What is EDGE? (for the uninitiated like me)

Enhanced Data for Global Evolution

A technology that gives GSM the capacity to handle services for the third generation of mobile telephony. EDGE provides three times the data capacity of GPRS. Using EDGE, operators can handle three times more subscribers than GPRS; triple their data rate per subscriber, or add extra capacity to their voice communications. EDGE uses the same TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) frame structure, logic channel and 200kHz carrier bandwidth as today's GSM networks, which allows existing cell plans to remain intact.

Take note of the big OR - you can do either of the three. Off course you can do all 3 and get 1/9 of what you had before.
 
Wow, another ridiculously capped, overly expensive service in the making. Yay. Can't wait.
 
I just read about this new service that MTN are going to offer, this edge, in the article they say R10 per megper sec, which is expensiv, they also say that the price will decrease as data usage becomes more prevelent, what a crock of crap, since when have we had a decrease in service fees as the service has become more widely used. :(

Other terminology to describe edge?

Are there any other terminology used to describe edge, internationally or locally?

Example if the phone specs says:
- GSM Tri-band (900/1800/1900)
- GPRS Class B, multislot class 10

Will I be able to dail out on edge? Or is it a case where: if the phone specs doesnt say 'edge', than it is not edge enabled?

I am sure you will be pleased to know that our main purpose in rolling out EDGE has been to offer higher data speeds and we have achieved this.

Kompete. It is probably worth while browsing this site and checking out the answers because the answers to your questions are all detailed and probably quite a lot more and it would be a very long post to repeat it all. There is EDGE detail, MTN's EDGE approach, websites, handset details etc

I tried searching for the answers already. And now searched for EDGE detail, MTN's EDGE approach, handset details on this site. Maybe the answers are there, but too cryptic for me to understand.

Let me re-phrase my one question: "What terminology (under phone specs) is normally used to describe that a handset is edge enabled?"

E.g. I'm considering the PDA2K and the specs read:
GSM/GPRS (quad band) module:
850/900/1800/1900 MHz

So does this mean its edge enabled? or is there a specific thread that answers this?

No. If your phone has EDGE, it would be clearly indicated on the pack, manual and somewhere on the phone's menu.

EDGE is too big a technology to be hidden. If in doubt, check your mobile phone manufacturer's website for full specifications.

Thanks Alha001, thats spot on...
If a product supports EDGE, the manufacturer will be sure to note it in the specs.
