Zuma holds frank meeting with opposition

President Jacob Zuma and opposition party leaders held a "constructive" and "frank" discussion on Wednesday amid a renewed spirit of co-operation.

"There were no issues of disagreement really," Zuma told journalists in a briefing at Tuynhuys, attended by 12 opposition political parties.

"We talked about what contribution opposition parties could make in making South Africa a better country."

Zuma gathered "a greater appreciation of the parties" during the meeting.

"The discussion today was, in my view, constructive and frank," Zuma said.

"We covered a number of issues relating to international and local developments.

"While we may not have always agreed with each other on every item, the discussion has enabled us to better understand each other's views."

Zuma hoped the meeting with his opponents would be the start of a culture that would continue "for a long time".

Eight opposition parties held co-operation talks on Wednesday, announcing that they had formed a committee to mull ways on working together in Parliament.

The United Democratic Movement, Democratic Alliance, Congress of the People, Inkatha Freedom Party, Independent Democrats, African Christian Democratic Party, and the United Christian Democratic Party agreed to meet on a regular basis to ensure "multi-party democracy is strengthened and the threat of one-party dominance averted". - Sapa

seems to me like he's actually doing a decent job since taking over...
don't get me wrong there's a hell of alot more to do like crime rate, unemployment etc but from all the hype and fear before the elections till now IMHO i think he's doing better than most people expected...
 
I'm increasing impressed with him.

Mind you, after that brain dead loser that we had before him, even a brain damaged hamster would make a better president.

Maybe Zuma will be able to undo most of the damage of Mbeki in the next ten years.
 
Zuma seems okay because he let's his croanies handle all the controversial things and gets his Malemas to make sure hatred towards whites is alive and well. Good puppet in other words.
 
He's making some of the right noises but let's be honest ... nothing seems to actually have been done. :/
 
He's doing exactly what he's been doing all along (even before the election): Telling everyone what they want to hear.

Let's see some action, Mr. Prez! Crime is still out of control. There was another Mall Robery yesterday where someone got shot and killed!

Yes, all talk and no action - a "Ja Broer".

Why doesn't he start by sending his partner in crime , Shabby Shake, back to prison where he belongs, and then face the court on the charges against him (surely an honourable man wants to prove his innocence).

He hasn't done anything overtly criminal since inauguration, which I think is confusing people :p

Now let's see him take some action against his money-grubbing, corrupt-to-the-core brethren and then the criminals and then the striking masses!

Quite frankly, I'd rather he gets rid of the raping/murdering criminals before he gets to the ones stealing from the cookie jar.

Yea i agree tackle the really serious problems first and someone taking a few extra cookies is not that bad, well not as bad as murder and rape.

For all the people who want to see 2010 fail _I_

That would be cool, but seems like a far greater job. Bringing a few corrupt politicians to task should tak far fewer resources and save the country a few million (or more) in taxes that could be applied to more critical needs

The problem is that when they are so busy munching their cookies they don't get around to managing the crime fighting.

Chicken-or-the-egg problem: Get rid of corruption so that you can get rid of crime, or get rid of crime so that you can get rid of corruption???

Oh, lets do what the anc does. Nothing. Crime is a perception. Corruption is a perception.
 
making the right noises (as someone put it) is still alot better than denying the problem even exists, at least with zuma we taking the first steps towards responsible decmocracy IMHO. he's done better in a 100days than mbeki did in 4 ! i think the steps his taking will help calm investors and the local public (however the public won't be moved so easily by little steps) my point is ,,,he's doing something which is alot better than doing nothing (mbeki denied there even was a problem with crime at one stage!)
 
Encouraging our president to lead us into the future we all deserve.

If one looks at recent police action, and members of parliament speaking out about crime, strikes and so forth, it is noticable that there is a change taking place within government.

This change indicates a realisation by government that the racecard can no longer be played and that what is needed to regain control over lawlessness and corruption is a government that clearly speaks out against crime and corruption and a government that shows that it will no longer tolerate many things it turned a blind eye to in the past because of the legacy of apartheid.

This change also indicates a government that is willing to take responsibility and start governing this country in a more positive way.

Our president might not be an einstein, but he is a man on the right path, seeking for solutions, engaging the opposition and slowly getting a grip on the power he wields as our leader.

There is light at the end of the tunnel thus, and soon the many despots within the party will have to toe the new line or they will be ousted.

I think we are in for some interesting politics in the next decade.

Five years ago, I was extremely negative about South Africas future, but I am becoming increasingly more positive.

That vicious crime remains a problem is true, but mark my words, expect vicious action from our police in this regard henceforth.

The time has come even for us, who are in the habit of dissing anything from government, to start encouraging those acts that are positive and to show solidarity in the face of the criminal onslaught.

No what Aeron is saying is that we should wait until after the event to see the poo hit the fan. Him, marine1 & others have been saying that the ANC is putting on a show for the world until after 2010 when the spotlight won't be on SA.

Remember that they have been "campaigning" for the taking away of the WC from SA for as long as I can remember. Realising that isn't going to happen they have now switched to their doomsday predictions to after 2010.
