Hi there!

I am signing up for a Telkom line and they are asking what modem I want.

Options are

Mega 105
Mega 200
Billion
USB

Not only do I not know what those are, but I can't seem to find any info on them. Only manuals on how to install them! Can someone please tell me where I can find info on these to choose one. Or can you possibly give me advice on which one to get.

Thanks in advance.

Run as far away from the 105WR as you can. Just search mybroadband forums for "105wr" to see how many problems they've got.
Info on 105WR: http://www.telkomphones.co.za/mega105wr.htm

The 200 is not that bad. It's sort of a rebranded Billion, but modified for Telkom. Not the best choice.
Info on 200: http://www.telkomphones.co.za/mega200.htm

The Billion they mention is probably the 800VGT. Nice router, best of the choices they've given you. The Telkom DO broadband website lists this modem as one of their products.

The USB...I'm not sure what that is.

Another decent offering Telkom should have is the Siemens 762SX. May be worth your while looking into that. It's also offered on Telkom DO B.band site.

I would advise however not to sign a contract and rather buy a modem outright.

I Agree with the Siemens..it's a decent modem and has VOIP functionality as well.

Stay as far away from the others as possible, especially the MEGA 105WR, it's a piece of junk...

Just a side note. Finding hardware products on the Do b/band website can be difficult. I found them this way:

http://www.do.co.za/broadband/index.html
Click on 'Products'
Click on 'do Broadband offerings'
New window opens. Click on any of the offerings 'Product Details'
Another fricken window opens. Click on 'ADSL modems' (bottom left)
Another window. Click on the large grey/black box towards bottom left.
DSL modems are shown.

Why is it so hard to get product details. have you tried the sizwebroadband website. It is easy to use.
http://www.sizwebroadband.co.za/contact
Click on 'produts'
Click on 'Read more' to get the product details.

I just find the Sizwebroadband site easy to use.

Sorry to hijack this but I got a netgear DG834GUv5 modem with the telkom branding and firmware. Just wanna know what version should I choose if I want to update the firmware since this model does not exist on netgear's site.

Don't use any other firmware except releases from Telkom (unless you want to brick it) and only when you are having problems with current firmware. F/W rule of thumb: If it aint broke don't try fix it.
The official firmware for this unit is available to download here: http://www.hcom.co.za/firmware/Netgear_DG834GUv5_DO_TKV6.00.26.zip

I have been following the post with interest. I have one of the original 'so called' Marconi PREMIUM Combo routers which turned out to be anything but that.

Looking to replace that, with around +- R 1 200 to spend - must have wireless router functionality as well. In addition to the above listed, have also seen brands such as Sitecom (Makro), Belkin and Netgear.

Kinda lost a bit now.

Anyone to comment further - also if you can indicate the cheapest outlet to purchase from.

Thanks

Further to my post above that lists the local f/w link for the dg834guv5, the f/w is infact listed on netgear.com website and it is the same version...6.0026, so the locally provided version is definitely the the latest version and is designed for the locally supplied router.
