RIM must be crapping themselves that Apple has taken so much market share in a such a short time. The fact that Apple is taking such a large portion of profit share should be even more worrying.

Well, in SA there is no stock of iPhone.
The article touched on it a little bit but doesn't the r59/r69 price for unlimited on-device data seem like the compelling reason to use a blackberry in SA? Compared to it the iPhone is crazy heavy when it comes to data. I wont even use the browser [even to visit MyBB] unless I'm connected to my wifi network.

People who bash iPhones usually have a BB, and vice versa. It comes down to personal opinion. I loved my BB 8320 - it did exactly what I expected from it. I then got a Storm, which was by far and away the worst mobile device I ever used. I now have an iPhone 3GS, and while its Exchange integration is not as good as BES, I love using it - it's solid, has a great interface, is stable and does everything I expect it to do. BB's are great, so are iPhones, it just all depends what you want from it.

However, the iPhone is capable of running background apps and therefore multitasking. It might not be listed on wikipedia as a required feature for a smartphone, but it does make your phone look a heck of a lot smarter if you can actually switch between running applications on demand.
What you are describing, playing music in the background while browsing the web, is not multitasking at all. A sub R1000 cheap Nokia can easily play music in the background while you browse the web and share the connection to the internet with the phone acting as a modem via either USB or Bluetooth.
Therefore I repeat myself, the iPhone is much more of a fashion phone than it is a smartphone.

Do applications running on Nokias really take that long to start up that you have to keep them running all the time draining battery life and hogging up resources? I keep forgetting that you've never actually used an iPhone so maybe this will help you understand. On the iPhone all I need to do is hit the home button and launch the next app - in other words I'm switching from one application . . . to another application . . on demand.

So instead of launching more and more applications, can you just hop between currently running applications without losing the context of where you are at in each of them ? Start time has nothing to do with it, getting things done in various applications is the key here.
I think what this article is illustrating, along with the point I am trying to bring across, is that maybe people never used (nor ever will use) an iPhone because they demand something a bit more serious and capable of doing more and not necessarily looking pretty while doing it.
EDIT : Please keep in mind, I am not trying to bash the iPhone, it is an incredible piece of kit and as far as a fashion phone goes it beats any other fashion phone I have seen. The reason why other companies like BlackBerry are edging ahead is because they have multiple models in their product portfolio and therefor they can cater for a bigger target audience than say Apple. One size does not always fit all. Perhaps one fashion - yes - but only while it is the flavor of the week.

And yes Backgrounder sorts out the multitasking issue and you dont even feel the differrence on a 3GS.
