View Full Version : UUNet: Whats going on?

Great so I've finaly got my copy of WoW right after UUNET have upgraded their lines and I was getting a great ping (600-800) for 1 whole day!
As from yesterday (22/03/2005) its been crap! Last time I checked I was getting 5000 to WoW servers, but when I ping google I get 400 with alot of timeouts. I got this account for playing WoW and now I cant do that which means this account is useless to me.
Is UUNET overdoing it again? I think so, ever since the 'upgrade' the line has been degrading again. No wonder Mweb left them!

I have realized this morning, their is a problem again with UUNET. Its incredible slow... I will enquire this morning and keep you informed.

Thanks Celemasiko, I truelly believed in this service and I am now very dissapointed. I'm hoping UUNet will pull through, not because of the uncapped, but the unshaped gaming ports. Even if there was a 30gig cap I'd still be using this service.

UUNET is in the process of upgrading again. Thats the reason...
RoosTa
24-03-2005, 01:04 PM
Thanks for that Celemasiko, I'd just wish they'd keep their customers informed. After the last upgrade things went well. Any idea when this upgrade will be finished? I have 3 days left to decide if I want to keep this service.

Ping times weren't great for me on WoW either last night (capped account). Usually average btw 500 - 650. Last night it was hovering btw 900 - 1400  .
I think it was a general slowdown. Everybody's trying to cap out their monthly limit.

What would you guys say if I could guarantee a ping between 300 - 600ms ?

It's a online game. There's one called Guild Wars due for release soon which is the same concept but will have no subs. :)

Yes please. How do I do that?
bobs_uncle
31-03-2005, 01:14 PM
FireFli, you need to download OpenVPN 2 from www.openvpn.org
Then email me (doug@nebular.za.net) and I'll send you a test account.
I'm keen to see what the pings will be like.
Just for a test, do a ping to adsl-gate.nebular.za.net and post the average here. Do about 10 pings...

In-game latency are very different from ICMP. So best is if someone makes screenshots from in-game (mouse-over the 3 bars(usually red),to the right of the red question mark) and makes sure there are no packet losses. (Other players turning in circles or a very long typing delay or NPC(mob) characters 'jumping' around)
They would need to test it for a few hours at least, since I sometimes get a false(green) latency reading for the first few minutes after joining the game.
PS bobs_uncle, check your email ;)
FireFLi
31-03-2005, 02:04 PM
I know about the latency bar, mine is usually green for 10 seconds or so, always live in hope. How do u check the packet loss? Also find that sometimes when a bucket load of Horde raid I get kicked out the game :(.
RoosTa
31-03-2005, 02:14 PM
Packet loss is usually the big problem, much more than the latency. Lets say you are attacking a creature and suddenly your spell 'hangs' as if you've entered bullet-time. You can still walk around but everything around your is 'paused'. Thats caused by packet-loss. Sometimes other really strange things happen such as Player Characters turning around in circles in one spot or they warp or teleport all over the show. After a huge packet loss, usually the game tries to play 'catch up' and everything thereafter happens at ultra speed. And thats why sometimes it seems you suddenly just drop dead, even though the character you were fighting was a level 1 critter.
Latency is the responsiveness of the game, eg. It is the time it takes for you to sell something and receiving your cash. Or the time it takes from hitting the spell button to actually casting the spell. Luckily for Massive Multiplayer Online Games (MMOG), latency is not that essential because its not about lightning reflexes (Quake 3/ UT2004).

Maybe generally, but when your raiding a horde camp and next thing you get sheeped and you have had no chance to respond  it can get quite fustrating.
I experienced the running in circles thing in an instance server, so close to the end and the server fell over . And the casting thing when you get large horde raids.
What connection are you using?

ADSL Shaped.
I've never been sheeped before, since I've never been part of a raid. The only thing that I know of that needs a good response would be fishing. fishing can be frustrating on shaped ADSL.
Last night I was getting really bad lag (caused by packet loss), yet my friend on ISDN was fine. But it was nothing in comparison to UUNET where a ping to google.com was 300-400, but the game was almost unplayable and very frustrating.
If bob's service can provide fast (250ms-450ms), reliable (no packet loss) and stable (no spiking) pings to WoW, I'd be very interested!

LaRoosTa,
Let me get the VPN service fixed. But I'm very sure I'll be able to supply it. All I'm worried about is the adsl -> adsl connection. (the cnnection between you and my VPN server).
But lets see...
wamatt
31-03-2005, 05:57 PM
Just to confirm its not shaped. But at the moment there is packet loss on international, this will result in a lower average ping for WoW players.
We are assisting UUNet as much as possible to get this resolved for our users.
FireFLi
31-03-2005, 06:08 PM
Let me understand this correctly. The UUNet service is not shaped and are trying to get packet loss down i.e. WoW ping times up?

Something that most if not all WOW players dont understand. Yes 0% loss is attainable but 450ms MAX ping is not. Alot if not most of the time the servers would be to crowded and a 450ms just isnt possible, a realistic all the time avg would be 700-800ms which is attainable except if the server load is so high and in the few situations push the ping over a 1000ms. All this is still perfectly playable without loss.
killadoob
06-04-2005, 08:40 AM
wow 1000ms ping is very high
would you get those high pings with adsl?
well other adsl than uunet

killadoob like insulting uunet because he is on AYCE...
What is interesting though, he is insulting the wrong company, but to start with, you should not insult companies as they are doing something which you are not...you are however allowed to give your opinion on a company;s service, but when it gets to the level where you insult them non-stop, you are just acting childish.
Deliver a service like uunet do, tell me if its easy/difficult, and if you can do better, Ill be impressed by what you say, but right now you are just disgusting me...

Agh - your wasting your breath (or fingertips?) - as they say ignorance is bliss and he does seem very very happy.
My UUnet is shaping up nicely - good pings, decent download speeds, skype is uploading and downloading files rapidly and the voice is much better. If telkom offers me the 1meg line I'll be laughing - esp at those with the paltry 30gb caps.

well yes during the day you will get those pings because everyone is online. are you not aware that more ppl use adsl during the day than at night (and im ignorant?
and the reason im anti uunet is because since i have seen ayce open even before i signed you guys have done nothing but talk sh%t about them so all i do is talk sh^t about uunet.
i do this because as with me i dont know uunet service or whether it is any good, but on that note you dont know if ayce's service is any good but yet you still go on and on about how bad they are.
your gonna have a 1mbit line and no p2p lmao what you gonna use your 1mbit to download?
and im here and your gonna have to live with me but untill you stop attacking ayce i wont stop attacking uunet
do you guys have a usage meter at uunet?
why not copy me some guys that have downloaded over 30 gig this month so far?

“Definitions of internet troll on the Web:
An Internet troll is either a person who sends messages on the Internet hoping to entice other users in to angry or fruitless responses, or a message sent by such a person. The term derives from the phrase "trolling for newbies" and ultimately from trolling for fish; it first appeared on Usenet. The term is frequently abused to slander opponents in heated debates and is frequently misapplied to those who are ignorant of etiquette. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll)

I only started with UUnet at the beginning of the month and I have to admit that in the beginning I had some doubt whether or not I had gone the right route for me. However, speeds have since picked up in pretty much every area. There is still some room for improvement but I’m happy for now.

they willl upgrade according to my reseller this morning...
Not intening to be obtuse but do you mean they're doing the upgrading this morning or that you learnt this morning about a upgrade to be done at some yet-to-be-determined time? Either way improvements to any service are always welcomed here :o
Chris

Well, they've been upgrading for the last month - I'm primarily going to use this for gaming but I'm willing to give them a chance.
At least the local pings look quite good.
