I agree totally with downloads leading to sales. I know for a fact that Linkin Park sold three more CDs than they would have as a result of me downloading "minutes to midnight"...

I for one am happy not to be using IS.

When Breaking Benjamin's Phobia cd came out, i liked "The Diary of Jane" alot, downloaded the cd, and now, i've went out and bought their first 3 cd's [including Phobia - limited edition :p], and pre-ordered their next one... Dear Agony....

these guys should be happy we download their songs, sometimes we'll buy more of their cds, and then there is word of mouth, or friends hearing these songs...
 
For everyone 1 person who downloads an album then buys it there are probably more that download an album and don't.

....and as clearly stated in the article, they would in likelihood never have purchased the CD anyway, downloads or not. Some people buy CDs, others don't. You are never going to covert those who don't so the music industry is not losing anything.

That can be true. But one can also say for every person that buys a CD there are thousands that don't and also don't download! :D

haha.... i may have extra bit of resentment for them [Nicholas Louw included] since my parents drove me nuts with them, and i'm a bit more into rock/metal/alternative... not nice!

i just hate the fact that it sounds like all these bloody afrikaans artist are using the same bloody backtrack, OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER again...

do they take a backtrack, and a few randoms... slap some words together, and bamn.... pot of gold!?
 
How do we know its IS thats doing the snooping to me based on what I have seen. It appears as if they acting on an abuse query from some company sent in on behalf of some or other major studio in the States.
 
I think snooping is the wrong word to use here as IMO, IS' actions aren't based on identifying what a particular user is downloading, but rather from the template e-mails sent out by media watchdog companies which they're required to forward on to the end user.

The people doing the snooping are the watchdog companies and agents who represent the given movies and music. These guys are seeding fake torrents and are waiting to catch all the peers who download the torrents (honeypot). - see http://torrentfreak.com/how-to-find-fake-torrents-uploaded-by-the-mpaa-and-riaa/

@ bitstream and zamrg wrt whether snooping is the right term.

I assume IS would not blindly irritate their customers without checking whether the complaints (if any) received were indeed valid. Blindly forwarding such complaints on supposedly fake torrents at that, boils down to spam... Is IS actually randomly spamming its own customers with foreign bot generated complaints? :eek:

Oh and for the record I am not anti-IS at all. I think it is a largely respectable company. :) I am just a little irritated with this event.

Your gripe is centered around them snooping your traffic are they or are they not?

I suppose one could consider it a form of spam if these reports are falsely generated and are blindly passed on by the ISP. I received one of these e-mails from MWEB a couple years ago and the e-mail was cc'd with a special ticket number to one of the media watchdog companies. This is how the watchdogs actually check that the e-mail has been passed on and at the same time, it's a way for the forwarding ISP to verify the authenticity of the request. I don't know if it still works like this or if all the watchdogs have a online ticketing system.

I may be corrected here, but all this discussion originated from that one user receiving one of these e-mails recently. I also recall him confirming that he did download the copyrighted content and that the details in the e-mail were correct down to the time the torrent was downloaded and the ip the connection was made from. We can therefore assume that the e-mail was authentic, it came from a watchdog company, the ISP acted accordingly in passing on the e-mail and it should therefore NOT be considered as spam.
 
hmmm, either my viewing tastes must be very strange or I am somehow flying under the radar cos I have yet to receive any kind of warning from anybody. I don't use any anonymizer tools yet... but I will start doing so now.
