Hi guys, been reading a lot of useful info on these forums. This is my first post so my apologies if there's a thread regarding this info already?

Anyway, I've decided to take out a 3g contract with Telkom 2 days ago. Have to say I'm extremely impressed with the speeds! There's no infrastructure in my area for adsl, so it was basically this or iburst.

Now my question is: Would an external antenna help with latency (pings) to sgs, or would I be wasting my time/money with an external.

My signal is very intermittent, and I do get a ping of 70+ but with lag and spikes.

Telkom doesn't sell external antennas for the Huawei E960 gateway, they referred me to incredible connection which in turn referred me to Vodashop in Vodaworld, and they charge R1400 for an external, and they can't tell me if it would help with latency or not.

Does anyone here know if it's worth the money or not?

Just throwing my 2c in. It should help with the spikes, as I know the antennas improve consistency. However you would need to confirm this :D

I have the E960 with an external antenna I got from these guys :
http://www.poyntingdirect.co.za/

This is the one I got, the connector connects directly to the router :

Made a HUGE difference to my latency.

Thanks, I've got an iBurst omni antenna. You think that would work if I got the correct adapter?

Definitely not.
iBurst runs on a different frequency.

Awesome. Thanks for the assistance bud. Which adapter cable do I choose?

You dont need an adapter.
The router has an SMA female and the antenna comes with a SMA male connector.

Great info thanks. I am on Telkom 3G and looking at getting the E960 with the external window mount antenna from poynting. Do you think the window mount antenna is as good as the LPDA-A0021?

My only issue with the LPDA-A0021 is that i can only install it about 3M above the ground in the garden as there are two flats above me, does it need to be higher than that and is line of sight to the tower important?

Also, i see there is a B970 router too, other than HSUPA support are there any other differences compared to the E960?

Any advice is appreciated.
