I'm getting really annoyed now, my ADSL connection reconnects every few days for no apparent reason.

1) 384 line
2) Netgear DG834GT have tried multiple firmware versions
3) Router is on UPS
4) Telkom have put me on a new line in the DB box and can't see a fault with the line.

The connection will drop/reconnect every few days. I've spoken to Telkom, they say its not them and they've checked the line. It's not the router losing power as it's on UPS. I contact the ISP OpenWeb and they sent me a log pointing to the fact that the line was losing sync with the exchange. Telkom couldn't see a problem but put me on a new line. Problem is still there.

I mailed Openweb last night and now they say it's the router that's disconnecting, I don't think it is. It's either the ISP or Telkom dropping the connection every now and again.

How do I figure where the problem lies? I'm going to try a different router tomorrow and see what happens.

Why bother?
No matter what you throw at this problem eventually you will be disconnected and re-connected.
This just seems like a waste of effort.

As I mentioned, will be trying one tomorrow.

A completely different brand?

My two netgears would routinely drop sync, using a microcom now which never drops sync unless there is a problem at the exchange side.

Same thing has always happened to me. Just got to live with it. It's a Telkom problem and I don't think there's anything we can do about it.

The reason it's a problem is because as soon as I use up my 3 gig international cap, it keeps going....until the router disconnects, upon which point the ISP registers that I'm ove the limit and limits me to local only.
Yes the router I'm trying tomorrow is a completely different brand.

The first few months I had this ADSL, from March and April, I had no such problems. Only since about May has this disconnecing rubbish started. ADSL is supposed to be 'always on' internet, not most of the time on internet.
