i recently purchased Iburst, live in the Durban area, signal strength has been relatively good with noticeable increases in browser and download speed as expected(previously I had ISDN, could not get adsl through telkom line ineffeciences in my area). However, I was really hoping to be able to play on international game servers, but ping is worse than ISDN and very erratic from 365ms to 480ms in one test, sometimes with request timeouts. Is there any hope.......

no there isn't. wireless pings are more erratic and iburst was not designed to give good latency to play games. it all depends on the type of game you want to play though. its good for maybe a strategy but not something like a fast paced FPS game. If thats why you wanted broadband iburst is NOT the product for you. oh and if your download speed is just 'noticable' then something is wrong, it should be around 10 - 14 times what you got on ISDN

thanks for your frank response slimothy, even if it isn't what I wanted to hear. In all fairness my download speeds are much better than my previous ISDN speeds, and the cost of Iburst against Telkoms dial-up costs are defnitely a plus. With regard to online gaming, especially for games like BF1942, what is the best solution/service in SA???

The Shaped HomeDSL384 package worked beautifully for me but now Telkom seems to be messing with local pings and port prioritisations again...

yeah I'd agree with that. HomeDSL384's pings will beat iBursts pings hands down and still remain affordable. Problem is it is only 3 times the speed of ISDN for other things.

If you seriously need reliable international pings for an affordable price ISDN seems the only option...

actually no, thats not the only option, infact it isn't even an option at all. He obviously wants broadband, not fancy dial up, and the pings on isdn aren't anything special. my pings on iburst beat isdn.

To international servers? My iburst pings are atleast 3x higher than ISDN :(.

yeah well one minute the pings are gold the next they're poop you know how it is.

Is it really worth using ISDN just to play on intl. servers though, you'll end up paying for phonecalls, everything else is slow and ISDN is pretty much obselete.
iBurst isn't crap on every international server, NL and DE servers are OK.

iBurst is sucky for gaming in my experience, regardless of the server you're using. I play RTS games mostly and iBurst still blows... The only reason I'm sticking with iBurst is coz Telkom is Satan incarnate. When the SNO comes out... *sigh*

This is not good as in december I had no problem playing everquest and now it just bites... If i dont have a constant ping runnung I actually get dropped by the game server. One of my concerns here too is that I am sure it is wasting bandwidth to have pings running to keep the connection alive what is going to happen if caps are intoduced, are we going to get extra bandwidth to run pings?

BTW adsl is not an option at this point for CK as he mentions that his line quality is to poor. :D (just a pointer) :D

heres a little pointer for you, the default ping size is 32 bytes, do you have any idea how tiny that is? but ok, lets say you dont want to have 32 byte pings, you can change the size... to say 1 byte like this ping -t -l 1 www.iburst.co.za
and of course they won't give you extra bandwith for pings, its your choice to run the pings or not, and really lets assume you send 10 pings a second (now we all know the number is more like one or two), then that means you would burn up about 843KB in 1 day, which means in a real world senario with 3 pings a second (which is still optimistic) is 243KB a day. Find your sweet spot and you wont have to ping anyways.

Ok how about some positive advice to fixing the problem ?
It is really getting boring to try and defend my experiences to you

And YOU know that there is such a thing on the Bryanston-BS and Northcliff-BS?

How exactly do you know this since you are a Kempton-BS iBurster?

lots of assumption. well that and the only other tower in range isn't up yet

um.. i dont know where some of u guys get your information... but isdn is one of the best choices for international gaming... i current run a 128k isdn from cape town and i get pings playing most FPS games from anything 180 - 250 depending on the game and how many are playing at the time... most peeps using IBURST, SENTECH or any wireless cant even compete at that lvl locally let alone international pings... im currently playing everquest 2 online... and having absolutely no prob with gaming ie no lag issues... adsl is the best locally ... but internationally i would suggest isdn for the best pings... downloading is another matter.... soz but iburst doesnt cut it for gaming ...

Incorrect :

On Joint Operations localally I am in the area of 100 , Battfield I have seen 60
Internationally I am in the area of 300 , depending where the server is
