The International Rugby Board has taken a leaf out of the French book in an effort to counter the problem of uncontested scrums, which are sometimes used as a tactic by teams whose scrum, is in trouble.

If a Union allows the naming of 23 players in a match day squad for any domestic competition, there must be a minimum of three specialist front row players within the named eight replacements comprising two props and a hooker.

It is still possible that injuries may still strike a team so that they cannot replace an injured front-row player. They have had four props injured and neither of the replacement hookers can play prop.

In such a case the scrums will become uncontested but the team which deficient will play on with 14 men. They will not be allowed to send on a replacement for the injured player. This means that the team will not benefit from causing scrums to be uncontested. This is a change to the laws as they exist.

This is really good news!! I hope that SA Rugby Impliments this as soons as possible in the Currie Cup. Uncontested scrums is the worst thing that can happen to a rugby game! I had a game this week which had uncontested scrums for the last 20min of the game and it changed the game completely.

I agree, haven't seen any in a long time appart from the B&I Lions tour.

But, this makes the game very interresting when it comes to team selection. You now have to bench 3 Front row players. That makes the game pretty interresting :)
 
This is great news. Uncontested scrums bring nothing to the game. And also, the rolling maul is a huge headache, because there's still way too much trucking and trailing in mauls.
 
They should have 50 players available per side.
Then bring out offensive and defensive players according to the state of play, with lots of timeouts.
And let the players wear helmets and huge pads.

And allow forward passes...... and allow high tackles.......

YES!!! I can feel my brains oozing out of ears just thinking about it. :cool:
 
Why the need to always change the rules?

How about a bit of tradition? Let teams play with one set of rules for long enough to actually develop counter-tactics.

Have you watched a rugby match from the 80s recently? Things have moved on dramatically since that time. Rugby is now a professional sport. The rules were written to govern an amateur game.
