Windows 7 Upgrade Can Take Nearly a Day

A Microsoft Software Engineer has posted the results of tests the company performed to the upgrade time of Windows 7. The metric used was total upgrade time across different user profiles (with different data set sizes and number of programs installed) and different hardware profiles. A clean 32-bit install on what Microsoft calls 'high-end hardware' should take only 30 minutes. In the worst case scenario, the process will take a bit 1220 minutes. That second extreme is not a typo: Microsoft really did time an upgrade that took 20 hours and 20 minutes.

Microsoft wanted to make sure that an upgrade from Vista SP1 to Windows 7 was within a five percent threshold faster than an upgrade from Vista SP1 to Vista SP1.

Geez, hectic!

I installed 7 in what... not even 20 minutes (clean install)

I won't do a upgrade, would prefer a clean install on any PC.
 
Yup...

I did an upgrade from Vista SP1 to Windows 7... it started the process at 9:20AM and finished at 15:12PM. Never again. Take data, backup stuff, format clean install and restore data. Viola. 45 minutes max.

We learn from our mistakes.

On the plus side though... the Windows 7 upgrade is still flying without a hitch... and this was for the RC some months ago. So the wait may be worth it for some.

I agree. Upgrades can tend to be "dirty" and will end up slower than a clean install some time down the line. I always do a clean install..... and it also creates a frame for you wherein you can do an install and not have to download anything extra, etc etc.....

Yup... clean install agreed... then image and archive. Anything goes south then restore from image and running again in no-time.

The Windows 7 upgrade has not slowed down though. Still as quick as day 1 all these months on. Unusual for Windows... hmmmmm.
 
:eek: It's faster for me to do a FTP linux install which pulls 99% of the stuff off the net.
 
A clean install leaves all the gremlins behind. :eek:

Provided you have save all the stuff you want to keep, and external drives are great for that now, a clean slate is preferable for me.

Sorry peter did you try windows 7? O yes you never have :D

Who upgrade's pc's anyhow? Fresh install is pretty much the only thing you do but yea peter when you try windows 7 give us a shout mate :D.

Cape Town does not have a Chinatown but perhaps you're referring to the Roman Polanski film, in which case they occasionally do play the Director's Cut version at the Labia theatre.

Sorry Pete, I cant agree I have found win 7 fasterthan xp in every regard on 3 pcs from a 1.3ghz celeron with 384 meg ram to a e8200 c2d ...
 
Yea but greg peter would not know if windows 7 is faster on his pc's because he has never tried it :D. He sprouts a lot of BS 99.9% of the time :D

I tried it before NOT on my PCs. I don't waste my time like you.

Windows 7 is better than Vista but worse than XP. You want it to feel faster but it's not.
 
Agreed.... Win7 took 20 mins for a fresh install (have done it on 2 seperate machines, 20 mins each time).

Win7 is so much better than Vista. Faster, slicker, simply better.
And I used to enjoy using Vista.

How the heck do YOU know I haven't used it? I've used it and it is slower.
Grow up. Some people here are such kids. Shouldn't you be in class right now?

Do you actually do anything productive on your PC? If yes, you'd have stuck with XP.

Use windows 7 and then let's talk again dude. What build did you use peter? waits for peter to google, what is a build :D, you have also never used vista you admitted that but you say windows 7 is better than vista?
