Honeymoon destinations - International

Recommend some great honeymoon destinations that you or someone you know has enjoyed. Please don't suggest places unless you have first hand experience that it will be unforgettable.

So far I'm considering: Thailand (Phuket and Phi Phi Islands) or Zanzibar. I would like a luxury beach resort with a Spa, watersports and entertainment, plus some sightseeing around the resort.

I've already enjoyed Mauritius, so wouldn't go back there now.

Zanzibar is a bit cheaper and shorter to travel too, but you have to take something for the malaria risk. That unfortunately interferes with the pill, so it depends what you intend to make your main activity on honeymoon...

I've been to Thailand (Patong Beach) and Phi-Phi Island (Phi-phi Natural resort with seafacing room). Was absolutely worth every penny. And I am still wearing the "La Coste" shirts I bought at Patong Beach for R35 each more than 2 years ago :cool:
 
1. Do not go to Zanzibar (or any other place close to the Equator :)) during the period November to February. Too humid! Yes, I have firsthand experience - we went to Zanzibar in December (I think it was 2006) and you really cannot enjoy the holiday when its that hot and humid.

2. For romance, nothing beats a moonlight visit to the Taj Mahal. Mr Blu took me there, and it is amazing. The town where the Taj Mahal is located (Agra) is inland, so afterwards you can go to Goa for a coastal holiday.

3. In general though, I'd agree that an island holiday is nice for a honeymoon - try the smaller islands like the Seychelles or Reunion.
 
First honeymoon was to the Maldives - had a pretty good time apart from the company.

Went to Zanzibar the second time. Plenty to do, weather was fantastic (November) and I actually came home feeling like I'd been on a holiday.
 
I know the poster asked for suggestions for International destinations but I'd like to suggest the option of staying in or close to South Africa for your honeymoon.

Reasons:
1. If you go to some exotic place far from home you're more likely to be distracted and feel pressured into doing lots of sightseeing instead of just relaxing and enjoying the company of your partner.
2. If you keep the location closer to home it makes it a lot easier and cheaper to revisit the place for wedding anniversaries. That's a big bonus if you or your partner are sentimental.

Originally I was thinking of taking my wife to Greece on honeymoon but I'm glad I didn't.
Instead I took her to Natures Valley (near Plett) and we stayed in a very nice 4 star B&B. It was absolutely stunning! Empty beaches, rain forests to explore, MonkeyLand, Birds of Eden, Bloukrans bungee jumping (didn't try), etc.
Air fare was ~R1800 from Kulula for both of us so we can always pop down there for a weekend for our wedding anniversary without breaking the bank or getting jet lag.

I went to zanzibar in november for honeymoon and was really awesome.
I would recomend it stay at mapenzi beach club and take full package which includes all drinks and meals.
 
Thailand is amazing - Koh Samui is smaller than Phuket, which is really just a mini-Bangkok. If you want more of a quieter, island-feel, I recommend Koh-Samui

I see your point but from a girl: Splash on the honeymoon. You will never do it again. After this you will have children and always something as to why it will be to expensive. You can always go to Natures valley. Even take the kids.

Maldives, friends went for their honeymoon and it was excellent.
Zanzibar, nah, other friends went there for their honeymoon and it was 'ok.

I saw pics of both and would go with Maldives.
 
Medjumbe. http://www.medjumberesort.com. We went there and it was truly spectacular. I could not think of a better honeymoon. They also have different options at Rani resorts, and you can got to other islands in the Quirimbas Archipelago with spa's etc; we enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the island....

It really is very romantic. The one night we had supper outside on the deck, under the stars, right next to the water. I fed a crab some red snapper....

I worked with a guy, and he wanted to go to Mauritius on Honeymoon, but I made him change his mind and go to Medjumbe instead. Last time I saw him he thanked me and was very happy that I changed his mind :)

I will never go back to Maputo, simply because all the cops are full of crap; walking around with AK47s demanding money from you. To get to Medjumbe however you fly directly to Pemba from JHB and then fly from Pemba to the island (Awesome flight, you can see whales and stuff!). No dealing with cops :)
