiegers.
“She was in pain and my children had to watch the horrible fight as she was trying to defend herself.”
Swiegers said neighbours came out and watched in shock as the dog was mauled.
She said her son Daniel, nine, who has Down Syndrome, bravely rushed to intervene but was stopped by Swiegers.
“Daniel wanted to save her. He saw that she was in pain and tried to be brave.
“We stopped him because these dogs would have mauled him,” said Swiegers.
They threw bricks and water at the two dogs but nothing could deter them.
Just before the attack, Swiegers had been preparing to leave the house.
As she opened her gate the two dogs ran onto her property and chased after Sasha.
Swiegers said they tried to call the police but there was no response.
She then called her brother-in- law, Brendon Drake, after the attack had gone on for about one- and-a-half hours.
“When he arrived he shot both dogs. One died on the scene and the other ran home limping.”
Drake said he had never seen such horror in his entire life.
“These dogs are like trained fighter dogs – they came here to kill Sasha. It is as if someone is breeding them to fight other dogs.”
Sasha was rushed to a veterinary clinic in Amalinda, where Swiegers made the agonising decision to have her dog put down.
The vet’s report, seen by the Daily Dispatch, revealed extensive wounds all over the boerboel’s body.
Municipal spokesperson Sam Ngwenya said people had laid prior complaints with the dog licensing department.
The SPCA’s Allen Westerberg also confirmed there had been complaints about the two dogs.
Westerberg said the second pitbull that survived the initial shooting died at the SPCA yesterday morning.
Swiegers has opened a case against the owner of the two dogs.
But police spokesperson Captain Mluleki Mbi said the owner hadn’t been found yet. “The police are still waiting for the owner to respond, but under the Animal Protection Act a case of allowing vicious dogs to be at large has been opened by police,” said Mbi. - By BONGANI FUZILE, Crime Reporter
These are such disgusting animals. I really hope we ban these mindless killers from our society.
Please read my second post as well. I was pissed off when I posted this, but holding owners accountable is a much better idea. IE.. if your Pitbull kills a child you should go to jail for murder.
