Yemeni girl, 12, dies in painful childbirth

A 12-year-old Yemeni girl, who was forced into marriage, died during a painful childbirth that also killed her baby, a children's rights group said Monday.

Fawziya Ammodi struggled for three days in labor, before dying of severe bleeding at a hospital on Friday, said the Seyaj Organization for the Protection of Children.

"Although the cause of her death was lack of medical care, the real case was the lack of education in Yemen and the fact that child marriages keep happening," said Seyaj President Ahmed al-Qureshi.

Born into an impoverished family in Hodeidah, Fawziya was forced to drop out of school and married off to a 24-year-old man last year, al-Qureshi said.

Child brides are commonplace in Yemen, especially in the Red Sea Coast where tribal customs hold sway. Hodeidah is the fourth largest city in Yemen and an important port.

More than half of all young Yemeni girls are married off before the age of 18 -- many times to older men, some with more than one wife, a study by Sanaa University found.

She was pulled out of school and married to a man who beat and raped her within weeks of the ceremony.

To escape, Nujood hailed a taxi -- the first time in her life -- to get across town to the central courthouse where she sat on a bench and demanded to see a judge.

After a well-publicized trial, she was granted a divorce.

The Yemeni parliament tried in February to pass a law, setting the minimum marriage age at 17. But the measure has not reached the president because many parliamentarians argued it violates sharia, or Islamic law, which does not stipulate a minimum age.

Backward uncivilised bunch

Combine religion & politics, and "miracles" like this happen.

Did someone say indoctrination?

Age 10

2007: A girl from San Lorenzo Cacaotepec, Oaxaca, Mexico gave birth to a baby boy on July 2, 2007. Her pregnancy was the result of a rape committed by the 65-year-old landlord of the house which her parents rented. The man was jailed.[24][25][26][27]
2008: In St. Anthony, Idaho, U.S., a girl gave birth to a 6 pounds (2.7 kg) baby at Madison Memorial Hospital. 37-year-old Guadalupe Gutierrez-Juarez was jailed on one felony count of rape.[28]

Age 11

2007: A girl from Lockland, Ohio, gave birth to a child on November 4, 2007. Her mother's boyfriend, Michael Chaffer, was sentenced to 28 years in prison on charges of felonious assault and two counts of rape. The baby is under the care of relatives.[35]

Sheesh! Backward uncivilzed bunch indeed.

You're right, they are most certainly a dastardly bunch, but when making your comparison take particular note that the perpetrators were imprisoned and the community condemns those uncivilised acts, but the same cant be said in the case of this little child bride.

Frankie, terrible things happen everywhere and history has taught us that no imprisonment or torture is incentive enough to prevent people from doing perverse things. Perhaps it happens less in America, but each country in the world has more than its fair share of problems.

In general, more developed countries have a thin veneer wrapped around them that makes it harder to spot the atrocity. Developing countries, especially those containing tribal or very religious (any religion) groups, do not bother with the veneer.

You would gain the reputation of an objective, moral person if you decide to observe ALL the atrocities taking place around you, committed by all the different sects and countries, and reported on all of them, or at least a representation of them. Now, you come across as an islamophobic on a witch hunt in the Middle East, which undermines your credibility greatly. JMO

Come on, you guys are being unreasonable, it's your fault, that your God or lack there of, that stops you from having young brides. You know what to do to change that.

Happens in Africa all the time, even parts that have never taken to Abraham religion.

Legalised peadophilia is what Islam provides. No need to wait for your 72 virgins when you can have them here and now.

And don't forget the Catholic priests who do hands-free feel tests on whether lil Johnny has something up his behind...

Again, you fail to see the difference between something that is widely condemned by society (quoted), and something which is standard practice and considered a societal norm in a community (OP).

PeterCH, I would think that you could have at hand, the most believable stats on Catholic priests who actually have been shown to be perverts, can you supply a number and if possible the total number of priests in the world today. To anyone else, care to guess the number of child brides there are, and also include the family members who allow and accept this as a tenet of their religion/belief system.

It's strange how people have such vastly differing opinions. Here (in the "West"), you can be charged with statutory rape if you have sex with a girl that is under 16 years of age, even if you are only 18 yourself. There, you can marry and impregnate a 12 year old and it seems as if it's the norm.

Islamic law can suck my ass if it condones minors being married off. That is evil.
