I'm sure there's thousands of people in my situation:
I signed up for a Telkom 1GB Broadband Contract @ R199-00 about a year ago.
I received a Billion 800VGT modem (which is one of the better ones, as it has VOIP). Now I'm having a change of heart, thinking that it's not worth my while since it does not allow me mobility and restricts me to using the line only at my house. Alternatively I am considering a Vodacom 500MB Contract @ R159-00, which is not that cheap but allows alot more flexibility. Telkom reckons that to "buy myself" out of the contract I would have to pay 50% of the cost of the router which they "claim" was R1300 in Oct last year. Which means I have to pay R650-00 to get out of this deal.

my choices:

1. I stay with my existing contract till it runs out then move over
(only in Oct 2010)

2. I buy myself out of this deal and pay the R650

your opinion, what other choices do I have?
 
well its really upto you

You can wait 14 months for 1GB without mobility or

pay the R650 and 20% less per month for 50% less data, with mobility.

Its dependent on how much data you use, and how impirtant the mobility is to you. The price shouldn't really be a deciding factor.
 
Not trying to be funny, but why on earth did you signup for a contract in the first place?
 
Is this an ADSL account or 3G account? I think this will probably need to go under the ADSL thread.
 
R199 for 1GB - can only be ADSL.

mod - please move to ADSL thread?
 
1. Is the R199 including line rental etc? I.e. total, no hidden, final cost?
2. Is it only available with a contract or can you do month-to-month?

Thinking of recommending this to the folks, as they use 500mb VC so R40 more for double the cap sounds reasonable.
 
... I can actually drag my neotel device to work and back - uncapped wherever I go... but heck, the thing is too big to lug around

answer:
1. R199 is the ADSL cost, additional cost if Telkom line rental of approx R140-ish
2. it is only available on month to month if the modem is paid up
