Lesotho Telkom is buyingg bandwidth from Internet Solutions:

Here is the catch, they are going to run cable across the border to Eskom where Eskom have run fiber along all there high voltage cables.

The fiber runs on the top 2 cables which are the earth.

Eskom plans on providing, high capacity long haul solutions to its customers !!!!
 
Where may I ask does eskom get their bandwidth? Or is your point being on that theyre getting a VERY fast internat connection? ;)
 
It can happen, the way I understand it - I'm too lazy to read through all the bumph in the Act, but here's an extract that points to the possibility of it happening:

(38)(3) No licence to provide a national long-distance telecommunication service shall be granted to Transnet or to Eskom, but such a licence may, with the concurrence of the Minister and the Minister for Public Enterprises, be granted to a subsidiary company of Transnet or Eskom.

Nada....
The surge arrestors protecting the line(i.e High Voltage line) also protect ze fibre...
 
ic, to my knowledge....

Eskom was given a special permission to run a fibre network to replace their old run down radio network which was used for communication between substations and the National Control Centre.

It is used for other communications things like the Eskom PAX system, Countrywide WAN and remote telemetering of customers and many other communication related activities within Eskom.
This network is managed by Esitel which subsidiary of Eskom Enterprises.

About Telkom, I dunno how they come in, probably they get something out of the PAX system as it uses the regular Telkom numbers.

The PLC project is sort of a way of finding the cheapest solution as the there are literally thousands of Power lines running around the country...so no need of new infrastructure.
/me thinks is gonna take time to sort problems associated with this project....

Correction on a earlier post: It seems a Big A** lighting (with a surge of the 2.5 x the voltage of the line) can damage the Power line so there goes our fibre aswell...

I think Eskom is to provide the long haul,

It will be the duties of the other shareholders to provide managmenet, last mile. etc.

The fact is Eskom have more bandwidth avalible the Telkom and so does transnet ! makes you wonder.
 
On the topic of Eskom, they are planning to use the congo river as a source of power. Heard it on the radio today. Not sure that it'll have any effect on us though.

Read the post again, the bandwidth is coming from IS. Eskom is providing the lines.

In my mind, since Eskom owns the powerlines they are not crossing property boundries but connecting cables to it so it would be fine to do it. It's the same as you running ethernet all over your house, perfectly legal, the moment you want to run it to your neighbour it becomes illegal.

Nothing. Ethernet over powerlines is actually ethernet going over the copper powerlines, you get a thing with a 3 prong plug on the one end and ethernet port on the other. They might use this in future for backhauls if they ever did it.

PTA is still doing a test but thats about all I have heard.

The fastest that I have seen Eskom be able to run PLC is at 14 mbs so the fiber is for long haul and large amounts of cable.

I think the PLC will be a last mile access solution.
