I have struggled to see what hosting this event will bring me as an average SA citizen.

I still don't get it.

The road works, BRT, stadia, and Gautrain just don't do it. In fact, everyone will tell you that they aren't being done for the world cup. It's stuff we need anyway.

Here's what the government should have done. They ought to have banned all imports of WC paraphenalia. You want to buy a WC T-shirt, then you are buying one made at a little textile mill in the Western Cape. A fluffy toy? A factory in Bloemfontein will provide that.

Basically, a few people are going to make some rands because they bring the stuff in from China. i not saying that we ought not to have competition - I am saying that the WC could have provided a nice little kickstart.

Oh well. Another opportunity squandered.
 
So you think hosting the biggest sporting event on the planet should help you as an average citizen? It will help the country as a whole. I am sure DJK will give us a nice long post on how it will help the country as his knowledge of these types of things is very good.

South Africa is talked about world wide at the moment. That surely must be good for investment? Put us on the map world wide? When you say South Africa people actually know about South Africa :D.

As an average citizen it does not nothing for you.

I don't even know how it helps the country as a whole either? A bunch of people are going to arrive and a fat chunk of their money is going straight out again - some to pay for the T-shirts from China, and some t pay the 'commission' for licensing rights and accommodation.

What investment? Analysts already know where to get returns - they don't wait for world events.

There is supposed to be this long term view that people will come out for the event, like it and then return for their next holiday. Has China had a huge influx of tourists?
 
Each tourist will spend money in SA. Thats foreign money entering the country. Tourists are not only gonna buy WC merchandise, they gonna need to buy food and drink, pay for tours, hotels, care hire etc etc.

Its a lot of incoming cash. Word of mouth then also results in other tourists coming.

Phone any analyst right now, they all counting on the world cup to give the economy a boost - resulting in returns.
 
We get to go watch was footie in fancy stadiums. Is that not enough?

The World Cup has given the government impetus to fast track many of the infrastructural development projects that would have dragged forever if it wasn't for the World Cup. An example, some of the roads works including Gautrain have been in drawing board since late 90's. Infrastructural development benefits the whole country.

I prefer the 'Behave responsibly and do your duty and then get rewarded' as opposed too 'here's your reward now please behave'.

The very fact you have to entice the government with WC to do their job says a lot.

SA's infrastructure will improve massively thanks to the World Cup. The Guatrain is being fast tracked, Rea Vaya is up and running, other cities are busy with BRT systems. New stadiums and improvements, not to mention the new SAFA house, and team buses and cars used for the World Cup all stay in SA post 2010.

Then there is all the cash that tourists spend in SA.

The government isn't in a position to make demands. FIFA granted us the rights to host the WC with certain conditions attached (as they do wherever it is hosted). If the government demanded that everything must be locally made FIFA would've taken the WC elsewhere. There are plenty of countries who would love to be hosting so basically you take the opportunity or leave it. FIFA is the one that gets to make the demands!

As an average South African, do you think infrastructural development projects will have no positive impact on you given that they likely to benefit SA beyond 2010?

The WC was more a way to coax financiers to loan the money, IMO, as it provides some avenue for a return to be realised quicker in the investments into all those infrastructure projects.

@ Albereth, unless you have not read the finance news lately, all that spend IS providing more than nice kick start, in fact, its propping up our economy while our regular big money GDP contributers took a beating on the world markets.

Personaly, I cant wait for everything to be done, with the exception of BRT, I plan to make full use of all other initiatives.

How much money has been wasted on Zuma's legal defence? His prosecution? Minister cars? Corrupt police chief pensions? Tenders given to ANC tjommies?

The WC is more of a FKC. FKcup. Do you really believe all the monies that the tourists are bringing in are going to the masses? The poor? The sick? Those still living in squatter camps? Like so many other tax payer millions?

You cant see how tourists spending loads of foreign exchange in South Africa will benefit you as an "average" South African ? You do know there is more to a World Cup than the T-shirts ?

Did you ask this for the Rugby World Cup,Cricket World Cup,IPL and other big events?

This world cup "concerns' (***spit***) are getting old now.
