Somali pirates profit western firms

Many of the pirates operating off the coast of Somalia were given special forces-style training from Western firms, a special report by Al Jazeera has found.

Some security firms currently protecting shipping from the pirates had been engaged to train them a decade ago.

One company, Hart Group, coached trainees to be the "coastguard" of Somalia's semi-autonomous Puntland region - providing protection from illegal fishing in the region.

In this exclusive report, Al Jazeera's Dan Nolan found that Western companies, involved at all levels of the business, can now expect to make up to half a million dollars from the avergage $2m "ransom and release" contracts they are awarded to solve.

Some Western firms, and many many more Eastern/African ones.

I imagine the big money, the insurance companies, wouldnt agree with that logic.
 
Makes sense hey, train some pirates to attack some shyte, then offer to help sort the problem out :D

Oh it does. Sell the African rebels weapons and then kill the rebels when they use them! :D

I'm on local atm, will check link later - but from what little is written, it seems to be a case of "lets do what is good now and screw the future", akin to what happened with the Taliban. You train people for one reason - when that reason disappears (the trained people invariably lose their jobs etc) they will do what they were trained to do... kill (and execute military plans...). Maybe there is a little too much finger pointing to the "West", but these type of mistakes just keep cropping up... don't they?
