A school has installed nearly 100 security cameras to monitor classrooms, corridors and play areas, it emerged yesterday.

The £60,000-a-year surveillance system at Stockwell Park High is believed to be the most extensive in a school.

Cameras also film lessons to help staff improve their technique and may be used to expose poor teaching.

The comprehensive intends to kit out every classroom with the technology because staff say it helps tackle truancy, indiscipline and false allegations against them.

Teachers' leaders last night warned against using the 'Big Brotherish' system.

Almost 100 schools have introduced similar in- class cameras while a quarter use some kind of CCTV, mainly for security reasons. But the average number of classrooms fitted with the technology is five, while Stockwell Park High, in South London, has two cameras in 28 classrooms - 56 in total.

In addition there are 40 cameras in corridors, stairwells and outdoor areas.

The school began by training CCTV cameras on its perimeter fences to deter intruders and then put them in classrooms to prevent damage to costly whiteboards.

Now it is taking advantage of major renovation work to install the hi-tech Classwatch system - which promises digital sound and images ' admissible in a court of law'.

It all begins when you take away discipline and accountability a.k.a. corporal punishment.

My old highschool is now also bristling with security cameras to keep an eye on these little *****s.
 
Deter intruders? COSTLY whiteboards but spend 60 000 pounds a year on a camera system?

The world has finally gone belly up. Screwed. Mental. Loony! And other British words. Where is Dr Strangelove when you need him?
 
I was a very naughty boy in grade 2. Once the school's deputy principle told me that there are thousands of microscopic cameras EVERYWHERE. In the classrooms, on the playground, in the hall... and that he was watching my every move so I better behave. I really believed it at the time. I even told the other kids "don't do that, the principle is watching". I was damn scared for a couple of days, until I conveniently forgot his words.
 
And now your child will grow up in the world you were terrified of. With some prat watching him all the time, to make sure he isn't disrupting the indoctrination process.
 
Quite in favour of this. UK kids are bullies seen it first hand, they even bully their own friends. Let the little cretons be monitored 24/7
 
And maybe picking your nose becomes illegal since you might be putting germs in your nose, leading to sickness and the tax payers paying your medical bills?
 
We are currently installing 46 cameras at a high school.

Every classroom has a camera and there are several covering the grounds.

It protects both the rights of pupils and teachers. The controlbody hopes this will cut down on vandalism and improve discipline.

The school is in a "middle class" suburb.

Total cost R250 000.:D

Tut Tut. Everything is recorded un-manned. Footage is only ever reviewed when their is an incident ;)

Edit: Unless you work in Oxford City. Those guys monitor traffic like Nazi's. Even dare venture into a bus lane and you're done for!

46 cameras - that's a lot of HDD and capture cards to record all of that and hopefully at some meaningful resolution.

My point is two-fold - one is that for practical reasons this won't protect kids - because if your kid is stabbed he'll be stabbed, the camera won't prevent that because 46 attentive guys aren't manning these screens and they won't be able to identify a dangerous situation before it explodes - unless there's 46 or some reasonable number of them.

Secondly that video footage will be wiped frequently - every 24-48hrs unless they have space and backup for TBs of data.

Yah i must agree in that unless CCTV is actually gonna help prevent a crime then its only half as effective. It'll take a whole team to man a camera system like this unfortunately, any other way might just be a waste of money but at least perportrators realise they will be identified and will think twice about committing the crime. They have CCTV on all buses in England and it goes a long way to preventing crime even if they images are only stored on a HDD on the bus for 24 hours

It's not as bad as you say... as being in the industry... I know its not that expensive
A simple DVR (digital recorder) has 16 or 32 channels.
Each DVR can be set up that it will record only once there's movement in front of any camera... saving HD space
A typical HD can be from 360mb to 500mb... record for up to 3 weeks... before the oldest footage gets erased

I personally believe we should do the same here... cause these focking kids are way out of hand
In my daughters school... the kids do what they like... until MALE teachers leave the classroom crying :eek: WTF !!

Bring back corporal punishment.. the only way... Save the child.. and not the rod :erm:

The headmaster has a monitor in his office and the receptionist one.

Thats what the client wanted so thats what they'll get.:D

I beg to differ! your stereotype is rather pathetic. For a person that is being stereotyped as 'white and benifited from apartheid', you really dont get the meaning and how much damage your sterreotypical assumption does. The youth are a product of their upbringing - Why not class those kids as the product of absolutely useless parents that should be shot?

I am in the UK and I can speak firsthand that my daughter (8yr old) was a victim of bullying... BY ANOTHER SA GIRL FROM THE EAST RAND!!!!!

So dont point out the UK kids are hoodies... they are in SA too. Dont try fool yourself and think its a unique problem to 'the other side of the pond'

Well if the parents can't bring up their kids to behave the State will have to resort to these measures. Of course we won't mention the state tying the parents hands behind their backs when it comes to disciplining their kids in the first place:erm:

Since when does it take one person to monitor one camera. At most you'd need only around 8 staff members for 46 cameras.

I don't think they want to spy on the kids... but only use it as playback... for evidence when trouble does occur
A good thing too for when the teacher needs to step out of the classroom... the kids will think twice

No one needs to monitor it at all... if this is the case ;)

I dunno, how many times has a video camera prevented a crime?

Sure sometimes they can catch the perpetrator, but in a school with a limited number of people a crack or TIK head will slit your throat regardless OR he'll do it after school or in the changing room. Which gets me thinking, when will the scandal surface that there are also changing room cams and that the guards are perving off high school kids changing?
