Wimbledon church charges tennis fans £20 a day to park on top of graves

Desperate tennis fans with nowhere to park for the Wimbledon tournament are paying £20 to leave their cars on graves in a nearby churchyard.

St Mary's Church in Wimbledon Village is offering spectators parking spots on consecrated ground for £20 a day, directly above the remains of parishioners.

The proceeds of the unofficial parking scheme go to charity but some residents are angry with the plan, describing it as 'disrespectful'.

Merc doesn't being an atheist kind of imply that the sack of meat buried there is just that...meat.

I wouldn't say I'm at atheist. I'd say I'm agnostic. Regardless, that does not detract from the issue that a human being is buried there. Can you imagine what you would feel if you had a family member or friend buried there and they parked over it? I can't believe they would do this. It's shockingly disgusting and utterly disrespectful.
 
I don't see the problem. The person is dead.

Why is it that people tend to think that a grave is some kind of special holy place? We remember people not by their grave but by their influence on our lives?

But that is just my opinion. Each to their own.
 
I'm more worried about the church raising funds by selling parking. Despite the disrespectful action, churches are supposed to raise funds through the tithing of members. By having to raise funds in this way it just shows that the members aren't supporting the church as they are supposed to. Just a thought.

Well the church donates all the proceeds to charity according to the article.

So if you can help people in need by letting someone park in your graveyard, why not?

It's just a matter of respect I think, not necessarily sacro-sanct. Irrespective of your religion\beliefs, it really is disrespectful.
 
Just to let you guys know. In todays paper (London Metro) the church involved has issued a statemement saying that while they do allow parking on church grounds, people were taking the proverbial and parking on top of graves. For all intents and purposes the cars have been moved.

So these actions have been stopped.

And disrespectful to whom? The dead person? How can you can disrespect someone who doesn't know or care?

No its disrespectful to the people who paid for the grave and the stone.

Would you like it if I parked on your "stoep" with my 4x4?

Also remember for some of these people it is a shrine to a loved one.

Ja because no where else in the world does this happen. In S.A. for instance people don't use their initiative, they resort to crime to make their quick buck :rolleyes:

Someone could build a parking space over my grave, and I wouldn't care. Provided I never get parked in again so long as I live. :p

I mean... It's not like I'd have anywhere to go in a big hurry.

If Jesus wants to turn me into a zombie during the endtimes, he can ask the guy with the blue Prius to please move his car. ;)
