Saudis get 700 lashes for party

Riyadh - A Saudi judge sentenced seven young men and four women to up to 700 lashes and jail terms ranging up to 10 months for attending an "immoral" party, a Saudi newspaper reported.

The 11 revellers, including two Iraqis and nine Saudis aged between 18 and 37, received sentences of between 400-700 lashes and between 4-10 months in prison, Saudi Arabia's al-Watan newspaper said.

The group had been arrested in the northern Saudi district of al-Ha'il in late June on charges of drinking alcohol at a mixed gender party.

Police said they had kept the group of young men and women under surveillance for days before arresting them as they drove away from one of their "debauched" late-night parties.

They said they had found araq, a strong alcoholic beverage made from dates, hidden in soft-drink bottles in the car.

Alcoholic drinks are banned in Saudi Arabia. The punishment for drinking alcohol is a public lashing. Private meetings between unmarried men and women is also severely punished.

They are actually tolerant. 50yrs ago they would have stoned the bastards to death. They should be happy they are still alive!

Yeah but our kids are out doing serious crimes, these kids (young adults actually given they were all over 18) were just having a few dops at a party. Saying that though, they probably KNEW what they were donig was against the law and are now facing the punishment. I wonder how long a trial takes in that area, thats where I find our criminal justice systems falls over is in the amount of time and *****footing it takes to get from the arrest to conviction.
 
So you guys say this is a good thing, and the rest of their warped mentality, that is ok as well, stoning your wife because she went shopping without a headcovering, or even spoke to the postman??
 
These are the little things that create the breeding environment for the discontent from within, the younger modern generation will arise within the next decade or two and there will be drama; how many more of it's own children will Islam kill, hurt and maim in/on the altar to Allah ? ( and get away with it ?)

Religious fundamentalism does not have a place in the future of humanity, either it will be squashed or left behind voluntarily or all of humanity will perish because of it.

Does one need to explain further, example my disapproval in their belief system would cause certain folk to tell me to be tolerant of their belief. I have a problem with this, because it allows this type of behaviour to continue unquestioned, destroying lives. But then you knew this already.

Well, the judge did say the party was "immoral", and we all know that we wouldn't have morals without religion, so...

The Saudis were nomads until the discovery of the oil and the revenues started to come in. This sort of strict Wahabi behaviour was necessary in the harsh desert conditions over there. So I don't think it's destroying lives. If the Saudis are happy to live this way - good for them. Most are content and the reality of Saudi Arabia is not as bad as the movies and these sensationalistic reports make it out to be.

Exporting terrorism - bad. What they do internally (as has been the case until now) is their problem.

Ok then the same could be asked of why we should respect your belief to hate all religion? Double-edged sword.
 
Well if they were brain dead bass thumping morons then I'd say they got off lightly.
