I'm sitting here thinking.

That guy is Gassing/Throwing or what ever he's doing to the chicks because they are not business viable :confused: I'm sure he'll give me the chicks for free if I collect daily not so then?

There is allot of potential money to be made from those chicks, feed them to slaughter size and sell them for a massive profit. A friend of mine, he's dad owns Alfa Kuikens. They make a killing from hatching and growing chicks then selling them off.

How come these guys don't give away these chicks which is not business viable to another farmer farming for slaughter instead of eggs?

I think I need to phone this guy....... there is money to be made here :p

Sell them as pets.

Give away a few to some celebs, and soon everyone will want one.

Chicken price currently is around R 14 per kg (Trading price) 70 000 chickens lets say 80% survives = 56 000 chicks. A nice full grown chicken is around 2 KG's.

Takes about 6 - 8 weeks

Now for just one weeks chickens 56 000 x 14 x 2 = R 1 568 000
Obviously excluding overheads. But that is a crap load of money .....
 
How much does feed cost?

You will have to feed them a lot to get them up to 2kg.

Also. You will need shelter, heating, and water dispense systems. (I think they spread lots of diseases if drinking together from a pit. You need a dripping water system.)

I think overhead costs for this kind of business are more than we think.
 
Also. Cleaning and maintenance on the enclosures.

I can imagine 70 000 chicks will crap a lot.

Start-up and overheads are 2 different things, feed is around R 2 - R 4 per chicken. So let's cut the R 4 out of the R 14 trade price per KG then let’s make it R 10 per KG.

Still R 1 120 000 per one weeks load of chicks.

This doesn't include start up fees, let’s say you have a loan on the start up costs. Make it R 3 million.

Repayment on a R 3 million loan over 5 years = Is around R 70 000 (Give or take)

So out of one load of chickens you will make = R 1 120 000
This excludes the feed which was calculated into the trade price. Of that you need to pay R 70 000 back on your loan

R 1 050 000 after the loan repayment.

Let’s say you have 100 employees @ R 4 000

R 400 000

Profit = R 650 000

Transport costs, operation costs and so forth let’s say that is around R 500 000

You still make R 150 000 profit for one load of chickens weekly.

Obviously it takes 8 weeks to grow a chick to slaughter weight. So the first 2 months you work at a loss. From there on in you make R 150 000 a week. Little more if you say the R 4 000 salary is monthly and not weekly.

Let's work it out on a monthly income.

R 1 120 000 per Week = R 4 480 000

Loan repayment - R 70 00

Salaries - R 400 000
Overheads - R 500 000

Leaves you with R 3 510 000 Monthly profit from a turnover of R 4 480 000

That is R 53 760 000 turnover per year

Profit is R 42 120 000

And yes it's just figures from the top of my head but that to me looks like a shyt load of money :eek:

Pick them up, release them into the road around your house (since you want free-range chickens) you won't have any problems since you'll have the intellectual rights to have thought of the roads as a chicken enclosure.

Freeway chickens. Killed humanely and in style. Tread marks sir? No sir those are from the errr grill? :D
 
I also don't like the idea of the disposal of male chicks because they have no egg-laying value or whatever.

But I understand that he is in the egg-laying business and that he probably sells a couple-thousand chicks to places like Rainbow chickens who are in the the chicken-meat business. I suppose the male one's he eventually disposes off are surplus.

You can only give away so many before everyone gets gatvol of your blerrie hoenders. Chicken poop is also very aggressive as a compost and will burn the roots of most plants if too much of it gets into the soil.

wrong. slaughter chickens get slaughtered after 6 weeks. But my mom never let's then go that long. She has her slaughtered at 4 1/2 to 5 weeks. by then they are about 2 - 3 kgs. Only in dec does she let them go for full six weeks, and then they are 5 -6 kgs.

She does not make a lot of money out of this.

Slaughter chickens eat a hellavulot. And drink a lot too. They also need to be given medicine, otherwise they get all kinds of illnesses and die. Even the slightest sudden movement or loud noise gives them a heart attack. So you must include a certain % in for loss due to heart attack/illness.

I can make over R 40 mill a year on his surplus chickens. He is throwing away R 40 million a year just like that... WTF is this world coming to :eek:

Also takes a salary away from 100 people give or take.

I think that covers the 20% mortality rate I included in the begining.

I still think R 500 000 will cover the weekly overheads of 56 000 chickens.
That is after I have removed the feed from the turnover. So that is R 500 000 for transport costs, medicine electricity and so forth that works out to about R 8.90 per chicken whic is way over stated. Will prob be close to about R 3-4 per chicken.

These figures I'm using against the profit is hugely inflated and I still turn R 40 million profit for a year :eek:

I have no idea what story you guys are talking about. But if these chickens are roosters that are cast out of the lot of egg-lying chicks, stay away.

My mom had a very bad run-in with someone that told her the chicks were slaughter chickens. She only realised after feeding them grower for 2weeks (grower is very expensive), that they aren't slaughter chickens. She changed them over to cheaper std chicken feed. But still, they took about 4 months to grow to a decent size to be able to sell them.

Also, they are very aggresive. They choose the weakest of the lot, and they all rape that one. My mom said that rooster would bleed, but they'd keep at it. Taking it out, doesn't help. As then they just get a new victim. I can't remember how many she lost this way. Eventually she started selling them live to farm workers in the area.

She suffered a huge loss on these chickens.
