iburst promotion at Sandton at 25 Kbps !!!! :(

I just came back from Sandton City where WBS is promoting their iburst product. I was very disappointed to only realise speeds of about 25 kbps.
I tried downloading the Java SDK from www.java.sun.com as well as downloading the asterisk toolkit from www.asterisk.org. I was amazed that even in a promotion scenario, i could not get the promised 1 Mbps or at least 20% of that. This is a promotion and i would have expected much better than what i got.

no one promised 1mbps, they promise "up-to" 1mbps. I just tried the same SDK from java.sun.com and got 90KB/s.
 
this is a promo that is supposed to convince us to buy iburst. we are not even getting what you are getting. common sense tells me that when trying to sell anything you showcase the best case scenario not the worst case scenario.
 
at least you know up front what you can look forward too :) some people would complain when they get home with product in hand and get **** speeds compared to the demo. BUT I do hear what you saying and agree 100%
 
slimothy, I envy you. The best I could get was 30kb/s. I think it's time to invest in a parabolic antenna.
 
its not all fun and games downloading at breakneck speeds, I fill up harddrives, run out of things to download etc etc. I will have to call iBurst retarded on this one though, if I were them I would conduct a less honest promo and have all downloadable files linked to a download manager so the speeds everyone saw would be multithreaded and I would have them using firefox with the tweaks to multithread webpages. Then I would have got some intern to stay up for 2 nights finding the sweet spot to guarantee a good demo. However had they been like me, and someone bought the modem and went to thier house next door to Sandton City, plugged it in and got 25KB/s they would have came to this forum to complain about how crap iBurst is. So I guess they did the right thing. So here are the facts, it can be real good (mmm 120 KB/s) or it can be crappy (25 KB/s). So now you know

Actually, WBS guarantee a minimum of 64Kbits/s at all times ITO the contract I signed, and up to 1Mbits/s when within the 3GB bandwidth cap.

:eek: - if that's a cry for sympathy or something, then where's the sympathy when the rest of us have sub-56Kbps slowness...?

Anyways, to show that I'm a good sport I will give you the requested sympathy & say: ag shame hey - terrible being able to download everything a breakneck speeds - definitely fun & games ;)...
 
thanks ic, i would have prefered it in a 500MB video card message, but i'll let it slide :)
 
Speed Prob's on D/L

I am so glad we did not gippo the speeds.

No guys, come on, speed can never be truely measured on specific days.

Some days good, some days bad.

Try it on ISDN and see what happens.... (would like to mention other broadband suppliers)

Try not to just zero in on our worst capabilities......

Have you never had a good moment with Iburst.....?

Did it just last for 10 minutes .....?

Be nice once in a while.... promise it does not hurt...

I get 38Kilobytes (KB/s) per second, or 314kilobits per second (kbps) to the
J2EE 1.4 SDK at sun.com on DSL 512. I typically get full 512kbps to sites like kernel.org, but then again, Slowlaris has always sucked a bit.
 
Well Mr Rodent WOW.

Just had a look on your kernel.org. I get 116 KB/s so next time you are in a rush for that latest ISO give me a call and i will download it for you on my Iburst.

I get 60KB/s to kernel.org. My DSL has had downtime measured in minutes. Next time your iBurst goes down for the umpteenth time the same day, and you're bleating for 2kb/s to get your email, give me a call, and I'll POP3 your mail FOR you.

Plus I get to play games locally at SAIX.net at pings of 20-25ms at worst. I download torrents at more than fair speeds, and I get local internet access for free.

I find it so strange how other people know so much more about my internet experience than i do.

For the record rodent i have had 2 sub par days in the last two months.

For the rest i have had the speeds i posted above. So thanks for the offer but i dought i will need you to pop my email for me.

Good...I tested my UTD on the Sandton tower today..disconnected several times...for the few minutes that I was live it barely got past 20kbps...slow slow slow, whats new. Is there differences between towers?
 
Well i am currently running a trial of iBurst for the second day, and am fairly impressed after many long years of 2 Pc's on one 56K. Being located in Lonehill the signal is pretty crappy (hovers between 40%-60%) since i am using the Indaba (Fourways/Dainfern) tower. But stability has been quite amazing compared to my expectations. I have been alive for at least 7 hours straight with no problems.

Has anyone had any experience with the antennas? If i am gonna invest in iBurst i am gonna need an antenna and I would like some sort of idea of the improvement offered through use thereof.
