I have that same issue: http://www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=17457&highlight=delivery+reports

Many sms's come through late. Concatenated SMS's come through at odd times - this morning i received the 2nd part of a message and then this afternoon the first part.

MTN is a ripoff when it comes to SMSing.. check here tho if this may help:

I never really liked MTN
Everything of theirs is just a little bit more expensive

I've never had a problem with MTN. It's an individual thing. You can't blanket a company and say "oh MTN is *****" unless it's Melkom you are refering to.

I know they charge for contract users. Not too sure about pay as you go. Pretty sure pay as you go has free delivery reports...

The only reason I would change over to Vodacom is for the delivery report reason and cos my contract only charges per second after the first minute, which the consultant at the MTNSP shop conveniently never told me about..

I tested this near the end of last year with a prepaid MTN sim I still had. Delivery reports was definetly charged for.

i just dialled 808 and spoke to Naomi.

She confirmed that delivery reports are being charged for on pre-paid. Not contract.

I asked why she said she does not know, she can only answer for contract.

This is a ripoff indeed.

Do Vodacom and Cell C have the same practice ?

They have always stated that delivery reports are charged for, however on pay as u go they diddnt actualy ever charge you untill about a year or two ago...

Oh and MTN SP has to be the crappest service provier around, other SP's like nashua and the likes are probably a lot better. I still belive that MTN as a network are very good.

Er... I've been an MTN user since 1999. I know they charge delivery reports for pre-paid people. I know FOR A FACT they don't charge contract users for delivery reports.

Why do I know that? Because I send a ****load of smses out and receive delivery reports. My cousin has mtn prepaid, and they charge him for delivery reports.

So, that is why I sent Mad an email stating that contract users does NOT get charged for delivery reports, only PREPAID users does

I've been with them since 1999 (started on prepaid) they charged for delivery reports back then on prepaid as well

Er... I've been an MTN user since 1999. I know they charge delivery reports for pre-paid people. I know FOR A FACT they don't charge contract users for delivery reports.

I specifically asked a friend of mine because I am no longer with MTN and contract subscribers are NOT charged for SMS delivery reports.

Although MyChoice packages are offered through a contract - the underlying implementation on the network is prepaid so it is possible that these contract subscribers ARE being charged for delivery reports.

19-03-2005, 06:32 PM
Well, I signed up for the the cheapest contract several years ago, then it changed to some or other thingy, and last year I upgraded to Procall 300. I have a 500 sms bucket, "free" smses for 500 of them and then 23cents (If Im not mistaken) afterwards. I never hit 500 smses a month and I send alot. Around 400 a month.

This makes MTN the cheapest in smses. I should know, we wrote an sms profiler for a company and went live last monday (basically it assesses the company's customer base, and when a product is on special, decides who to sms)

Vodacom and CellC charges a few cents more, even if you buy in bulk. So those few cents more could explain how they're able to afford not charging for delivery reports?

They've been consitant in their service to me. And cheap. However, I feel for the prepaid subscribers. On all the networks.

Vodacom is able to pay almost 9 rand per 29 rand voucher sold IN COMMISSION to the people who resell it.

I've seen a privately owned business (who sells prepaid and sims on the side) make around R150000 per month in income, and they can stop selling sim cards if they wanted to, cause that 150k would be there every month because of people recharging.

I've seen someone recharge almost 5000 rand in 1 month.

hey noone, i'm looking at doing some smsing for my company aswell, few thousand and all , every now and then, where did you go to set that up?

AcidRaZor
24-03-2005, 02:20 PM
well, the company that we wrote it for has ties with vodacom themselves, so they preferred everything to go through vodacom, which is nice because they have web services to do these things with.

you can contact cfourie@expertalliance.co.za if you need to discuss bulk smsing for your company, we're able to setup something that caters to your business and is customized to your needs.

hope this helps

Sorry guy you all have it all wrong MTN do not change for delivery reports. Only on MMS. Look at your hex code. If you are sending ring tones, logo, etc your message will more than likely be bigger that the 160 characters of a standard SMS that’s why you see multiple charges on your bill. MTN charge 19c per message using a SIM card. If you want an SMPP (Direct) connection call 1555 and ask for MTNs SMS Connect product. MTN is by far the cheapest GSM data carrier in South Africa( R10 for 10MB, R100 for 100MB and R499 for 1GB) so I suggest some of you make first had enquires and don’t ASSUME or go on what a second hand friend has told you.

Which is it?

Can somebody from MTN confirm which is which and what is what???

PS:

Dont worry about delivery reports. Last year while in Russia, I was sent a MMS from a friend of mine who was trying find me while I was out pub crawling and had the hotel keys in my back pocket. Something went wrong and over the next 3 weeks.. I received the SAME message more than 150 times.. I was charged for every one :( :(. Even after pointing it out, and proving that I was on the plane during the last 10 times it supposedly came through, I still had to pay! 11K phone bill .. Bad idea!

MTN charge 19c per message using a SIM card.
The only way to get 19c/sms is by getting a SMS contract from MTN. After that the cheapest option is 21c/sms with the SMS 2000 bundle.

Most MTN contracts don't have off-peak for sms either - same price all day

Hi. Please provide more details (by private mail is probably more effective) because it is certainly not our intention to charge people R11 000 for MMS's they did not receive!

I've been with MTN since I was in diapers, and I've never paid for a delivery report.

To the guy who said that MTN was a "ripoff" for SMSes... Get your facts straight!
A quick look at the website which YOU posted in defense of your ludicrous claim, revealed the opposite.

My 500 SMS bundle is R1.50 more expensive on MTN (whoa, that *IS* a rip), but out-of-bundle SMSes are charged at bundle rates, whereas with Vodacom, the SMSes are 35c. My usage is around 600 per month, so for ME (yes, I am using myself as a practical example) MTN is cheaper.

Looking at each network's largest SMS package, MTN comes in cheaper still. I don't understand how people can go to all the effort of posting without actually having a clue what they are talking about.

(yes, I am using myself as a practical example) MTN is cheaper.

And that is exactly how anyone should approach it ... using their own requirements and circumstances. Unfortunately, most people are too lazy to make the effort of working out what's best for themselves ... regardless of whether its their bank charges, telecoms, etc.

So, we/they make sweeping statements based on perceptions and because lots of the people listening are like that as well, fiction becomes fact as perception is reality for most of us...

Doubt whether one will ever solve this problem.

Ok guys here goes:

I dont work for MTN but this is what i can tell you - i may be wrong though!

This is all according to the MTN website. However regarding contracts, I can also, from, my experience say that:
MTN CONTRACT USERS: Donot pay for delivery reports.

MTN PREPAID USERS: HERE it gets confusing;
Firstly, i know that when i used a prepaid for my wife 2 years ago, one of the PrePaid Price plans charged a delivery report - NOT ALL the price plans - I read it on the website and was shocked so changed to the other Price Plan. As far as I remember it was the CALL PER SECOND Price Plan that charged you for delivery reports.
Do they still charge?
According to the rates on the website: NO

EXperience: I cannot say NOW as I am no longer using a PREPAID....Someone using a prepaid will have to tell us...
Here is what the website has - it says nothing about delivery reports like it used to say 2 years ago....so if you still being charged > you being robbed ....but i doubt MTN will be charging something when its not in their published rates...

CLASSIC PREPAID PRICE PLAN:
PEAK : 86c
Off PEAK 86c

CALL PER SECOND PREPAID PLAN:
PEAK: 86c
Off PEAK: 35c

PAYBACK PREPAID PLAN:
PEAK and OffPEAK:
1st SMS of the day R 0.86
2nd SMS of the day R 0.60
3rd or more SMS of the day R 0.40

MTNBB will have to tell us whats the situation

AND WHILE WE AT IT: MTN BB ....im not going to let u forget, wherever i post, that WE are still waiting for SWEET SPOTS.......the promised changes to the GPRS bundles.....

Curious, I have had a similar problem before, regarding sms...
It would appear when I traced the cause, it had to do with the roaming operator's VLR...
That was a situation involving my MTNSA sim, roaming on MTNNG.

On the issue of delivery reports, it is a pretty clear explanation, and it has to do with interconnect and traffic utilisation.
A delivery report still uses "bandwidth/resources" (simplified description) and this costs money... MTN has to recover this.

Just did a test on my MTN prepaid sim with call per second price plan.
My account balance was R45.79 before sending an sms. I enabled delivery reports and sent an sms to my Vodacom number. After I got the delivery report my balance was R45.09. Then I disabled delivery reports and sent another message to my Vodacom number. Now the balance was R44.74.

Also sent an sms with delivery reports enabled to another MTN number. The balance afterwards was R44.04

So MTN do charge for delivery reports even to their own network on pre-paid with the call per second price plan. The other networks on their per second price plans don't.

This is the main reason when people ask me what network to use for prepaid I say don't use MTN. MTN, I think it's time you guys wake up, this greed is costing you in the long run.

A final note, I am not anti-MTN totally, they are releasing pre-paid data bundles on Monday, the first network to do this. So well done for that.

VERY necessary...many examples...one will suffice
Example: You sms your friend...." im leaving in ten min...better get here quickly" and his phone is switched off! If you have delivery reports you atleast know that he has not picked up the message..

Then, if what u say is true, MTN are CROOKS - unless ofcourse they have some very small print wherein they state that they do charge for the reports -& Even if there is small print they can be taken to the consumer council as they are charging for something without clearly mentioning it

MTNBB : you better update your website and put it up nice and clear, the way it was 2 years ago ( if u are charging & it seems u are!) before someone sues MTN !!!
I didnt think MTN will do daylight robbery.....
im disappointed

mm, i'm also looking for it...

Why do MTN still only have 'off-peak' SMS's available on the Call per second price plan, every other network has chepaer SMS rates, off-peak SMS rates on all packages, and free delivery reports!! The new Data and SMS bundles are nice, but something thats also bugging me is weather ur in-bundle sms's deplete faster if delivery reports are active??

ajax
07-11-2005, 06:54 AM
I'd like someone else to confirm this please. My MTN pre-paid simcard is on the new call per second plus price plan. (To check your price plan, dial *141#). The website states that you do not get charged for delivery reports. Well I just I did a test. I sent a short sms to my vodacom number from an old Nokia 6150. Delivery reports was enabled in message settings. My account reflected a deduction of R1.10 after sending the sms and getting the delivery report. Then I disabled delivery reports in message settings and sent the same SMS again to the same number. This time the deduction was 65c. So I got charged 45c for the delivery report!

From MTN's website http://www.mtn.co.za/?pid=242519
"MTN is bringing it down with the kickin’ new Call Per Second Plus plan. Call Per Second Plus gets you cheaper peak time call rates, cheaper SMS rates during peak and off-peak times, free SMS delivery receipts and ridiculously low MMS rates."

So, is MTN is lying? Or am I missing something??

If MTN were to send automatic acknowledgments for all customers who wish, the system would not be able to cope and customers rightly complain about the time required to transmit messages. Vmobile & Glo can send delivery reports, as the volume of traffic they process is considerably less than MTN.

Explain your crap????

I work for a WASP and we receive a DLR for each and every msg we submit to MTN, well that is if the handset can acknowledge the MT.

Vodacoms network does not fall over with DLRs and even CellC handles it.
