Here's a challenge for the AV enthusiasts.
So we currently have our PC in the study and the DVD player hooked up to our old Aiwa component hi-fi next to the TV. The PC has an 8800GT connected to one of the AV inputs via the gfx-card's TV-out (s-video to RCA converter) using a 10m AV cable. The DVD player uses another AV input of the hi-fi. These are then passed to our rather old TV via RCA cables.
[PC] ->S-video->RCA-> [Hi-fi] ->RCA-> [TV]
I'd love to be able to toss out the TV and replace it with an LCD monitor. We only need to watch DVD's and streamed content, no DSTV or such. The options we have are:
1) Find some way to convert the RCA (analogue) output from the hi-fi to digital (preferably DVI). This allows us to keep all the current connections
2) Buy a 15m DVI cable for R500 and play everything from the PC in the study, which can get painful for DVD playback
3) Buy a HDD media-player, which will cost >R1,000 and require and additional electrical plug. Similar argument against an HTPC.
Does anyone know whether there are options for converting the analogue back to digital, which don't cost as much as a media player? Also, retaining 1920x1080 HD resolution would be a bonus
