calling vg3.... what is vodacoms response and feeling towards mtns pricing for edge? a hundred rand cheaper for the same amount of data? and when you reach your cap you are billed at nearly half the rate we are?

yes we know its slower, but will it be THAT slower? data is data and thats a better deal than we have......

where did you get the info from? will make interesting reading. And interesting to see Vodacom's response like you say
 
Yes.. THe high pricing is the only thing keeping me from replacing all my internet connectivity with vodacom3G

Once the official announcements are made, Vodacom will do a full comparative analysis.

According to info posted in the MTN thread, it seems that without a card included MTN is R100 less expensive, for the 1G contract, and with the card included (as is 3G-One), R50 more expensive.

But this is all speculation at the moment.
 
Only the Vodacom/MTN shareholders won't love a pricewar!

I guess it is more difficult with data to create confusing packages that can't really be comparable with the opposition.

Maybe we will see iBurst going bust because 3G is outpricing it...just a dream
 
Before this escalates into a mud slinging match...

A pricewar in the broadband market would be great from the consumer's point of view :D.

It is the consumer's prerogative to push for & instigate such a war, however I will ask for one thing only - let's keep the comments civil (so far acceptable ;)) - typically emotions can run high with such consumerism - let's keep the emotion out of it :).

... i still have no regrets having signed the 3g contract. this is my first positive internet experience
 
perhaps now (although this thread not the best place to do it, but anyway) will be a good time to **!!PUSH!!** for data rollover like on voice. ??????? Perhaps someone could advise if MTN will be doing such! (please let them, cause then Vodacom will :) )

I've said it before, and I say it again, Sam: The general feeling here is that people are happy with their ISP, in spite of high prices. Kudo's to V3G.

Absolutely :D and it is why I do it a lot - to indicate that I am fairly light-hearted & easy-going (I hope), but I also find it is better to pro-actively nip something in the bud before it escalates into something that would be detramental to this forum & v3g's continued participation.

The great thing about MyADSL as a whole, is that it's a fun place to hang out, I feel that way, I know other forumites do as well, and I think v3g is also entitled to enjoy being here as much as the rest of us, otherwise what's the point...?

To summarise, criticise prices etc as much as you want, but don't criticise each other - that's the line that defines the difference between fun & misery.

Now breath in, breath out, and :).

From what i gather it's not really the 'bundled'/'contract' costs that will make the ultimate difference [i.e R500 for 1GB vs. R600 for 1GB] ...it's actually the out-of-bundle rates [R2 p/mb vs R1.25 p/mb ] . Quick calculation shows major cost differences there. Imagine 200MB overshoot every month, that'll be R400 vs. R250. (and overshooting with 200MB on a 1GB account is not that hard i'm sure :P).

Quick speculaive calculation :

Vodacom : 150 MB bundle : R150
MTN : R100 MB bundle : R100 + 50MB out of bundle @ R1.50 = R175

So if you stay in bundle, Vodacom wins. Now chances are you won't stay in your bundle on merely 100MB [i know i won't]. Yet you do not want to go for a more expensive bundle and LOOSE money because you haven't used it up.
[HINT : carry over of unused MB is an absolute crucial missing factor here]

So lets say you overshoot and use total of 200MB per month. (That is 50MB overshoot on Vodacom bundle and 100MB overshoot on MTN bundle).

Vodacom : R150 + R100 = R250
MTN : R100 + R75 + R75 = R250

Now it looks equal, except for one catch. You only pay a 'flatrate' of R100 at MTN but R150 at Vodacom . So technically you have a smaller bundle, pay less for it and can -optionally- double overshoot the bundle and still match the vodacom bundle on the MTN system. Now do the same calculation on the 1GB account with R1.25 out of bundle rates....should notice some major saving options on the MTN system especially since the bundle is -already- R100 cheaper ON TOP of the cheaper out-of-bundle rates .....

So defintely something to consider :P

Also remember that Vodacom is working on pre-paid data vouchers (that is according to Vodacom3g), so if MTN won't offer that, Vodacom will capture a large part of the pre-paid market. I hate contracts...

On another note, I think informing the masses on how this works is quite a task. Most people I've talked to about GPRS/EDGE/3G just can not grasp the idea that (1) you don't need a Telkom line anymore and (2) you use your cell phone connected to your pc for internet access. They see it as something that only "nerds" will do.

Yea i think i've made some calculations regarding the prepaid vouchers, the only conclusion was that if they did bring out vouchers for less than R2 p/MB rate they will have to drop the out-of-bundle contract rates to the cheapest voucher rate otherwise there's no point in having a contract. (Why pay R2 p/mb when you go out of bundle if you can get prepaid and top-up with vouchers 'on the fly' and never pay R2 p/mb).
 
and then if they have vouchers which allow you to download 100MB, anytime, and say a window of 6 months, then they will have to have roll over on contracts too :) something tells me this is a sore point for me :)

So you can get a 'free' datacard / phone? Thats quite a good incentive.
 
I think they should just drop the whole 'out-of-bundle' jazz. If they can offer good rates to some users why not just offer the same rates to everyone for crying out loud. You'll still make a profit and get more users.

Harley79, trust me, if Vodacom ever go the 'roll-over' route, the forum will owe you one. Every time you request it, I pass it on.

Interestingly enough, there are more technical issues around rolling over data than commercial ones.
 
I know prepaid rollover was just introduced into the pre-paid topup market. (Got this with my invoice this month). Having never known there is no rollover in place, I think Vodacom seems to be making positive steps in that direction.
 
Have I got this right?

1) If you use 75Mb / month:

a) Vodacom: R110
b) MTN: R10 + (R2 * 65) = R140

2) If you use 150Mb / month:

a) Vodacom: R149
b) MTN: R100 + (R1.50 * 50) = R175

3) If you use 500Mb / month:

a) Vodacom: R350
2b) MTN: R100 + (R1.5 * 400) = R700

4) If you use 1Gb / month:

a) Vodacom: R599
b) MTN: R649

5) If you use 2Gb / month:

a) Vodacom: R1198
b) MTN: R649 + (R1.25 * 1024) = R1929
