Unions in South Africa are finalising preparations for a strike on Wednesday, which they say will halt work on stadiums for the 2010 World Cup.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), whose members include construction workers, says about 70,000 people will down tools nationwide.

The NUM wants a 13% pay rise, while employers are offering 10%.

A court on Monday rejected a request from the employers to declare the indefinite strike illegal.

NUM national spokesman Lesiba Seshoka told the BBC that its members were all set for tomorrow.

"We are going ahead with the strike. We are doing the final preparations," he said.

Organisers have set December as the deadline for the completion of all construction work.

Six entirely new stadiums are being built for the World Cup, while four are being modernised.

Correspondents say that so far, the work seems to be on schedule.

This is the first time the football World Cup will be hosted in Africa

They only have to pay them fo another 2 - 6 months then they all be with out work anyway so i do not see the fuss.

and once again the factions wave around the golden septor....hate these bastards, who do they think they are, really? And the problem is the more the factions get done the more theyre power grows..give in to one strike and in two months time you will have two....

Ja, I think they asked that question on 702... but the answer was that most of these guys work for contractors so after the stadiums are complete they will switch to other contracts. They did not simply hire them just for the stadiums. These are full-time employees.

What will they build in this economy?

Does no one know how to deal with unions these days?

You go into your little think tank, without the union bossies, and when you come out you say: "Well, we made a great compromise! We were offering 10%, but you demanded 13%. Since we're having lots of trouble in this economic time, we've only got X to spend. So we're going to pay you're 13% raise, but we're going to lay off the rest off the workers we can't afford."

strikes are simply a form of racketeering, gangsterism, and extortion.

if people have problems with the t&c then they should leave or not have signed up in the first place, or each individually make there case heard in a court room.

sstrikes shoulld be made illegal.

well the salaries should have been negotiated from the start, with predetermined increases based on performance etc. It didnt take a rocket scientist to realise that these monkeys were going to strike. FFS, take a look around, just about every industry has had a strike in the last month.

Except the IT industry :p

"Except the IT industry"

Gee, wonder why. Must be because monkeys doesn't understands teh compooterz.

If I were you I would watch what term I use to address other people. The term "monkey" is deemed very racist by some and you could get in serious trouble should anybody from the Human Right Commission or the like read your comment.

Just a little tip for future reference ;)

Just heard that they've blocked William Nicol near Monte Casino. They have baseball bats and other weapons and have already turned to "vowlence". Only took them 24hrs. Nice one, idiots. And when the Weld Cup is gone, who you gonna blame? Apartheid!

Saw this tweet on twitter..

Construction workers singing and jogging round the block in central CT. Maybe getting fit for all the double-quick work after the strike.
lol :p

You misunderstand me. I'm not referring to blacks when using the word "monkey". I'm referring to the many South Africans who think striking is the best way to solve problems and maintain productivity at optimal levels. They are monkeys.

Nothing to do with colour...
