Its bad that this is in truth how bad their service and planning is.
 
I really doubt if telkom cares. They didn't even do much about Neotel owning the Seacoms cable.

Apparently Telkom does care. I've read previously that last week when Telkom heard about this they contacted the company and asked for their circuit number so that they could ensure "optimum performance" or some junk.

Telkom stand to be made fools of if this works (and I'm pretty sure it will work as the pigeon took around 45minutes on a dry run last week to get the data to it's destination). The technically-minded all know Telkom are fools, but the average non-technical person doesn't.

The great thing about this is that it speaks to the person who knows next to nothing about how terrible internet connectivity in this country is. You can quote transfer speeds to the average person until you are blue in the face, but it will never effectively communicate to them how far behind we are. This is much more fun and much more effective.

That and Neotel do not own the SEACOM cable.
 
Apparently, it took 2 days to transfer 4GB with Telkom in a trial.. the pigeon will make the trip in 45 mins..

Well, if Neotel is willing to get some free marketing from this, they should solve this companies problem by offering them affordable quality internet that would beat the pigeon...

They're totally inept. Despite the fact that Howick is a small place by the time Telkom figures out which circuit these guys are on little Winston the pigeon will be home safe and sound.

There probably have been more arguments over the maximum speeds of birds than any other creatures. Estimated speeds for some species rate higher than 200 miles per hour, but most authorities believe some of these records, which were established several years ago, are a bit exaggerated. Many disagreements are based on the fact that the speed of a bird in flight often is measured as ground speed. This ground speed is determined by measuring the time required to fly from one fixed point on the ground to another. Since no consideration is given to the wind conditions in such a measurement, the results can be misleading. A bird flying at an airspeed of 25 MPH with a 35-MPH tail wind will appear to be flying at a ground speed of 60 MPH. If no wind were present, the bird would cover the same distance at only 25 MPH, and flying against a head wind would further reduce the speed. Measurements made with airplanes and radar devices have established flight speeds at lower, but possibly more accurate levels.


One of the slowest recorded speeds for a bird in flight is the 5 MPH credited to the woodcock. Fastest speeds are recorded for the swifts, falcons, and homing pigeons, depending upon which statistics are accepted. Two species of swifts, timed over a measured course of two miles in India, covered the distance in thirty-six to forty-two seconds. This places their speeds at 171 to 200 MPH. Since no data are recorded concerning the wind speed or direction at the time of the flight, their true airspeed could have been less. It is reported that on another occasion a flock of swifts overtook and circled a small plane traveling at 68 MPH. It is estimated that these birds were flying at 100 MPH.

Other authorities consider the homing pigeon to be the fastest bird because it can maintain a high rate of speed for long distances. It has been accurately measured at a speed of 94.3 MPH. One homing pigeon averaged 73 MPH over a distance of 182 miles, and several have flown over 90 MPH for distances of at least 80 miles.

The peregrine falcon, which preys on other birds, flies at speeds of 65 to 70 MPH, but it has been clocked at diving speeds of 170 to 180 MPH. Most ducks and geese can fly at a speed ranging from 60 to 70 MPH; however, their usual flying speed is much slower. At its 40-MPH cruising speed, the mallard out flies the teal, which cruises along at 32 MPH. But if pressed, both birds can accelerate to around 60 MPH.


Probably the most amazing speed, because of the bird’s small size, is that recorded for the hummingbird. With wingbeats approaching 200 per second, the ruby-throated hummingbird can dart from flower to flower at speeds up to 60 MPH.

The bookies agree with Capaldi's assessment, although they do offer a glimmer of hope for the pigeon fanciers.

So there you have it. While the formbook suggests you'd be barking not to plump for the dog, a slight change in conditions and it could be all flight on the night.

Only trouble is, if Jim does exact sweet revenge, his owners may have to keep a careful eye on him afterwards - particularly if Athea hasn't had his tea.

Remember telkom plays dirty...So it is better have 5-10 different types of pigeon, with hidden locations, and no other human interference before the races.

All are then set off on different paths at the same time or even different days, to get the average result, due to atmospheric conditions/weather/wind speed and direction.

Research has been performed with the intention of discovering how pigeons, after being transported, can find their way back from distant places they have never visited before. This had been researched for quite some time. Most researchers believe that homing ability is based on a "map and compass" model, with the compass feature allowing birds to orient and the map feature allowing birds to determine their location relative to a goal site (home loft).[5] While the compass mechanism appears to rely on the sun, the map mechanism has been highly debated.[6] Some researchers believe that the map mechanism relies on the ability of birds to detect the Earth's magnetic field. Much of this work has been conducted by Rosthina and Wolfgang Witschko and has shown that alteration of magnetic fields around the home loft result in disrupted homing ability. Recently, researchers have attempted to determine how pigeons can detect magnetic fields, and two different mechanisms have been proposed. A light-mediated mechanism that involves the eyes and is lateralized has been examined somewhat, but recent developments have implicated the trigeminal nerve in magnetoception.[7][8] Research by Floriano Papi (Italy, early 1970s) and more recent work, largely by Hans Wallraff, suggests that instead pigeons orient themselves using the spatial distribution of atmospheric odors[6] (see the August 20, 2005 issue of Science News.). Near their home lofts, in areas they have previously visited, pigeons probably are guided by visual landmarks.

Various experiments suggest that different breeds of homing pigeons rely on different cues to different extents. Charles Walcott at Cornell was able to demonstrate that one strain of pigeons was confused by a magnetic anomaly in the Earth that had no effect on another strain of birds. Other experiments have shown that altering the perceived time of day with artificial lighting or using air conditioning to eliminate odors in the pigeons' home roost affected the pigeons' ability to return home.

Some research also indicates that homing pigeons navigate by following roads and other man-made features, making 90 degree turns and following habitual routes, much the same way that humans navigate.[9]

Messenger pigeons, more commonly known as carrier pigeons, were used as early as 1150(BC) in Baghdad[10] and also later by Genghis Khan. The Republic of Genoa equipped their system of watch towers in the Mediterranean Sea with pigeon posts.

Rafting photographers already use pigeons as a sneakernet to transport digital photos on flash media from the camera to the tour operator.[2] Over a 30 mile distance a single pigeon may be able to carry tens of gigabytes of data in around an hour, which on an average bandwidth basis compares very favorably to current ADSL standards, even when accounting for lost drives.[3]

These kinds of simple bulk transport do not use the Internet Protocol.

Telkom will probably increase the speed of the line 4 weeks after the race is finished, and then blame it on cable theft why they lost, this is Telkom we are dealing with here.
