If there was such a package, would you go for it?

How much would you be willing to pay?

Just interested for my own sake.

If there is one crit re Iburst packages, it must be the lack of choice. I even think that 1 Meg is a total overkill for the market that WBS is trying to catch. Hence I guess the market @ 1Meg capped will quickly saturate.

But....my wish is for WBS to be forward thinking, and thus creating opportunities for small business to thrive by having the following UPCAPPED packages as a matter of urgency:

128 kb/s @ +- R400 Use: induvidual "light" 24x7 users with own network.
256 kb/s @ +- R600 Use: induvidual "heavy" 24x7 users with own nwtk.
512 kb/s @ +- R800 Use: Small corporates - own nw.
1024 kb/s @ +- R1200 Use: Larger Corporates - own nw.

These prices are for launch, and should drop by min. 10% p.a.

Uncapped ADSL is here, so why can't WBS compete? Surely U have a roadmap?

Interesting question especially coming from Shaun.

6-9 gb is probably enough for my needs at the moment. So when westville BS goes up i will probably move over to the 9 gb package. So the question is how much is the freedom to not worry about a cap ever again worth? For me i would pay an extra R300 for that so again Around R1500.00.

I am sure that broadband in SA will migrate over to uncapped / unshaped eventually. I dont think it will be a big bang type of change over, probably steps by step. I see initially a megacap type situation say 30gb. ( i know thats peanuts for some but thats the reason for it. ) Then uncapped but shaped. Then uncapped unshaped but still expensive, and finally what we want.
Its a long road to freedom.

OMG shaun, yes yes yes yes yes!!!!!!!, this is what I've been asking for, if WBS offers uncapped unshaped they will kill the competition, the fact that its you asking is giving me goosebumps, Shaun I'm straight, but I love you dude.

how much would I pay?.. thats a toughie, obviously we have to compare it to uncapped adsl and then add a little since its 1mbit, I'm gonna put a number out R2500, but to be perfectly honest at this point I'd probably pay more (which is crazy right? but I NEEEEEEEEED uncapped again)

I am thinking of a work project I am busy on , if you do do it , then I would go for it.
Price wise , i would think in the same area as Slim

this project you keep talkign abotu sounds very interesting gary...
if it was cheaper that R2500 I would pay that too btw :)

Ok, well if you want a polling thread about Uncapped iBurst, then please debate here about the polling question, and the various options that forumites could vote for, I assume it would not need to be a multiple choice thing...? Just a question asking for a maximum all inclusive price you would be prepared to pay?

If you want such a polling thread then get cracking & define the thing. If you don't want it, that's also ok.

Regards

ic.

Shaun, I'm glad you asked.

Unfortunately, if you study how other ISP's do their things (and I'm talking abroad, not local) you'll notice that they do infact shape (but not throttle, throttle = you wish to kill something, I throttle my cousin for kicking me in the balls...etc) protocols by using stateful packet inspection (for p2p) and then offer an uncapped service.

So, for an uncapped 1 meg shaped service, I would pay in the region of 1500 rand. As I mentioned in another thread, I feel the price per gig is still a bit too high. (which I wouldn't mind if my unused mb would rollover)

Thanks for trying to keep your finger on your customer's pulse. Let's hope 5 months from now WBS would be a force to reckon with.

btb, I'm still going to threaten to cancel.... ALOT :D

The most I would consider paying is R1200, but then I'm not so bandwidth hungry. I've only done 150MB so far this month.

In the overall scheme of things, paying over R1200pm for any internet access is hefty.

Hopefully, fast, uncapped, and unshaped below R500pm will become a reality one day. What am I talking about? We had it before the launch!

this is way past polling my man
Methinks I didn't word that post properly, I think it is clear that there is a case for Uncapped iBurst, whether shaped or unshaped (unlikely), however it is probably of more interest to WBS as to how much forumites would be prepared to pay for Uncapped iBurst.

I am suggesting that if it will help, we could create a polling thread to give WBS an idea of the all inclusive prices that forumites would be prepared to pay ;). We could also have this running as an indefinite poll (i.e. no definite closing date) bcos WBS are probably not in any rush to provide this right now. In addition the poll could be open to see who voted for each of the prices (limited to 1 option per forumite, i.e. you would only vote for 1 of the prices).

Those are some of the ideas :).

a breakdown of my bandwidth usages per day per month per year, as well as a graph showing me what i've used, and draw an average usage line, so i can determine which package would work for me at the end of the day....

Shaun, before you consider uncapped @ 1MBit, iBurst needs to have a think about what SideWinder's proposed above.

To me the 128 and 256 options he has outlined above would put a big boot in Sentech's groin :)
Lets face it iBurst is way better from a service/customer centricity perspective than Sentech, but your 3GB cap including local bandwidth sucks, and right now, your average SA web surfer really just wants to pay an affordable flat rate for a reasonable 24/7 connection.

The big economies of scale, volume market for SA broadband is something like:
128k (capped to 5GB intl only, unlimited local) @ R300 pm.

If iBurst launched and publicised the above you would hit 50000 subscribers in under 6 months...

The important thing for iBurst is to remember this is a long term game.
You would sign up plenty on the 128k package above, but I guarantee over time those people would migrate up your offerings as they get used to a 24/7 Net connection - so they would become better revenue sources over time :)

Bear in mind that Telkom will be "releasing" 1 mbps ADSL soon ... so WBS get your strategy sorted.

This is what I don't understand. I haven't downloaded ANYTHING, not one single file this month, and I'm standing on 400MB! How the heck does that work? I've been surfing the Net and chatting on the odd occassion. That's about it!

I don't get this... :(

I need to get Smoothwall installed so I can keep track of the BW myself, because it seems that this BW meter of iBurst's is borked!

As for what I would pay for an uncapped, unshaped service - probably also around the R1.5k region - nothing more. I also agree with the rest of the guys here - give us lower speed packages at reasonable prices and pretty soon people will be going "Telkom? Sentech? Huh? What are they? I know only the way of the 'Burst!"

My nose bleeds for you my friend ... I have been online since 1 April, with one forced disconnect on the reset of the cap, and a manual reset to check their BW meter. Been running VPN's, downloading MPG's, etc etc, and according to them I have only used 50 Mb ... what a bargain

Re the lower speed/higher cap options proposed above, I'm sure a lot of ppl will prefer/consider a 256K/nocap over a 1M/3GB cap.
Something else that should also be considered is the following: If your location does not allow you to *ever* reach speeds of 1Mb, why should you be forced to pay the same as someone that resides within the 'dark green zone" ?

My opinion probably doesn't matter, but if there was a R600 per month option of uncapped/unshaped connectivity at ANY speed i would promptly clean my shorts, then signup. R600 is a steal, seeing as thats about what your 56k dial up costs you per month (if you use it during all call-more hours).

256kb/s would be sweet but 128kb/s would suffice if it is unshaped AND uncapped. Please may i have some?

Surfing (and only surfing, not even downloading free movie clips) porn, can EASILY rack up 400mb in around 3 hours.

So surfing and the occassional chat over the past 3-4 days wouldn't be far fetched
