22 People commits suicide daily in SA

Recent statistics revealed that more than 22 people commit suicide in South Africa daily, and an additional 220 people fail in their suicide attempts. The rising costs of anti-depressant medication in most likelyhood fueled this increase in suicide attempts.

This is so so sad.

All those stats tell me is that If only 22 people out of 220 can perform a very simple job successfully, the average IQ here must be even lower than I estimated. And that I might add was extremely low. I can understand why they would want to do this (seeing what this country has come to) but darn! can't you even get this right?

Sorry.. what.... wtf does the increased cost of anti-depressants have to do with this stat, and its only a small footnote in the article itself...

The article is more about ppl commiting suicide due to the economic situation the WHOLE world is in......

I think the additional 220 people are idiots for not getting it right the first time.

Depression drives most suicides. Anti-depressants corrects the neurological chemical imbalance, usually caused by trauma. If a seriously depressed person does not take anti-depressants he could very likely be driven to suicide. Most clinically depressed people do not have access to anti-depressants due to their associated inflated costs. This directly influences the suicide statistics.

Ok... yes no ***** sherlock.... we all know this basic fact...

But its not the COST of the drugs that is necessarily the largest driver of this increase in the suicide rate..

If anything actually our suicide rate has gone down if the news24 figures are to be believed.

We used to sit at 48 daily according to this Sunday Tribune article from 2004 - http://www.sundaytribune.co.za/index.php?fArticleId=2094551

But is it not the economic situation that is causing the depression in the first place ?

The economic situation causes the trauma that leads to depression that leads to suicide. Anti-depressants can make someone undepressed, thus that person will not commit suicide. Now if someone can not get anti-depressants, propably because he/she can't afford it, then that person is more likely to kill him/herself.
I never said that it's the cost of anti-depressants that causes the depression in the first place.

Tara hands out medicines for free. So the increase in cost is a poor excuse. I'm sure clinics would also have access to anti-depressants.

22/220? Just shows that most suicide attempts are just people seeking attention.

Killing yourself sounds easy in principle, but it's actually quite difficult in practice. The instinct for self-preservation is a very strong one, even if you consciously want to die.

Why do you think "assisted" suicide is a point of political contention in some places?

But yeah... There is a bit of a blurry line between "self-harm" and genuine suicide attempts. Of course if one does survive the ordeal, and then decides it was a bad idea, it may behove that person to fool themselves, and those around them, into believing it wasn't a genuine suicide attempt to begin with.

Just going to quote your OP.... I'm being semantic here, but the below quote seems like you're saying the rising costs is a primary cause in the rise in the suicide rate, and you're just ignoring all the other new socio-economic reasons that could cause this...

The rising costs of anti-depressant medication in most likelyhood fueled this increase in suicide attempts.

Don't agree.Fear is imo the strongest emotion, the fear to fail, the fear to be humiliated...
There is nothing that motivate one more than fear.It is not about wanting to die(nobody wants to die) but the fear to face your problem that's stronger and makes you see suicide as a solution. For them its like choosing between the electric chair and the gas chamber, either way How people handle their problems differ and also the size of the problem varies.

For example,a guy that grew up broke, made some millions and lose it overnight, will handle it better than the oak that grew up in wealth. The thought of being broke is frightning because you were never been there. It's harder for you to deal with it.

Yes. It did fuel the suicide attempts. I'm not saying it's the reason WHY that person tried to kill him/herself. With anti-depressants they wouldnt have tried to kill themselves in the first place. But were just splitting genital hairs now.

Suicide is not easy though, takes a lot of courage if you don't have the right tools.

There is no way that suicide and courage fit together.

It takes courage NOT to commit suicide, to commit suicide is anything but courageous.

Of course, on the other hand, they could have a reaction to the anti-depressants and the anti-depressants could be the thing that drives them over the edge.

This is why many of the anti-depressants on the market today have been forced to warn potential customers that there is indeed a risk of becoming suicidal *because* of the drugs. The disgusting thing is that the pharmaceutical companies *knew* about these risks before they ever released the product, but tried very very hard to keep it under wraps.

My point is that you can't simply give people who are depressed happy pills and expect the world to become a better place. There simply isn't a magic pill for people who are sad.
