"WUG Club" to supply international access

Please can someone give an explanation of how this scenario could be achieved...It must be possible.

Cannot. Wugs operate without an license, and as such cannot provide internet access.

Wugs don't want to go commercial because if you wanted wireless internet get a wisp. They exist, so use them. The moment Wugs charge a monthly fee for their service then you run into lots of problems, one main problem is service.

At the moment the Wugs are run by people in their spare time. If a high site goes down someone takes their own time to go fix it. The moment the Wug becomes a paid service then someone HAS to go fix it, even if it is 3 in the morning.

I realistically don't see the Wugs going in this direction.
 
Jawug has just started charging a membership fee... Not to make someone to go fix it at 3 in the morning though, just to cover costs on highsites etc.
 
Also I read that they were linking up with TENET and I know that TENET are getting a stake in SEACOM.

Looks interesting !
 
I don't know about the international access thing... Not afaik.

Peering with TENET would be very interesting but no Internet would be provided via WUG.

Simply getting access to their repositories is already great seeing that they have a local mirror of ubuntu repo's and other good freeware like firefox, etc.

Interesting times in the making.
 
Well I think one of the main objectives of WUGs is to create a self-contained 'intranet' not a gateway or interface to a larger network such as the internet. Our peering agreements are just that, peering agreements. Only other parties that are part of the agreement and adhere to its' terms would be connected.

It is a matter of semantics really. TENET functions as a proxy server, they download one thousand Bach Youtube videos and cache in on the WUG server. You click on your firefox browser and the instead of re-downloading the cached version comes up.

All the WUGS need to go legit is to be under the license of a Vansie then Icasa won't take the gear just like Icasa don't take the gear of Vansie IS who had to explain the other day to Icasa why they are using non-type approved equipment.. So all this nonsense about the WUGS not providing Internet vanished once they reached economies of scale and a VAnsie license holder showed some bucks. Money talks,......:) The Vansie license holder will send out a paid employee at 3.am to go an fix a highsite, just like not everybody fixes their own cars....... only can wonder why this has take so long.

I think that it is important to remember that when you link to another network (called peering) that does not necessarily give you access to the internet access that they have. JAWUG is considering the possibility of free peering which would allow the members of JAWUG and users at the peering partner to access services on each others networks. We already have a similar arrangement with PTAWUG.

We will never have global internet access on the wugs for a number of reasons:
Internet transit is extremely expensive and despite what people may think - we would not be able to do it significantly cheaper than the ISPs. We are also an NPO and have no interest in competing with commercial operators as this would change the way that we are licensed and add additional costs.
The JAWUG network is improving all the time but the overall uptime on the network is well below acceptable market levels for a provider network and we would be required by ICASA to achieve certain uptime levels if we sold commercial internet access. Unfortunately certain parts of the network have been at less than 50% uptime and this is not acceptable for anything other than an experimental network :)
 
*sigh*....it would be more entertaining to read our good friend Captain_Scifi's text if it wasn't so directly intended to accuse of becoming a WISP.

As the rest of the people posted on the thread after the good captain's post, we are not intending to supply international internet access, and we won't have some magical content delivery via TENET or something. We will only have access to what is described in our peering agreements with whichever network we peer with, and not more than that.
 
First rule of "Wug Club" is no captainscifi, and no wisps!! :D
 
What does the arrangement between Jawug, PtaWUG and PWP include? Does this mean PtaWUG members have complete or partial access to Jawug's filesharing,etc.?

JAWUG and PTAWUG are BGP Peering. This means that the JAWUG routers tell the PTAWUG routers what IPs are being used on the network and visa versa. Virtually any IP on either network can reach any IP on both of the networks. :D
