I have been using Joomla for two months now, and think it's great. Only issue have had so far, was easily fixed by visiting the Joomla forums and Google.
I could be wrong, but why can't you add php code to a Joomla site?. All the files are there, if you want to delve into the code. Which is another thing I like about it, if the article is not displaying the way you like, you can just edit the raw html code to fix it.
The only other issue I had was with some PHP settings, but found a fix within minutes. I find that every time I use Joomla, I discover how powerful it can be, and I learn more about PHP and MySQL running XAMPP on localhost.
I have not worked with Drupal, WordPress, or any of the other CMSes out there, but I am sure that they also have their purpose. Also, I think it's a bit unfair to compare Joomla, or any other open-source CMS to a closed source, in-house, custom-designed one, Nelwa. Just MHO.
