Okay, so I'm currently on CellC and I'm looking to port over to MTN for the primary reason that MTN has HSDPA and CellC doesn't. What's the point of having a phone capable of HSDPA7.2 and being constrained to 384k EDGE. So, is it worthwhile to change to MTN? I've heard lots of horror stories but then again I've heard horror stories about them all and with CellC I find I have to reset my phone at least 3 to 4 times a day after using the internet on it due to "tower upgrades" or so I'm told.

With MTN, you have to tally your own data usage and it can rapidly go over into OOB if you don't monitor it carefully.
VC warns you if you are reaching your cap. So I would say VC. Both seem to have 7.2 in most areas.

I've been a loyal MTN subscriber for just over 9 years, but my vote goes to VC.
I know that this is not HSDPA-related, but for 3 months now I have tried to change my personal details on their website. No luck. They have been addressing me as Min. Adrian..... from day one. I've also tried to do it telephonically a few times in the last 9 years.
My mom has a 1GB *free* mailbox on her prepaid VC account..... mine is not even a gig, and I'm not allowed to send emails unless I use my MTN phone!
Not to mention the confusion about qualifying for an upgrade. Even though my last upgrade was in April 2008, according to their website, my next upgrade will be in August 2010?! I was under the impression that I had a 24 month contract with them.
I'm thinking of porting....

Neither MTN nor VC are perfect, but VC seems to have sorted out their billing issues... My, admittedly small, company had three MTN accounts. Trying to port them was such a nightmare I just gave up and got VC accounts. For data - bite the bullet - buy the modem and go prepaid. What compelling reason do you have to port to MTN?

All the other phones on the corporate contract are MTN so I figured I might save some money on calls with us all being on the same network. I have ADSL at home and work so data card not really an issue. BUT, I use my phone a helluva lot for browsing the web when I'm sitting waiting on clients or in the car for the wife or trailing her around doing the shopping haha and rely extensively on my exchange server pushing the emails to my phone for comms with the office. Not that concerned about data useage as I doubt I've even done 100Mb on the phone in a month (all downloads are done via ADSL). My contract is with Nashua Mobile who seem to be provider independant so they handle all billing issues and first line support etc and I'm very happy with them so far (except for call diverting which after 4 years does STILL not work!)
Oh yes, and my house seems to have a lot of CellC and Vodacom dead zones where MTN is working fine on my wife's phone. Even so, I'm prepared to live with the dead zones if need be.

Well i would also recommend VC over MTN. But if you're coming from Cell-C , then yes, porting to MTN is definitely a step up anyway.

ported to mtn from vc and got dud reception at home - sitting on edge. literally. imo that's the most critical thing. never had any billing issues either and number port went smoothly (also with nashua mobile). i'd probably go back to vc after my remaining year is up though. lack of coverage is driving me nuts.
Thanks for the advice offered everyone. VC seems to be the way to go especially after watching a client of mine sitting on hold to 808 for almost two hours trying to get his number ported. So I checked the coverage map for Vodacom and while my office falls in the WiMax zone (is this applicable to cells?) my house falls bang in the middle of a gprs / gsm only zone. I'm surrounded by red except for my block

Better off with vodacom, thier unrestricted apn realy are unrestricted and i am yet to find full access on mtn, i use vc for gaming, mtn just dont play.
