SA National Taxi Council's deputy president was gunned down near his home in Evaton, south of Johannesburg, Vaal Rand police said on Saturday.

Mthuthuzeli Molefe, 57, was riding his motorbike on Friday when he was killed 20 metres away from his house by unknown gunmen around 7pm, said spokesperson Inspector Mzimkhulu Mthimkhulu. Molefe died at the scene.

Police found six cartridges of a 9mm gun scattered around the scene, with all his belongings still with him. "No arrests have been made. It is understood that the gunmen fled the scene with a silver-grey car," said Mthimkhulu.

It was not clear whether Molefe's killing was linked to the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system launched six days ago or to his involvement in the Evaton Urban Renewal Project in which he is chairperson.

"We cannot say whether or not the shooting is related to that but we will be investigation both possibilities," said Mthimkhulu.

Santaco and government were still in talks over the taxi industry's role in BRT projects after it raised concerns that its introduction would affect the livelihoods of taxi operators. Anyone who might have witnessed the shooting or has information that might lead to the apprehension of these men to contact Inspector Nyokong 0735527552, said Mthimkhulu. - Sapa

The taxi drivers probably killed him cos he was talking to the government instead of shooting at buses.

. . . Justice in Africa . . . The African way . . . :D And he was not even armed . . . What was he thinking . . .

I see on the news the guys even suspect the govt and politics could be behind it. hehehe sounds like the OLD SA.:D

The more things they change, the more they are the same. :D Another knife in ANC's back :D Unfortunately they don't even see it as such. I wonder if they are not short of something . . .

And this is why I hope the BRT puts the taxi operators out of business. Get the taxi drivers jobs in the new system and slowly do away with taxis and this mafia-style approach to solving problems.
