My dad used MS (sniff) Outlook for email, connected by 802.11g to the home network - on certain email addresses, notably those @mweb.co.za, the emails bounce, saying Relay Access Denied? He is using smtp.wbs.co.za definitely.

This is a recurring issue. Any ideas?

Give him a Gmail account. Want an invite? Send me a private mail...

that hardly solves the issue if he wants to have pop3 email and integrate his email with his business needs.

sorry for my lack of clarification - a waste of bandwidth perhaps.

1. I have a gmail account. And I use it. My dad can hardly change his email address - he gets like 80 a day.

2. My Dad's email address is [email protected], ISP is Tiscali/Mweb. His standard dialup smtp server is smtp.saix.net.

3. As Far as I know, smtp.wbs.co.za does not require authentication at all - netiher for smtp.saix.net or any others that I have ever used. I think that it only authenticates you if you are on the same local loop as the mail server.

thanks for your replies.

True. Moral of the story is that the actual need also needs to be looked at, not just the technical fix, whatever that may be. Sometimes it's best to use problem avoidance instead of problem resolution, as many a happy user will attest to...

i have absolutley no clue what you're on about, i think we can all agree that DaveBuchanan1337's problem would be solved by using the mweb smtp server to send mweb mail as adlo said

Certain SMTP servers require POP activity before being able to send mail.. 'safety' they say.. click Receive All and then do the normal Send/Receive thing and see if that works..

Certain SMTP servers disallow SMTP connections from anyone not within their address blocks, but that has probably got nothing to do with this guy's problem.

Pointing his mail client at smtp.mweb.co.za might work, if mweb don't do the above.

wbs do not relay for foreign domains... not sure if they support SPA, but if they do, you will have to use SPA to logon before you can send mail so that they know you are not a spammer. otherwise just use the mail server for the domain from which you are sending i.o.w if its an @mweb.co.za address, use a mweb smtp server.

It's very simple, really. Instead of all the technical options that have to be tried to identify and finally eliminate the problem, it's sometimes best to just avoid the issue and opt for another solution, if that alternative solution fulfils your needs. Hence, review the need as well, instead of just focussing on the technical issue. In this particular context, if DaveBuchanan1337's dad could usefully utilise a Gmail account via a browser-based front-end to fulfil his needs, that would solve the mailsend problem. However, as he has confirmed, he cannot, so this is all moot...

SEAN .. Please read ....

WBS needs to get their act into gear. Their SMTP server needs to be configured to accept all email for relay from any of their addresses used by the Iburst Subscribers.
The smtp server cannot be configured to realy any mail from [email protected] as none of us have a pop account yet.

Gmail is a way to get arroudn the issues , but not the solution.
Sean , get the people to please configure the smtp server properly.

erf, just a quick once over from my side, didn't read much... but make sure you authenticate with the server first. Some servers disallow any connection that is not authenticated by your username and password (like mine :D )

445 means you are not authorised to send via that server. So if he is on dialup he should use smtp.saix.net (which only cares about the senders IP address, i.e. it must be a saix IP, it does not care about what the email address being used is). If he is dialing up on Mweb/Tiscali/Icon he should be using smtp.mweb.co.za
If he is on iBurst then he should use smtp.wbs.co.za

are you in advertising? you are aren't you? ok well I don't know what kind of 'think outside the box' cleches they have be filling your head with at conferences but gmail has nothing to do with this thread. he was trying to send mweb mail through the wbs server, which isn't allowed so all he had to do was use the mweb smtp server for mweb mail. Theres nothing technical about it, use mweb servers for mweb mail. As for gmail, you might think its the greatest thing on earth but some people dont like thier mail being looked at or would opt for a pop 3 account so they dont have to have http access to check thier mail (which some businesses block)

This tirade is not really worth the bother of a response, except to say that if you go through life with blinkers on, you will never see the woods for the trees. A single-minded approach to anything does not improve the quality of the result, evidenced most clearly in the quality of your post. Your analysis of DaveBuchanan1337's original posting is also faulty - he asked for ideas. And no, I'm not in advertising...

mbs - i have to agree with slimothy here. dave's original post was to the effect that he couldnt relay mail. he wanted ideas as to why he couldnt relay mail. he was told why and given the technical solution. if he follows the instructions, his problem will go away. anyway, nuff said. lets end his now.

Agreed. As I've already said, it's all moot, anyway, given Dave's subsequent clarification - you will note that my suggestion was posted BEFORE such clarification. And as noted subsequently by Gary, WBS need to configure their servers for appropriate relaying as necessary, including validation of mail accounts. And that includes advising their users of the need for smtp authentication or not. Also, as TheRodent pointed out, the use of the MWeb smtp server may be constrained by IP range - all of this needs to be checked out.
For the life of me, I can't figure out exactly what it is that's upset the anally retentive - one would think that proposing an alternative solution, even though not ideal, would actually be a good thing! Ah well... 'nuff said already.

I just hope because of Shaun's "will look into it" they don't open the whole smtp server for another spam relay. It's only the authentication to the server that is nessacary (where you setup your physical account in outlook or wherever)

It's not a problem with the server itself and I hope they don't drop the security because of this request.
