Johannesburg - ANC Youth League president Julius Malema made a quiet entrance ahead of his hearing in the Johannesburg Equality Court on Thursday.

With the room already packed with reporters, he walked in, sat down and began chatting to his lawyer.

Outside protesters waved placards urging: "ANC, we count on you to uphold the Constitution".

Gender advocacy group Sonke Gender Justice had laid a complaint alleging that Malema had undermined women's dignity with his comments.

In January this year, Malema reportedly told students at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology that President Jacob Zuma's rape accuser would not have stayed for breakfast if she had not enjoyed the sex.

"Those who had a nice time will wait until the sun comes out, request breakfast and ask for taxi money. In the morning, that lady requested breakfast and taxi money," Malema reportedly said.

Zuma was acquitted of the rape charge in May 2006.

Sonke would argue before the court that the statement perpetuated rape myths and stereotypes.

These had an effect of perpetuating sick acts of sexual violence against women and the under-reporting of sexual violence, Sonke believed.

Some of the other posters read, "No jokes about rape victims" and "Real men don't abuse women".

Zuma is a bag of sunshine compared to this clown. Malema is the most dangerous type of political figure - a self-absorbed, militant activist with the intellect of a small aquatic mollusk.
 
Julius Malema is just used by the ANC to say things that wouldn't be PC for the more senior leaders to say, so if Malema says it, it's like the senior leadership is saying it - scary
 
Don't know if I necessarily agree. Malema has been very publicly pulled back in line by the senior members of the ANC on a few occasions. He runs off his mouth before thinking (not sure he can? FF in woodwork, was it? :D ) and gets into hot water for it.

You may well be right, but I don't think its a foregone conclusion.
 
The senior leadership only "called him to order" after the public outcry over his statements, a sort of " right thing to do", but by then the comments had been made and were out there.

I don't think Malema understands his role ( not the sharpest saw in the woodwork shop ) and therefore he overestimates his power and made the statements against Naledi Pandor - for that he was immediately rebuked
 
This is just another feminist activist group taking him to court over something he said. Free publicity for them. :rolleyes:

No the guy is an idiot of note, but now this little activist group is highly offended because of his remarks that Zuma's 'rape victim' must have had a pretty good time because she stayed there for so long and asked for taxi fare. Whatever.

It's only "Whatever" if Malema is the only one who thinks like Malema.

But he's a man of the people and when he talks, you hear what a lot of normal South Africans are saying. (Shocking, isn't it?) For what it's worth - if he gets shot down, a lot of other people will get shot down with him.

Not saying it will change very much right now, but it's a start.

Malema is a fool who generally spews garbage, but what he said about Zuma's accuser is not all that far-fetched. Taking him to court about that...:erm: what's the point?

You know that your new puppy is going to piss on the carpet, even after you rub his nose in it. BUT, in time he will learn, yes sure your puppy is cleverer and will learn faster, but we can hope as well.

Yeah Grayston...:rolleyes: That girl was there for a long time and even asked taxi fare...only to cry RAPE later? This is probably the ONLY thing I agree with Malema, there is not one other thing he has ever said that I know about that I agree with. Come on.
