Zuma weighs in on race row

Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma said a debate on race would take the country backwards, calling instead for a deeper understanding of non-racialism in South Africa, according to a report in the Star on Friday.

"We have never looked at things in terms of race and ethnicity but, rather, in terms of people being South Africans," Zuma said.

He was responding to a question about ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema's recent criticism of the racial make-up of Zuma's Cabinet.

Malema had questioned why blacks had been overlooked for key economic portfolios.

Zuma defended Malema, saying he was "young and still learning" and had a right to raise issues.

Political education

Zuma said he would argue against a suggestion by the ANC's national executive committee (NEC) that the party start a debate on race and transformation.

NEC member Lindiwe Sisulu made the call after Malema said on radio SAFM that there would be an uprising if the issue of black people's access to economic levers of power was not "handled properly".

He said political education on what non-racialism meant was needed.

"The fact of the matter is the ANC does not look at things from a race point of view," Zuma said.

"We are a non-racial organisation."

Race and ethnicity

He continued: "It cannot be a crucial thing for the ANC to begin to look at race and ethnicity, because you are dealing with colleagues, with comrades, who have sacrificed and who were there (during the struggle against apartheid).

"There is a need for a greater understanding of the policy of the ANC - a policy we championed when apartheid was killing people.

"We never looked at things in terms of race and ethnicity, but (rather) in terms of non-racialism, as South Africans. But young people have a right to raise these things."

He said if people start saying "let's talk about race", they would be "moving backwards".

Rising issues about race does not make malema a racist. Its like saying that when white people rise issues like "affirmative action benefits only black" makes them racists.

And please do take not that JZ is saying that the ANC is a non-racial party. Even you yourself know that. If at all it was not, there wouldnt be any Indians, coloured and whites in the ANC.

In fact, I should be the one labeling the FF+ as racist because it does not have other races only whites, but I will not...for now...right now I still believe they are looking out for the wellbeing of Afrikanaars, guarding their culture and way of life so that it does not get swept away, atleast that is what they tell us. Eitherway I believe they are slowly changing their stance.

I have said it many times that AA is a policy which is meant to level the playing field between the different races. Do you really expect after apartheid for blacks to carry on as if no dicsriminstion held people back economically?
Why do you think whites dont live in shacks but in surbabs and other better occomodation?

Why do you think whites run the businesses of SA?

Why do you think blacks are the only one doing big time crimes like robbing malls, cash in transit heists and thefts?

Why do you think its mostly blacks that are toy toying to get better salaries?

Why do you think black matriculants under-perform so much at school?

If a white owned compnay applies for tender and it has a favourable proprtion of black employess, it will get the tender. So whites to do benefit from AA and BEE.

Never saw it work like that and I have sat on tender adjudications. It looks at the ownership of the company and not the employees. The reason why some white owned companies with 90% black employees never got the contracts.
 
Tell me was the zuma in power when BEE came in?

I like what he has said in all honesty, far better than what malema says. If malema was president i fear this country will be the next Zimbabwe.
 
Race will ALWAYS be an issue in this country.

Has always been and still is, so I don't see it changing soon.

The power has just shifted from one race to another.:D

ps. Malema is a twit, I don't know why anyone pays any attention to him.

If there is a white university graduate and a black university graduate. Why should the black guy get preference? The playing field is already level between the two.

Giving preference to the black guy in this case just because he is black, is racist.

I agree they toyi-toyi alot... and deserve higher increases... (if they do the same work... and earn less than their white counter-parts)... till its balanced

but I think they are low on self-esteem & direction... here the politicians fail them... more than their families and teachers

As an apparent member of the MyKKK group I'd love to answer those questions but, that's for another forum elsewhere. What I will say is this. Blacks now have the tools (some of them unfairly implemented and in fact racist.. Oh the irony), and have had them for the last 15 or so years to better themselves, and in fact voted in a party that was supposed to help them better themselves but have failed miserably.

Clearly you don't have any government contracts because ownership is everything in tenders. I am well aware of tender processes so please don't make a liar out of yourself.
