The Democratic Alliance will oppose the reported appointment of Mo Shaik, one of President Jacob Zuma's closest advisors, as the National Intelligence Agency's (NIA) new director general.

Shaik's appointment would "fan political flames" in the NIA, party MP Theo Coetzee said in a statement on Sunday.

"The Democratic Alliance believes that Mo Shaik is exactly the wrong person to be appointed as the head of the NIA and we will oppose his nomination, if indeed his name is put forward."

According to weekend newspapers City Press and Rapport the contract of the current head, Manala Manzini, expires on Monday.

Quoting an unnamed source, City Press reported that Shaik was set to take over the post.

According to Coetzee: "The appointment of Mo Shaik, who is an important political ally and close personal friend of President Jacob Zuma, would no doubt fan political flames within the NIA.

"Mo Shaik is deeply involved in faction fights within the ruling party, and we must therefore assume that his appointment will further politicise the NIA."

Zuma had "set about deploying all those people most loyal to him, to key positions in the state".

"Significantly -- and increasingly -- these cadres are being deployed to positions which should be independent of the state and to positions which, at the very least, should be defined by that person's expertise in a given area, as opposed to their political credentials.

One of those Shaiks as head of the NIA? Am I dreaming? A devilish nightmare surely?

This must be an April Fool's joke that lost its calendar and crept in at springtime.

Ho ho (sick laughter). Just imagine -- we shall soon have suspected fraudsters, thieves, convicted criminals, and psycopaths in every public office, from the state president, through the cabinet, to D-Gs, heads of department, provincial 'premiers', municipal mayors, etc.

So what? Is it guilt by association now, or can somebody specifically explain what Mo Shaik has done wrong?
 
Over the last few months some really disturbing stuff has happened. Hlope getting off scott-free talk of the constitution changing to re-arrange the provinces and now this Mo Shaik issue.

By "illness farce" you mean the medical parole that was decided by the prisons' parole board, then ratified by the minister? And then cleared by SAMA and the HPCSA?

You're obviously in a much better position to know Mo's brother's medical state than the two doctors that have been treating him, or the two professional non-govt (AFAIK) organisations that probed their treatment of him?

In any case, we're talking Mo, not Schabir.

Nobody said he did anything wrong, the article is quite clear in what the problem is: He's a political appointment as an ally of Zuma, not at all his expertise in national intelligence I'm sure.

And I think the whole Shaik/Zuma relationship should be pretty obvious by now. He was supportive of his brother and Zuma's relationship even when the facts came out wasn't he?

He is a former national intelligence co-ordinator, and one of the organisers of Operation Vula.

Yet another reason for more people to leave the country. This is tragic if it happens. :eek:

Oh alright, interesting. But I'd still think the history with his brother (and his support of him I mean) and Zuma doesn't bode well. Zuma keeps placing his supporters into positions of power, a slippery slope.
