Howzit everyone.
Was wondering what speeds everyone else is getting on blackberry since the fix.
Mine has been averaging 180 to 200 Kbits/s a second.
For the last day or so its terribly slow again with the speed test timing out and no websites opening.
This is on a Bold.

The Vodacom network cannot handle the huge uptake of customers signing up for the New Blackberry 8520 deal @ R149pm total monthly cost which includes the blackberry service and 120 off peak minutes.

Ah yes the elusive Blackberry network "FIX". Worked so damn fast for about 24-48 hours after they "fixed" it .... now it's almost back to the way it was before the "fix" .... like with everything at Vodacom these "fixes" last a few days before someone goes and tampers with them. I would just love to see one of these fixes last for more than a week, that would be quite novel.

My speeds right now with MTN:
Connection Type: Carrier
Avg. Download Speed: 320.38Kbits/s
Max. Download Speed: 414.09Kbits/s
Avg. Upload Speed: 20.97Kbits/s
Max. Upload Speed: 80.9Kbits/s
Disappointingly slow the last week or so. Usually it averages quite bit higher. This time at night I should get 800-1000kb/s. BIS is not capped at 350kb/s on MTN.

It's a shame really.
I love my Bold but the gets really slow sometimes.
I've been getting a friend to do speed tests at similar times to me on MTN and if the results stay the same (MTN is always faster) I'm going to buy out the rest of my contract and switch.
Its just sad that Vodacom get to make money for giving me crap service.

So what is the consensus? Is a switch to mtn necessary for normal bb usage?

Browsing on my BB Storm is a joke. I am lucky to get 30 Kbits/s. Web pages take ages to display. My Nokia 6110 Navigator is about 10-20 times faster. Very disappointing - my conclusion is that Vodacom is unable to provide a decent Blackberry Service beyond e-mail.

Email seems to work fine.
Browsing was brilliant just after the fix but is dropping of again with more users joining.

In a nutshell, the performance I get on my brand new Blackberry 8520 can at best be described as worse than dial up.
Back in the day my 28.8 US Robotics Sportster Analogue modem performance was better than this.
This service is oversold and will only result in more unhappy clients like I am.
Even html formatted emails take a while to download the embedded images, quite sad actually.
We actually have to pay for this service?
If I provided this service I would not even want to give it away because of the embarrasment factor
VC your BIS service sucks

While it's not as bad as it was it's getting there.
Vodacom had to go and make BIS essentially free with their latest special apparently without considering how all the new users would [negatively] impact the service.

If you are going to offer buffet at an eat as much as you like for a once off payment then you are going to have to ensure that you provision enough food to cater for however many people you are selling tickets to.
I guess the hope was that you would be turned off by the queues lined up and quietly go and sit in a corner and watch everyone else eat without complaint.
Poor analogy, but one does kind of feel ripped off.
To be honest I have not even tried to download anything except for Opera Mini which took its own time to download, but just browsing pages is becoming quite frustrating, with the signal more on GPRS than EDGE and even when showing EDGE it is just as slow as GPRS.
Which application are you using to produce your speed test results?
Edit:
Download speed is: 20.7Kbits/s
Max speed is: 34.21Kbits/s
Upload speed is: 6.33Kbits/s
Max speed is : 23.6Kbits/s
It may say 20.7Kbits/s but it does not indicate the lag where it sits for a bit with no progress being indicated

yeah it's pretty bad again. Some sites timing out and speed test won't even connect right now. It's funny how VC bragged about their BB Link upgrade when it seems all they did was bring the service up to barely usable level.
I wonder how long it'll take this time to get recognition of the problem?

My speedtest is also timing out again today.
My question is if I signed up for the blackberry contract (not the normal contract with blackberry added onto it). Do I have grounds to cancel the whole thing and not just get refunded the blackberry part of it?
The whole reason for me getting the contract was the internet and email.
It’s also impossible to ask this question to anybody in any Vodacom call centre they all want me to take my phone into a Vodashop to get it checked out.

I dont think so - when you're using the blackberry apn all data roundtrips via RIMs European servers.
But that doesn't mean its acceptable for the speed to be a small fraction of the Vodacom apn speeds.
So I called 155 and spoke to the Vodacom Blackberry department, what a waste of time! Firstly they are unwilling to even acknowledge there is a problem, saying it is the first they have heard of it. I guess I should of known better. So i was instructed to head down to the vodacare in Centurion for them to check my phone before they can complain to RIM.
So off i went, spoke to the stores 'Blackberry Specialist', ha ha, what a joke. He also has a Storm, said he has the same problem and there is nothing I can do, I just need to wait for the scheduled system upgrade which he has no idea when it has been scheduled for. As for sending a complaint to RIM, apparently I need to do that directly, WTF!
According to this guy, in his region they are pushing out 300 new Blackberries a day. About 180 a month through the Centurion store. What they are doing is closing ports for browsing and using them to push emails, this is why our browsing speeds are sh*t but our emails are still coming through relatively smoothly.

I also tried the 155 helpdesk.
They said they arent aware of any issues. I eventually managed to have them log a call with the advanced data call centre.
Got a call back just before 5 yesterday where the guy said they are aware of the issue but they dont have a ETA for the fix yet.
At least I managed to get a reference number out of them for once.
Im hoping this reference along with the acknowledgement (I'm just gonna use the refund for 3 months) that the service was down a very short while ago is a strong enough argument that Vodacom can't deliver on their half of the contract.
I've been paying for the contract every month but they havent been delivering.
Refunding the blackberry part of it only is useless.
If I had known I couldn't get data I would have gotten another phone with a decent data bundle.
The whole argument that Vodacom use saying its because it has to get to europe 1st is crap anyway. MTN also work the same way and they don't have any issues.
It's just pathetic planning from Vodacom.

Ok, just did that, still no BIS, have shutdown, pulled the battery, reinserted and booted back up again, signal indicator in following order:
SOS <-- enter Pin code
GSM
gprs requesting
edge
gprs
No GPRS, no EDGE
So no BIS service.
Thanks for the suggestion/help ;)
PS I am in the CPT Waterfront, anyone else have same problem?

Have call 082155 and discovered my BIS has been de-activated since 00h30 last night, but I received mails till 6h09 this morning, am currently online with 082155 and they are trying to sort as I am typing this.

OK, my phone is new, just received it two weeks ago on a handset upgrade/migration, with Weekender Plus option, BIS included.
Called 082155 on receipt of the handset to activate BIS which was duly done and it was great initially, but of experienced the degradation of the service thereafter.
As the new month is imminent, I like this word, the BIS activated earlier has been deactivated as of 00h30 last night and will be re-activated tomorrow for the new billing cycle or so I was just told, which explains my dead BIS service today.
May affect other new Blackberry adoptors so may as well carve all of this in stone here for their benefit should they find the same issue.
Will have to be patient until my new BIS service is re-surrected again ;)
Thanks for you efforts ocleroux :D

Ahhhh I see now what happened. Did not realize you had BIS active before. Checked the system notes on the system and basically what happened is when you did the upgrade, the deal that you took has BIS included, but this uses a different service code as apposed to the normal BIS service u already had active before the upgrade. The system therefore had to de-activate the normal BIS service and set the activation for the new BIS serivice that is included in the deal that you took with your upgrade. Now it makes sense :-)

@ ocleroux - My BIS seems to be re-activated, showing GPRS in caps this morning however I have not received any mail on my BB but have on my PC for the same account.
I can send emails though and I can access the Internet now again.
Have contacted 082155 went through the options for Blackberry assistance, but was then told, "Due to unforseen circumstances, our call center is unavailable" :(
Now what to make of _this_ response from VC support?
Anyone else getting the same message as quoted above?
Have gone to my settings and registered on the Wireless network and received the response from Blackberry, which says, "Your handheld has been registered with the wireless network" , but still no new emails.
So something is still broken on my setup and something is definitely broken with the call centre.

Depending on how your PC email client is set up, when the PC downloads the email it is normally no longer available on the mail server for your blackberry to pull it. Somtimes you can change the settings in your email client to leave emails on the server once it has downloaded the email, so then it will go through to your blackberry aswell. What email u using? Best way to document the speed issues is to post your speed tests here.
Performance seems to be hit and miss as can be seen by other BB users on the 8520 Tips & Tricks thread (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=191379&page=2).

There is no Blackberry Speed test thread under the MTN forum.
It appears that there is no need for such a thread to exist as nearly every comment on MTN BIS seems to be positive especially since MTN doubled capacity to RIM on Wednesday, according to comments there.
So what is the excuse for the really poor performance we have been receiving from the VC BIS?
I must admit that emails comes through quite quickly but on device browsing can be likened to watching paint dry.
I have posted numerous speed tests which indicate fluctuations in performance, mostly poor and many others concurr with their speed tests posted.
How long is this going to take to resolve?
More importantly, what are the options available to us who have subscribed to this service in good faith, only to get this, now becoming notoriously poor service from VC?
Surely this cannot continue, even if the BIS service is reasonably priced for what is purports to provide.
Payment is exacted for the service with _good_ money, we are not crumpling the notes, or throwing in monopoly money or subsituting gutter bolt washers for coins.
So what have we as consumers done to deserve such poor service from VC BIS?
Do we really deserve this?
Oh, this is not isolated incident by any means, disenchantment of new Blackberry 8520 users on VC BIS is unprecendented
The _only_ people who are positive about the BB 8520 are MTN subscribers
This seems to rule out the BB 8520 as a bad device even if it is only GPRS/EDGE capable.
This is actually coming across now as being a rip-off, promising unlimited Internet etc (have you seen the adverts?) but not delivering on the promises :erm:
Quite annoying :(

Thanks for posting your speed test results from MTN in the VC Speed tests forum, (3G, EDGE or GPRS?) as it really affords us VC victims an opportunity to compare apples with apples and exposes the poor service we are receiving for our good Cash.
Unfortunately, it is not as easy as just moving to MTN, I have a contract in place with VC for 24 months which will attract cancellation fees etc should I wish to terminate it early.
My question would be a simple one, surely the contract is a two way street?
If VC is delivering such a poor service are they not guilty of breach of contract?
I do understand that no network provider will/can ever provide 100% uptime/throughput but one can safely say that the _poor_ VC BIS service is the norm rather than the exception, borne out by many forum speed test posts.
I also understand that VodacomData does do a stirling job in addressing individual forumites queries.
However, I am find this poor service wherever I travel within the City of Cape Town, ie. Northern Suburbs to Atlantic seaboard daily and Southern Suburbs over week-ends as well.
My colleagues using MTN BIS initially had some issues but not anything like what I am experiencing now.
Granted, emails are pumped through quite quickly, but online browsing is really pathetic.
Please indicate whether your speed tests are via 3G, EDGE, or GPRS as this will certainly clarify speed performance differences experienced.
I have at times, few and far between experienced quite snappy performances and have posted those results here as well, but sadly these are now becoming consistently worse.

Speed test are via 3G, on a Blackberry Bold. Even on EDGE you should be expecting a decent service (ie download > 200 kbps)
The bottleneck is with the international links to RIM. You will experience a poor download speeds, irrespective of where you are in the country.

I understand that _everything_ comes via RIM, compression is applied etc.
However, it seems that MTN are not currently affected by these anomolies, just using your speed tests and other MTN BIS commentary as examples.
Sub 200kbps seems reasonable for EDGE/GPRS but we are experiencing between 7kbps -13kbps downloads, really sub 20kbps
While that may be fine for text based emails that is the "watching paint dry" syndrome when attempting to browse

I complained to Vodacom via their website and I got a call back after 3 or 4 days after some backwards and forwards with email. They said they are aware of the problem and they are trying to fix it. He then started saying that RIM have something to do with the connection so I reminded him that MTN dont have the problem. He was a bit lost for words but yeah.
At least they aren't denying it.

I got my Blackberry 8520 this weekend from Vodacom.
ABSOLUTELY SHOCKED at how S.L.O.W. it is compared to what I experienced on MTN.
Staff at Vodacom 155 call center known only 2 solutions to "fix the slow BIS problem".
1) Please dial *111# to re-register for BIS
2) Hard boot the phone by taking out the battery while the phone is on.
No use phoning them for help. I would recommend that if you are with Vodacom you DON'T get a Blackberry. I hate Vodacom I hate Vodacom I hate Vodacom BIS (Blackberry Internet Service) - I want to use the words Vodacom and SLOW and Blackberry Curve 8520 and Vodacom Contract and pathetic service from Vodacom and Vodacom is the slowest network on earth when it comes to browsing on BIS with Blackberry as often as I can on the internet because I want Google to scan these messages and whenever a new customer search for reviews on a Blackberry cellphone in South Africa, I hope these threads come up first, together with all the lovely complaints on HelloPeter before they actually get to the reviews.
People must know how pathetic it is to own a Blackberry with BIS and be tied into a contract with Vodacom with a call center that has no clue and a company that won't acknowledge that they're offering a non-working service and then have the cheek to launch a massive marketing campaign where they offer the phone for cheap to everyone, while they can't even service their existing customers.
I'm also posting as many positive messages on the net as I can for MTN and Blackberry with BIS. Because Blackberry phones are amazing on MTN with BIS - it's like a dream to use them on MTN!!!!!!! I love MTN I love MTN!
I'm going to pay for Google AdWords for 1 week so that my link will come up on top of Google searches in SA for Blackberry BIS on Vodacom and I'm going to tell the world, everyone that clicks on the link, about the poor service we getting and I'll recommend and link to wonderful specials for Blackberries on MTNdirect.co.za. I have a couple of Google Adword vouchers that I got in the newspaper so I'll get at least 1000 clicks out of them - so on a R149 contract Vodacom will hopefully loose out on R149000 per month and hopefully that money will all go to MTN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Screw you Vodacom!

More importantly, we are not alone, as is evident in the activity on the forum of others like us bemoaning the choice of using the crippled BIS from VC.

I've just typed a nice complaint on Hello Peter. Let's all complain and post speed tests on Hello Peter as well as on MyBroadband.
I see the PR people on Hello Peter is trying to be very politically correct. But, they always reply to each complain about slow BIS on Hello Peter with the following irritating line:
"In order for us to assist you, you need to provide us with your email address as we need more information for escalation".
When you write your complaint, please type in the complaint that it's not neccesary for them to get more info from you as you're merely stating that they're BIS service is VERY slow. I linked to this forum in my post so hopefully EVERYONE will see this. I also pointed out that there's a thread on MyBroadband where MTNers are raving about their lightning fast speeds.
Tell them you don't want to "enter into an email conversation to get more info to escalate" type scenario - we just want them to fix it - there's nothing to talk about, and much to do about.

On a separate note, anyone else narked by the fact that AppWorld isn't supported here. When I signed up for mine I was told yes, 1000's of apps and it syncs beautifully with a mac....what a crock of ****.....

I heard back from Vodacom today -apparently having problems with number ported recently from MTN.
So in reading the forums today:
Telkom line to France issue
Vodacom to RIM connection issues
Porting issues
....seems to be a few to many different excuses / problems.
The guy from Vodashop yesterday told me that its totally normal for your browser to say "requesting" for ages before loading. And he says of course its slow during the day - the network is busy.
I paid top dollar for a smart business phone to do business like normal folk do - during the day.
I dont care what they say - networks are making a killing and they need to stop lying about what they offer - if they told me "look , here's a kick ass phone - we cant offer decent speeds at the moment but we'll try and get there" i'd probably still get it and not feel so ripped off. or maybe not
Also, anyone else get "requesting" on your browsers for ages before loading??????

The VC rep couldn't give me a date for this to be resolved but at least she acknowledged that a lot of their Blackberry users are complaining and that they know it's not working... I'm happier ;-)
wow - you got a call - all i got was a lousy excuse on hellopeter.

Testing at 3 in the morning is hardly a test, do this same test during business hours and post your results here. However that speed you got at 3am in the morning is how Blackberry "should" be performing for each and every user 24 hours a day but that's just not the case.

Vodacom phoned me today and was very excited to tell me that the Blackberry service is now 100% sorted out. The guy was completely unaware of the fact that there's apparently a whole upgrade happening with regards to the link to RIM, he said "No, everyone's profiles just had to be reset." - but I still don't see any improvement. VodacomData, can you actually confirm that there is indeed an upgrade taking place? No one else knows about this???
Also, I see that they updated my hellopeter complaint and said "Problems Resolved"... You guys all still also experiencing slow browsing during the day?
Maybe I must complain again and this time make it a little more clear...

Well, what do we do now... complain again on Hello Peter? At least I got a response: http://hellopeter.com/vodacom-complaint-[330925] but it didn't really help at all. And I know that emailing customerservice@vodacom.co.za as they suggested is not going to help at all.
Any suggestions? As long as I know for sure that they're upgrading their capacity as stated on Tuesday and that it'll be better in 10 days time I'm happy to wait...but somehow only Vodacom Data knew about this...

I am not exactly sure, but these might be two seperate cases. Yesterday mail & BB instant messages seemed to have been delayed. This now seems to be have been corrected now. The upgrade mentioned by VD will sort out the speed for browsing as this does not affect the delivery of mail and BB messages. E&OE :p

Bis still sucks on vc. The only thing that was resolved was vc's continued commitment to shafting the customer.

The performance on my phone certainly does not indicate improvement, nor do my Speed test results:

Is it just me or anyone else finding similar results?
Just to test, I did one more Speed test for the sake of my sanity since they say BIS is fixed:

Vodacom is still denying that there is a problem after the reply i got from them on Hellopeter.
This is what happend on hellopeter:
My problem as described below was not solved as the Vodacom rep says in his reply. Just another runaround from Vodacom!
I fell for the Vodacom Blackberry 8520 scam. They are advertising that you can get unlimited on device internet. The problem is that you rarely get a connection you can actualy use. Most of the time when you try to access the internet it times out or takes ages to load. I found out that vodacom is over subscribed on the BIS but wont acknowledge that there is a problem. I have friends on the MTN Blackberry Intenet Service and they have no complaints about internet on their devices.
I called Vodacom a few times they told me to take my battery out for 30 seconds and try to access the internet again. I would like to get a straight answer from Vodacom as to what the problem is and what is being planned to rectify this problem. The time for denial is over. The problem is obvious!
Hello xlungu,
Kindly be advised that we have liaised with our Advanced Data Support Desk who advised that there were problems being experienced with the Blackberry International Gateway which has since been resolved.

While I do understand that posting Speed tests also has an impact on VC's network, it is the only way to carve into stone exactly the type of throughput we are experiencing and have to live with.
This thread exists for exactly that reason, to document the issue.
These are time stamped and the application leaves its mark as proof.
Until I see significant improvement in usability borne out of better Speed test results, I will have to say take the _resolved_ story with a pinch of salt :erm:
So we have five more days to go to 24 October 2009 as per VCD announcement (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showpost.php?p=3237064&postcount=384), when we can expect bandwidth upgrades to RIM, no salt involved there at all.

I've taken out a contract with MTN now, I figured that the amount of time wasted on Vodacom calls and destroying my phone's back cover after having to "hard boot" it for the 100th time as per the lovely consultants on 155, it's just not worth it.
So, Vodacom will be getting a lovely R200 per month from me for the next 24 months, sad sad sad, but unfortunately hiring a lawyer to get me out of this contract will just cost waaay too much money. And not paying it will only destroy my credit record. So Vodacom wins again - Congratulations!!!! So I've made peace with it, Vodacom will in total get R4800 from me over the next 2 years, while not providing me with any BIS service or anything. I cut the SIM card up and went to the MTN store today to get a new Blackberry on a new contract.
Needless to say, it's working like a dream on MTN and I'm loving the Blackberry experience for the first time. It's a costly lesson for me, next time I'm going to investigate much more before I sign a contract. What's sad is that in South Africa you need to research first before you decide who to sign a contract with because no one gives a damn, they're all too helpful to get you into the one-sided contract, but from there you're on your own and complaining to ICASA is a total joke. So they get away with it.
At least I managed to sell the Vodacom Blackberry to someone for R2000 so I got some of the wasted Vodacom money back at least.(I told them Vodacom Blackberry Internet is AMAZING!).

Just a bit of info for your information. I've had contracts with mtn since february this year. I have yet to receive a statement from them. I see the payments going off my bank statements but I don't know what its for.
So the grass is not always greener on the other side. I'm also unable to check my balances via ussd as its always down and when its working it takes at least a week to update.
Calling 808 doesn't help either. I've logged numerous call all without success. Goodluck with mtn.

so it sounds that you are stuck either way with getting a BlackBerry for the "amazing free internet service". Go with MTN and you dont get any support, go with Vodacom and their service is over subscribed (cant belive they still deny this absolute fact, just do one search for BlackBerry on this site to see why). So I guess right now a BlackBerry is a no go, oh man how I miss O2 now :(
luckily I checked the forums before signing my 24 month contract with Vodacom. I was about to get the Bold this week, so were two mates of mine (they were goin for the Storm). but after reading all of the reports on the crappy BIS vodacom offers, will give it a pass right now. Cant believe Vodacom can be so stupid though, they could have gained most of the BlackBerry market, but with speeds like that noboddy will renew their contract. ah well, good ol SA> ;)

I purposely haven't renewed my contract so I'm more than prepared to change to MTN if Vodacom doesn't live up to their assurances and sort this out by the end of the month - and by sort it out I mean something sustainable.

The new Blackberry Bold 9700 with Trackpad is on the horizon as is the new Blackberry Storm 2, both to be offered by MTN, hopefully before Xmas.
I will know by 24 October whether I can endorse the VC BIS or not, which will be indicated by my sig which incidently is in use on every forum that I am a member of, with the appropriate link to the Speed tests thread which probably accounts for the high incidence of new hits daily.
Just an act of kindness to allow prospective Blackberry subscribers to make a more informed choice before committing to 24 months of poor service.

I am looking around for it and will let you know if it is put up for download again.
I would like to know what exactly it tests when the Blackberry user base on Vodacom connects to it (what servers does it access in what countries and what part of the link does it test since there are many facets that make a browser connection work)
I have made enquiries and am waiting on answers.

It is with mounting excitement that I watch the seconds pass by as we are literally a few hours away from 24 October 2009 when automagically all our Network performance related issues will become a thing of the past.
It is a little confusing to find the posts related to speed tests and slow network speed posts, as it has been buried two layers deep in a sub-forum.
While one can understand the reasoning for the _burials_ the timing is unfortunate as the upgrade as promised by VodacomData is imminent.
Really looking forward to tomorrow when Network performance related (Speed) issues will be something we can refer to as the past.
I have refrained from mentioning a product or device name for fear of this thread also becoming part of the burial service rendered to VC.
However, time will tell while I don my Positivity suit.

I have not seen nor heard an announcement from VodacomData that the upgrade has been implemented, can you post a reference to that effect, or can we assume that you have inside information that it has been effected.
The URL above seems to be incorrect, should be apps not alps, as well as the fact that the output of speeds has been bolded makes me feel a bit of editing was involved.
Lets see if anyone else is getting the fantastic speeds you so happily report.
It would be helpful if we also state EDGE, GPRS or 3G, handset type, location, such as JHB, CPT, DBN.
By the looks of things thus far it looks promising :D

LOL, yes it does seem to be much better, in my case only so over the last hour.
Thinking of the new Bold 2 or Storm 2 and if this becomes consistent will pass my Curve 8520 to my daughter and it will be a toss up of either of the above.
See fismail also reporting fairly consistent performance, so look good for now.
Going to wait for some more individual results to be posted though ;)

Is anyone else getting speeds like these? I have to say that I've been very hesitant about posting my speedtest results lately as I'm not sure how accurate it is. I'm using version .186 because I deleted the later version when I kept getting connection problems and now I can't find it anywhere.
The results reflected below has never been achieved on my storm before even just after the previous upgrade the highest average download I got was around 800kbits/s and that was around 5am on a saturday morning.
I've closed the app after every test performed below before doing another one to clear the max speed. And during this time the average time to load a page was around 15-20 seconds despite the speed reported by the app. Downloading has been completed in excess of 50kb/s for 2mb files.
In the past I've been able to download 30mb zip files. Now I can't even download 5mb. Request entity too large so vodacom has decreased the file size limits. I hope that this will be restored. Especially for pdf files.
I've been looking for another speedtest app to compare results. I found Cisco's GIST. I'll test and post those results tomorrow. I'll also post the link for the app later.
